Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
>Why not something like Cinnamon, which has a "natural" GNOME Shell layout and a fallback mode at the same time? Because Cinnamon, just like GNOME 3, is focused on modern machines with proprietary blobs thus one can assume that the "fallback" options could be discontinued in the near future. The classic option of GNOME Shell was originally intended to be dropped real soon and kind of "survived" due to its popularity. A GNU/Linux distribution that uses absolutely no proprietary software and can utilize modern hardware only to some little extend should use a desktop environment that will most likely work under these circumstances in the foreseeable future. >Or Xfce XFCE is another good option I think. I'm not quite sure about access for handicapped people, though. Also, releases tend to be slow so reaction to security holes could lead to some concerns (and security concerns seems to make people consider switching to free software). Another little disadvantage is, that GNOME usually comes with feature-rich applications that offer everything new users expect from applications while XFCE tends to sacrifice a bit of functionality for performance (which, again, is a plus for XFCE). But generally, yes, if a bit of work goes into that I think XFCE is also a good candidate for a 100% free software distro that also focuses on usability, new users.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
So, GNOME Shell seems pretty much like a good option to me. GNOME Classic I think is the way forward. They chose it for TAILS because it is easy to use for normal people.

It actually runs surprisingly well without it. I don't know about Cinnamon or KDE or Unity, though. Every other one I can think of does not require any hardware acceleration. > supports access for handicapped people An advantage not shared by all DEs, but it is shared by GNOME Shell and MATE. > since it's GNOME (popular) many dependencies for other programs are already included I don't know whether or not this is technically true by some sort of accident, but I doubt it's true in any special way for GNOME, at least. In any case, it's kind of irrelevant since the b > No switchables users by default Not true. You can create new accounts. Ubiquity just doesn't help you with this when you install the system.

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Why not something like Cinnamon, which has a "natural" GNOME Shell layout and a fallback mode at the same time? Or Xfce.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
You need not compile from source. The Unity Tweak Tool allows you to turn off the online features of Dash, the search function. See https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-install-unity-desktop-environment-and-create-session-entry-trisquel-70
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Unity? I like this interface. But it has privacy issues. I need to get source code and remove this. Then I can use this. And second bug: the Unity have button with Ubuntu logo, I right?
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I really like GNOME Fallback however I understand the complains. But one can do something about it. Let me explain: GNOME Fallback (as in Trisquel 7) Pros: + Similar layout to Windows, easy to switch / get used to + doesn't depend on hardware-accelerated graphics (think about libreboot users) + supports access for handicapped people + stable, around for a long time + since it's GNOME (popular) many dependencies for other programs are already included GNOME Fallback (as in Trisquel 7) Cons: - No searchable menus / app search - No switchables users by default - (there are probably more) So I sugged sticking with GNOME Fallback but also including software like Cardapio (better integrated, without the internet-search stuff included for privacy, probably needs some work) for the menu and replacing the default menu, adding at least 2 seats in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf by default, so ctrl+alt+f8 works and 2 users / accounts can be logged in at the same time. Some minor changes (like making Windows-button open the menu by default) would also make an easier experience. I think with just a bit of work, GNOME Fallback could be the perfect balance between all requirements. As it is now, it's a little bit too dusty.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
This is to an extent true, but computers designed for Windows Vista (some of them have in excess of 1-2GoB of RAM) generally can handle GNOME Shell if they are Intel computers. It's true that computers designed for XP and earlier are generally better for something more lightweight though. This should be Xfce in my opinion. It is much more accomplished and has many more features than GNOME Panel. It is also has more active development, and the releases add tangible new features. LXDE is lightweight, but I do not know of any older computer that cannot handle Xfce (mostly because I use window managers with such computers, I have not tried Xfce on really old computers circa 1999).

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I have actually decided that GNOME Shell with GNOME-classic should be the default. I have tried GNOME-panel a lot, and it is quite underwhelming. The application menus don't show all the applications; things like the Tweak Tool and Synaptic don't show up, and the settings are weird. It doesn't offer much advantage over Xfce. GNOME Shell is really easy to use. It looks great on most computers and it is designed with new computer users in mind. I know it got a backlash from the people who liked GNOME 2, and to be fair it was kind of crap when it was first released, but it has really improved. It is so easy a child can use it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I understand this, but my point is that, save LXDE, most if the desktop environments are on par in terms of power drain during normal use (although KDE is a bit more bloated).
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Mate is good enough.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Still only 1 point out of 3. Mate would be bad publicity compared to gnome-shell. It looks familiar only to those who are used to it. But The forum/website is not too good looking/functional either. For PR, this matters. And a modern-looking DE would be one hell of an improvement. For me personally, it doesn't: I set my Trisquel myself, and I can quickly modify a standard Trisquel to a gnome-shell or whatever for someone else. I could (and will) even script that. Also, there's gnome-classic mode in gnome-shell, so you can even keep your old workflow. No reason to bother with Mate.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
It has a GTK3 port in progress.

