[Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-08-15 Thread sv . tony
I haven't had any updates being installed for a while. Last time when the
Update Manager popped up, it never finished downloading anything and appeared
to be stuck. As I couldn't stop it or even close it, I had to re-start the
system. I thought this was a one-off problem but it's happened again today.

It says "51 updates have been selected. 27.7 MB will be downloaded" but all
the options are greyed out and I can't do anything. I waited for more than an
hour in case it was slow but it hasn't worked. The cursor just keeps
spinning.

It is obviously not installing any updates. Any help, please?

On the console:
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude upgrade
Make sure there are not any other instances of the updater or installer
working.

Thank you! I executed the command and it worked! It is up to date now.
I hope it will continue to work as normal from now on.

Thanks! It's working now.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-03 Thread xnchgyqk
I've been having this problem for a few weeks now in 6.0.1. I'm concerned
about my system not being up to date.

Attached is an image of the update manager. The screenshot program actually
failed to capture one detail accurately: the curser in reality is the round
spinning curser, not the white arrow as shown in the image. I don't know why
the screenshot program doesn't reproduce this faithfully.

For anyone interested in this problem, there's also a bug report:
https://trisquel.info/en/issues/12270

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-03 Thread xnchgyqk
I ran sudo apt-get upgrade as suggested by Magic Banana and this fixed the
problem *for me*. Thank you Magic Banana :)

Please don't anyone close the bug report on the basis of SVTony's and my
experience!

There are lots of non-technical users who don't know any other way to update
besides using the graphical update manager, and the graphical update manager
is supposed to just work without intervention.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-03 Thread mikko . viinamaki
This kind of problems are fairly nasty as I believe they lead to chicken and
egg kind of situations: if the update manager is broken, no update can fix it
as those can't be installed.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-04 Thread sv . tony
The fixes reported on this thread work once but then you always have to do it
that way because the Update Manager has never gone back to normal for me.

If I start the Update Manager, I get the same screen boaz was showing above.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-04 Thread anthonypineiro
Now a problem with the update manager! These type of problems will lead
people away from Trisquel. Lately this been an on going issue with updates
including this recently
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/where-are-all-security-updates I'm a patient
person but this is starting to get irritating.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-04 Thread christian
I have also experienced this issue for some updates in the past month or so,
and have had to use apt-get dist-upgrade from the terminal and reboot when it
happens.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-04 Thread anthonypineiro
Have better things to do with my time then rant. Yes *I* do have this same
problem. I also have that freedom to state my option. Again this is very
irritating.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-21 Thread xnchgyqk
It's the same for me. I still can't install updates using the graphical
update mananger due to this problem.

Recently the update manager showed thirty something updates available. I
opened the update manager and experienced the problem this thread is about.

So I ran sudo apt-get upgrade. It installed thirty something updates.

Now, the update manager shows up and shows two updates available:
linux-image-generic and linux-image-3.2.0.68-generic. But I can't install
them because of the problem.

When I run sudo apt-get upgrade it gives this output:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
  linux-image-generic
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.

Anyway this problem is very annoying because the update manager shows up in
the toolbar all the time and I can't get rid of it, nor do I want to open it
because then I'll never be able to close it except by restarting.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-21 Thread xnchgyqk
Right after I made this post I tried sudo apt-get dist-upgrade (thanks
Christianity) and that installed the last two updates.

So where it stands now, I do have a way to install all the updates via the
terminal, but the update manager is broken and I have no fix for it.

> I'll never be able to close it except by restarting.

You can use for example the xkill command if this unfortunate situation
should repeat. Open a terminal or alt+F2, punch in the command and then point
and click the offending window.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-21 Thread t8mf4nu6lizp
Thanks to kpengboy & GustavoCM there is now a fix. You can fairly easily
apply it yourself. See https://trisquel.info/en/issues/12270#comment-56900

Sounds complicated. I think I'll wait until there is a more user-friendly
solution.

