Install the package named "libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental" (in Slaine's and
Dagda's repository). Notice however the presence of the word "experimental"
in this name: you may go through stability issues.

wel, its kinda weird, since in ubuntu, i usually get notification to install
nvidia drivers at first boot... isnt there any other way?

and how do i add repos?

libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental is Free software. It is in Slaine's and Dagda's
repositories (no repository to add). You can, for instance, install it very
easily from Synaptic (in the System/Administration menu).

nVidia's driver is proprietary software. Neither Trisquel nor people on this
forum would help you install it.

What Ubuntu notifies is for available non-free drivers. Trisquel, unlike
Ubuntu, doesn't offer non-free software. Also, we don't help with
installing non-free software, because the idea of Trisquel and the
community around it is to use only free software.

2011-09-22 Thread Igor . Zobin
proprietary software isn't objected by the Ubuntu community, so they simply
include it in their distribution, or help the users to easily install it. But
there are lots of problems that come with it, even though sometimes it allows
to extend functionality of certain hardware. Trisquel is made by removing all
the proprietary software from Ubuntu, so if you want to use Trisquel, you
should try to use free software only, like intended by the developers. This
approach has many advantages, ethical and technical.

Bottom line, try to use the experimental drivers for your GeForce. If it
doesn't work as expected, aim for buying a card that will run better with
free software drivers and use Ubuntu in the meantime.

The applet that notifies you of hardware drivers, you see in Ubuntu, is
called Jockey, and is not in Trisquel, since it recommends non-free
software. To add a repository, you can use
"system->administration->software sources" or in the terminal do:

sudo add-apt-repository",
followed by the name of the repo to add. To use your added repo, first
do "sudo apt-get update",

to refresh the database.

thank you all for your insight. and for all the tips as well. like ive said,
im kinda neeb in this, but my hardwares are always keen to have problems with
linux. ive chosen trisquel for its simlpicity, most gr8 looks and for its
idea: freeware. i did not know however, that official drivers colided with
this, hence my preplexity.
i will do as you told and give fully detailed feedback, if this pleases the
community.
to be stated however, that it also must be a goal for devs, on making
trisquel compatible for older machines (that im sure it is).

most thanks and kudos.
PS: ill be feeding back in a while conting on your support as well ;)

libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental-dbg is for debugging. It will not change the
result but probably is essential to a good bug report. So, if you want to
help the developers...

Well, the developers of Nouveau (the driver you use) do not accept bug
reports from people using packages made by distributions :
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Bugs

As a consequence, you either need to report the bug to Ubuntu (Trisquel takes
this package from Ubuntu and does not modify it) or try to install the latest
version of the driver from Git ( http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/Source )
and report bugs to the developers.

If all you need is simple desktop effects (transparency, drop shadows etc.)
then you don't need hardware acceleration. You can turn on Metacity
compositing and it will work on pretty much any hardware.

Run gconf-editor, goto /apps/metacity/general and turn on "compositing
manager".