Trinity Desktop for Trisquel 8.

This is a very huge porn actress.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
It's nice to see someone giving actual explanations for his/her choice. I just think gnome-shell (with a few easy tweaks) is very classic in use, and very appealing. Fallback is ugly as f*ck. Same with Mate IMO. Appeal matters for new users. But I agree that the "out of the box" gnome-shell is not familiar enough. There's also gnome-classic for a near-Mate looks. But the ability to run better on slower hardware (I've read it's a very minor issue), and that seemingly unique behavior with external drives looks nice. According to this, I'd vote for a slightly tweaked gnome-shell as default. New users around me are more than pleased. A few tweaks that come to mind : Faenza icon theme (or something even more classic), activate minimizing/maximizing icons on Abrowser, add the applications menu, get rid of the rounded corners (I ended up doing it in CSS), add a dock extension, and that's pretty much it, if I'm not mistaken. I'll have to test the external drive behavior.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
That may be, but XFCE is lighter. OTOH, this is some weird behavior. I don't remember using XFCE for long, so I can't confirm, but with other WM/DE, I've never had the brightness level change by itself.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
strangely enough, though mate's power manager has more potential for increasing battery life, due to the fact that it can permanently set the brightness of the device to whatever you wish. i put it at 90 and the change is phenomenal. its like a 30% increase in battery life. it used to be hard to get 2 hours and 30 minutes to appear when i would turn on my computer for power manager, but now it says 3 hours of 30 minutes. lol It is simply amazing how mate's power manager increases battery life more than the xfce one. ;)
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Mate is ugly, has a poor gtk3 support, and it's ugly. Also, setting up universal access seems complicated. Not good enough for a flag DE.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
well at the very least, the mate power manager is far superior to the xfce one. you can set the brightness one time to one level and it stays at that level no matter how many times you shut down and turn back on.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I used Mint for a short while and really enjoyed Cinnamon.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
On battery life, LXDE is certainly the lightest desktop environment on its own, and its default applications are very light. But after LXDE, the difference between other desktop environments is actually not great. In some cases, XFCE is actually less lightweight than GNOME Shell! The power management is actually pretty similar. The features that drain power the most are applications. If you use your laptop for libreoffice, you will not get significantly worse battery life on GNOME vs a reputedly lighter desktop environment such as MATE or XFCE. Other than just the shell or a window manager such as Fluxbox, the best battery life is LXDE+no wallpaper+lightweight apps. So my point is for an average user who likes the wallpaper, WiFi access, heavy applications such as Libreoffice, MATE is not much better than GNOME. KDE on the other hand, is bloated (QT?) and therefore is a battery guzzler.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I agree with you on mate because after installing it, I completely agree it is better, but i think LXDE should be the other desktop or even better than that, have lxde xfce gnome and mate isos as options and if not that I would say put all the good ones (mate xfce kde gnome lxde) onto the net install and dvd install and just have mate and gnome as the normal options. :) I must admit i am greatly impressed with mate right now. IT seems to be good. only question i have left is how much battery life does it drain...
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Well, if you refer to the next release, I would like to see KDE and XFCE. But actually I got the default GNOME DE and installed KDE 4. I like plasma becouse is very friendly and easy to use.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I'm all for Gnome 3 Shell and Gnome Fallback, just like Debian.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
When choosing the default desktop environment, it is important to think of the main purposes of Trisquel GNU/Linux, and not about personal preferences alone. It should encourage unexperienced computer users to try free software (experienced linux users won't have a problem with changing their DE anyway). It should be able to use up-to-date free software applications. It should be convenient. It must support universal access for handicapped persons, especially at install time(!). It should meet security and privacy requirements. XFCE and MATE are unsuitable because the first is still gtk2, and the second supports gtk3 only experimentally so far. It would be difficult to get universal access tools working, and they would require to replace a lot of applications. KDE can do everything for experienced users, but uses to confuse unexperienced users. And then there is the funny fact that Micro$oft forgot to take out a patent for their most influential invention: a desktop with a taskbar at the bottom and a start-button in the lower left corner. Everybody who learned personal computing after 1994 knows this concept. It became a standard by custom. GNOME Shell and Unity both irritate users because the working environment "disappears" after pressing certain keys. Again: this is no problem for experienced users, and not for people who never used a DE before, but this is not the general case to expect. The GNOME Fallback solution is really fine. It meets the expectations of the average computer user. It allows to use gtk3-applications. Replacing mutter with metacity allows to run it on slower hardware, and metacity is well tested and very stable. It removed these damn Gnome Online Accounts, but included the tweak tool and alacarte as standard. It works with screenreader and universal access tools. What I like most is the behaviour with external data storage: adding the disk mounter to the taskbar allows to see an attached device, to mount it, and to open it in separate steps - no automounting, and no unwanted "disappearance" of unmounted devices. Safe and convenient. To choose LXDE for the lightweight solution is excellent, too. Almost everything can be adjusted according to http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Configuration but the default configuration works fine for unexperienced users. All in all, the standard configurations of Trisquel GNU/Linux 7 and Trisquel Mini were really good choices and should be kept in the next release. I respect all other opinions, but their authors obviously know how to get what they prefer. A standard desktop environment must be able to attract new users. We need more users of free software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Mate and GNOME are the only desktop environments that fit the accessibility support required by trisquel. So they are the only possible choices for the default trisquel version.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
gtk2 and gtk3 wouldn't be a problem, we can leave those DEs at GTK2 and leave only the gtk3 apps to use gtk3. Hell, that's how everything apart from GNOME and Cinnamon (and Budgie, MGSE, you get the idea) has worked since...2009! And that's exactly how they've worked with Qt apps sincetime immemorial (I was still in my diapers back then, I guess).
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Mate, is the best one, if Trisquel backports Mate's repos in order to get recent features. If not, XFCE4.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
GNOME Shell is really elegant when you get used to it. It's also very simple. I also wouldn't characterize it as designed for touch screens. Some aspects of it are more friendly to touch screens, but in general, it's designed for a mouse and keyboard. Keyboard support, especially, is something that GNOME Shell gives a great deal of attention to. You can quite literally do everything just in the keyboard very easily if you want to.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
XFCE, it's gtk and unlikely to branch off into something unrecognizable, like gnome-shell did.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I tried the newest version in Debian Unstable again. Although LXQT clearly does not consume significantly more RAM than LXDE, QT definitely makes it more bloated, so that some things do - from time to time - hang or render too slowly or incorrectly. It's still version 0.10 so obviously it has plenty of potential, especially around Wayland, so that we can have this new technology without having to use GNOME or KDE (which are not lightweight).