Yes, I know you both pointed out to the fix but what I'm saying is that it
still sounds complicated...unless someone can explain the fix to me in an
easier way.

Run in terminal:

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-30 Thread mikokiko89
I have the same problem with update manager for nearly two months now. It's
nice that there is a patch but I don't have folder named pyton2.7 in
/usr/lib. What should I do then?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-30 Thread onpon4
Did you actually search for "pyton2.7" and not "python2.7"? If
/usr/lib/python2.7 actually doesn't exist, that suggests to me that your
system is completely broken. Python 2 is a basic dependency of many programs
in Trisquel.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-09-30 Thread t8mf4nu6lizp
Agree with onpon4. Use the shell tab completion feature when typing the path:
Type a few letters of a name in a path and then hit tab. The shell will
suggest you the existing filenames that could complete your path or if there
is only one matching, then add that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tab_completion

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-10-01 Thread mikokiko89
Sorry, my fault. I used [sudo cd] so it said no such command. Then I didn't
do a proper search. Those were the problems. I know that many programs are
coded in python in Ubuntu, so that should be the case in Trisquel as well.
Therefore it cannot exist since my system is/seems OK. I just thought that it
may be in another folder. Now that I found it easily using tab completion
feature thanks to lembas everything’s good. Thank you, people.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

I've got the patch in the folder where it belongs, but I can't seem to figure
out how to apply it. Can somebody point me in the direction of an appropriate
tutorial?

It's not a crisis, just a hole in my education.

Sudo apt-get upgrade seems to give me everything except the new kernel which
my old laptop can't use, while sudo apt-get dist-upgrade gives me the new
kernel for my newer desktop.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-10-02 Thread myself600
I've got the same issue yesterday. My Update Manager listed some abrowser and
linux-kernel updates so I wanted to upgrade however my root partition was
full so I closed the application beforehand, cleared my APT cache, and then
restarted the app again. But this time the manager was greyed out and
unresponsive so I was forced to end it via System Monitor.

I eventually fixed this problem by using Synaptic where the update went
smoothly (except that the torproject repository key signature was expired, so
I needed to disable it first). Today I've got three gnome-control-center
related updates and I was able to upgrade with the Update Manager without
problems.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-10-03 Thread dhood
My update manager has been "greyed out" for about two weeks making it
unusable. Adding to the issue running update via Terminal failed as well, it
would simply check for updates, and then do nothing.

Per MYself's post I tried synaptic which for some odd reason had not occured
to me to try and all 48 updates went in no problem.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-10-03 Thread legimet . calc
That's normal behavior if you ran apt-get update. It just updates its
database. You have to run apt-get dist-upgrade to upgrade everything.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

Thanks, lembas; my lappy is all pretty now and I have some new brain food. :D

I must have just downloaded the patch and missed the "sudo patch -d
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages -p1 < remove-format-args.patch" the first
time.

Better get over myself and get used to leaving Orca running until I can get
new glasses. ;)

Re: [Trisquel-users] Update Manager Not Working

2014-10-15 Thread lakbk89

lembas,

xkill surely closes the unresponsive task manager, but on reading its man
pages I came to know it simply closes the connection with the server;
eventhough most programs take a cue and terminate themselves, some programs
continue to work.

There is no guarentee that xkill will always kill your task manager; what if
it fails to do so?

It is better to use 'apt-get dist-upgrade' from a terminal until a permanent
fix is made.

I was using the default Trisquel 7,0 GNOME desktop and this also happened to
me. In my case, the cursor was black and in the screenshot it was white or
the other way around. For taking the screenshot I used gnome-screenshot.
I can't really help you with the update manager as I have really never used
it more than once.

I try not to use the gui update manager; using commandline tools is just
easier. Given that there is a working patch for the gui app, why not just
apply it and issue the patched update manager in the cycle?

I don't think it's related to unity.

You can use the command by Magic Banana or edit manually the sources file.
