Re: [Trisquel-users] a forum or subforum dedicated only to code contributors.

2017-04-23 Thread mr . j . spam . me
as i understand the proposal is to add a new separate distinct communication
channel - that would surely be counter-productive

some issues would be discussed on one channel while other issues would be
discussed on the other channel - worse than that, the same issues would be
discussed on both channels but with some opinions being expressed on only one
or the other so overall, such an arrangement can only hinder communication -
in order to be fully in the know, one would need to follow both channels

i do agree that this forum is not appropriate for developer discussions but
the following channels are already in place for that purpose:

* the #trisquel-dev IRC channel (for real-time communication such as weekly
meetings)

* the trisquel-devel mailing list (for proposals and longer discussions)
* the gitlab issue tracker(for in-progress feature progress)

the #trisquel-dev IRC channel for example, is essentially dead - this
indicates to me that the trisquel dev community is very small indeed and so
splintering communications is a terrible idea

also it should be pointed out that, as i understand, this user forum is
actually a mirror of the trisquel-users mailing list - so surely the devel
mailing list could be mirrored as a forum also if that is desirable for some
folks

so it would seem that the proposals such as drupal and mattermost are merely
to fill the desire to play with fancy new web-based SAAS toys - i see no
benefit to those over traditional "tried and true" channels that are already
in place - if the intention is sincerely to improve communications then my
suggestion would be to spend less time in a web browser and more time in the
IRC channel

I don't see the need for a forum. There is a mailing list intended for
development discussion/updates:

https://listas.trisquel.info/mailman/listinfo/trisquel-devel

Although my faith is lost, there a gitlab instance where anyone can register
and send pull requests. Getting them merged is another story.

https://devel.trisquel.info/

I don't think the communications methods are a problem, but the lack of
communication from Ruben is.

Framateam.org is a Mattermost instance.

I agree with what you say but we can have two channels of communications with
new contributors. mailing list and forum. Currently we have this trsiquel-dev
list: https://listas.trisquel.info/mailman/listinfo/trisquel-devel but I
suppose adding another channel would be beneficial.

If I were in the position of deciding about the project, I would also install
an instance of Mattermost[1] on the Trisquel infrastructure to ease the
communication of users.

My experience with other forums says otherwise. :)

- Most forums require you to log-in in order to reply.

  - Mailing lists allow you to answer with your own email.

  - I answer to this forum posts by the mailing list associated with it
(trisquel-users).

- Some forums don't provide notifications for new messages, even if a
topic is new for which you have never subscribed for, so you'll
probably end up missing possibly-interesting topics, unless you're
committed to visiting the forum page regularly.

  - Mailing lists notify you through email. :)

- Some forums which do have mailing lists associated with them, tend
garble the content of messages coming from the mailing list if these
  messages have "<" or it's counter-part.

2017-04-21 Thread mohammadi
I would like to ask the admins here, if it is possible to create a new forum
or subforum specifically for code contributors? So every person would be able
to create a new topic in the forum for each task she/he wants to accomplish
or any bug she/he wants to fix.

I would volunteer to mentor new contributors.