MATE PERIOD
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
It's still an acquired taste though. HAving acquired said taste, I think it's great. But to (rather forcibly) bother people who are not crious about it with a new workflow they never asked for? I think GNOME Classic came too late :(

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
If you are considering offering LXDE, just go with LXQT instead. There is a lot more going on with QT vs GTK+. http://blog.lxde.org/?p=1117
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
If you read the article I linked, the difference is only 10s of MB. It works great on Arch Linux, so I guess it depends on package versions, etc.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
It's not quite as stable yet, though. I used it on Debian Unstable for a while, and often the panel does not always go away when you click somewhere else on the screen. It also used to hang for a few seconds at times. LXQT is very functional but unfortunately it is not quite as stable as LXDE, and LXQT consumes more resources than LXDE (it is lightweight but QT is more resource-hungry than normal GTK+). It is the future though, and I think LXQT will be more or less finished in a year or two, or even earlier.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I enabled minimize and maximize in gnome-tweak-tool. So you can still sort of navigate like you did in old gnome or gnome fallback.

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Gnome Fallback! Do most of you guys use touch screens these days? gnome shell is too much like a tablet or smart phone layout. But I might change my mine. I just installed gnome-shell have to get use to it first to know for sure.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
(1) I voted for Gnome Shell. This is for the "regular" or "main" edition. (2) And there should always be Trisquel mini with LXDE for computers with low resources.

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Maybe, but remember that this thread isn't about how to set up a given DE but what should be the default one in Trisquel 8. Whatever is chosen as the default desktop for Trisquel 8 will need to be added (by someone) into the repositories if it's not there already (like Pantheon.) Trisquel's default desktop should not involve people having to go enable third party PPAs, etc.

