Re: [Trisquel-users] Two questions about Gnome Flashback...
Greetings good sir. 1- Alt + (Right click) 2- $ dconf write /org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/button-layout "'close, minimize, maximize:menu'" if you change your mind about window button placement, then: $ dconf reset /org/gnome/desktop/wm/preferences/button-layout I hope this helps :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two questions about Gnome Flashback...
Both of these are perfect! Thank you.
[Trisquel-users] Two questions about Gnome Flashback...
On a fresh install of Trisquel, how do I... 1. Remove panel applets? It will only give me options to add applets, not remove them. 2. Take the minimize, maximize, and close buttons, and put them on the left? By default they are on the right and I don't know how to change that.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Two Questions
Thank you for all the replies. I gave riseup.net a second look and went with that. I noticed that in the mailing list that Fabian posted about they talk a lot about making your own web server. Is there a guide in the wiki to do this or anywhere else I could follow? If not and I figure out how to do it could I add the information to the wiki?

(After also getting tired of Google spying and, even, censoring of comments of mine, in some of its companies...) I recently started to use *Mail.ru*, instead - which has also an interface in English (and Spanish), and doesn't force you to give them your cell phone number. (http://e.mail.ru/cgi-bin/signup?from=mainlang=en_US). Also, I started using the *Yandex.com* search engine, instead, whenever possible. (Although, it is not as good as Google...) (Yandex.com is an English language implementation of the well-known Russian search engine Yandex.ru.)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two Questions
Very useful discussion, Fabian. Thanks for the post and the linkage.
[Trisquel-users] Two Questions
Someone recently posted about trisquel being in the PRISM break list. Just to refresh your memories the page is here http://www.prism-break.org. Anyway on to my question. This page has duckduckgo listed as an alternative to google. By the listing for duckduckgo there is a button that says duckduckgo is partly proprietary. Is this true? My next question is about gmail. I am still using gmail and looking to change, simply because I am trying to break my google addiction. The PRISM break page listed two alternatives. The rise up is not attractive at all to me after I checked it out, and bitmessage seems to be beyond my skill set and comfort zone. Anyway my next question is what are some alternatives to gmail? Thank you in advance for all replies.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two Questions
I'm don't really know about DDG, but I'm curious to find out. As for email, you can try https://lavabit.com/. I don't have an account myself, so I can't really testify on it, but it looks promising.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two Questions
I've got a lavabit account that I use with Mozilla Thunderbird. I like it. It's not hard to set up, and it does everything I need it to.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two Questions
Lavabit is good. I use it in addition to Riseup.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two Questions
Same here, Lavabit with Thunderbird, works flawlessly.

Some of the search engine source code is available at GitHub. I don't know about the JavaScript, but if you use https://duckduckgo.com/lite then it doesn't require proprietary software to use DDG. Re: [Trisquel-users] Two questions: kernel in Taranis 64 bits + log where messages are registered when shutting up system
Thanks for your answer, Magic Banana. Since 32 bits packages can also run on X86_64, I thought at first that generic meant it was the common to both architectures (i.e. the 32 bits one).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two questions: kernel in Taranis 64 bits + log where messages are registered when shutting up system
I forgot your second question. All logs are in /var/log. You can read them from the terminal with the less command (or tail -f to follow them live) but Gnome also has a graphical tool to do so (in the System/Administration menu). The one you are interested in is dmesg.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two questions: kernel in Taranis 64 bits + log where messages are registered when shutting up system
Thanks again, Magic Banana. I have been checking dmsg, but the thing is that all messages seems to me to be related to system initialization and not on shutting down. Is there any keyword or parameter I should look at in order to known what messages are specifically related to system shut down? I read in a post at Ubuntu forum that it was (something as) killed. I have been searching for that and similar terms (kill, shut, etc.) on dmsg and other logs but cannot find any of those terms nor anything pointing clearly to system shutting down. Only thing I can imagine is that if there are no problems on shutting down nothing gets registered in dmsg but not quite sure I am right -in any case, correct system loading seems to be registered, so it seems weird to me that the same would not apply to system shut down-.
[Trisquel-users] Two questions: kernel in Taranis 64 bits + log where messages are registered when shutting up system
Hi, I repeat here a couple of questions posted previously in the Spanish forum. 1) I updated Trisquel 3.5 64 bits to Taranis but it seems that the kernel I am running is a generic one, which from its description seems to be both for X86 and X86_64. These are the two packages I found related to the kernel: - linux-headers-2.6.32-24 - linux-headers-2.6.32-24-generic (the description says: Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.32 on x86/x86_64). I see there are other packages which apparently seem more appropriate for a 64 bits system (package and description): - linux-headers-2.6.32-24-server (Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.32 on x86_64) - linux-headers-2.6.32-24-preempt (Linux kernel headers for version 2.6.32 on x86_64) I am not clear if something went wrong with the update or if it is that I am actually using the correct kernel for Taranis 64 bits (I don't know which kernel I was running on 3.5). 2) Is there any log where I can check the messages sent by the system on shutting down. I have been checking different logs at /var/log/ but I can find any reference to actions specifically on shutting down. Thanks a lot for your answers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Two questions: kernel in Taranis 64 bits + log where messages are registered when shutting up system
They are differently configured. For example, you want a server to be responsive under an heavy load even if that means being slower in average. You want the generic kernel. ;-)