I totally agree with Calm Storm Although i think every desktop environment should be available on the dvd and net install
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I mainly use xfce, but from time to time I install GNOME (with GNOME-Shell) and the more I use it the more I like. So I'd like to see GNOME-Shell as default in Trisquel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I like GNOME Fallback for Trisquel 7, but for version 8 I wish to see GNOME Shell, at least as an option in the installer. GNOME Shell looks fantastic and works great if you're sitting with a laptop, which I believe more people are doing nowadays.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Openbox (+ tint2).
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Don't you mean Trisquel 7? Unless we're talking about the next release? :-P Anyways, I voted for XFCE. When I setup my system with Trisquel, I basically use it like Debian and went with a minimal net install. Then after that was done, I installed XFCE, my programs I like, and compiled a newer version of Linux-libre. It works well for me. It's not exactly what one would consider the easiest out of the box experience, but it suits me and is tailored to my needs/likes. I did consider using a tilable window manager such as i3, but for the programs I use as well as my workflow, it just made more sense to use XFCE. It's light, and stays out of my way. I think the default Trisquel environment is good for people who want a no frills desktop that works well out of the box. (Don't get me wrong, I think it's well done.) Me personally, I don't like branding much; nor am I a fan of Gnome fallback, so I opt for something else. My two cents. ;-)
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Ah, I'm the only one who voted GNOME fallback so far..
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Oh I see, interesting. Ill try that too and see how I like it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Ah mistook that for the early GNOME fallback then (a completely different thing)
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
The TC1000 is more than 12 years old. (it's that Tablet PC with a Transmeta Crusoe) I remember some old test that concluded that xfce is barely lighter than gnome 2. The only important thing is that it'll run fast enoughMaybe I'll try XFCE on an old (P3) PC and see how it runs there. But again, based on my experience with the *14-year-old* TC1000, my idea was that the ability to hide window content when moving/resizing it seems to me to be the most important factor to speed - which is more important than how much of the system resources is taken.

I like LXDE and Openbox. However, I most enjoy using Cinnamon desktop environment. It balances usability and good design. I hope it makes it into Trisquel 8, and perhaps it will replace the default desktop environment in the next release, together with an icon redesign.

Hello. My English level is not good. I like much the LXDE desktop because it consumes very little and it is possible to personalize. Also I like the Mate desktop, and Gnome3 too. I believe that the dektop environment for the next version of Trisquel is LXDE for Trisquel Mini and Gnome3 or Mate for Trisquel normal version. The links are three captures of my desktop. I use Trisquel 7 LXDE. Sorry for my bad english.

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
PLEASE INCLUDE THEM ALL! EVERY ONE OF THEM! Please! I will end up installing them all anyway, and I switch fairly frequently. I use KDE primarily, because it can do anything, and it does everything. But for my family I set them on GNOME 3, because it's so simple you can't mess anything up. For really old hardware I occasionally revive, I use the lightweight DEs. For my tablet that I use for school, I switch to Unity. Actually, the only DE I *don't* use is that default Trisquel gnome fallback thing. It's ugly and buggy and not really good at anything (sorry!).

Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
Anyway I think XFCE would be a great option for the Mini edition - based on my small experience of using the Compaq TC1000, I think any relatively light window manager (used in non-madly-heavy desktop shells) that can move windows like this should work: Xfwm4 does that( https://askubuntu.com/questions/574024/how-to-disable-windows-contents-to-be-moved-on-dragging-so-that-only-a-frame-i ), but I couldn't get Openbox to do that (not with Obconf, anyway). So going with XFCE wouldn't be a bad idea

The older I get, the newer a 20-year-old computer is; LOL.

I would still use GNOME, but make it more modern-looking (Like windows 10 and mac os), But still make it a 100% libre OS!

That's a screenshot of GNOME Classic, an official set of GNOME Shell extensions that's supposed to make it feel more like GNOME 2.

Use KDE

KDE5Actually I don't think something like that would end badly.
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
I remember some old test that concluded that xfce is barely lighter than gnome 2. Perhaps instead of having Trisquel and Trisquel mini we could just have Trisquel and metapackages and instructions to install the dozen DEs and window managers that are in the repos. To some people a 2 year old computer is old. To some old means 12 years old.

trolls gonna troll! but meh it was amusing. (though utterly and completely pointless...)
Re: [Trisquel-users] [POLL] What is your preferred desktop environment of Trisquel 8 ?
actually i think we should have xfce for the mini and gnome for the default. Although i think every desktop environment should be available on the dvd and net install

I would say to use MATE by default since it will be officially supported. I've grown to like Unity and I heard that the Amazon dash search and online information sharing will be disabled by default in Ubuntu 16.04/Trisquel 8: http://www.webupd8.org/2015/12/dash-online-search-to-be-disabled-by.html
