2011-09-30 Thread K.M. Richards
Another option would be not to drive but instead take the Metro Red
Line subway, which has a station at Hollywood/Highland, literally
across the street from where Kimmel tapes.

There are park/ride lots at Universal City Station (one stop away) and
North Hollywood Station (two stops away). The Red Line runs every ten
minutes during rush hour, which would give you plenty of trip choices
to make it to the theatre well before 5:00pm.

Fare is $1.50 each way; you need to buy your ticket from the vending
machine before crossing the turnstiles. From the two aforementioned
stations, you need to take the train heading for Union Station to
get to Hollywood.

Red Line timetable:
http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/bus_overview/images/802.pdf
(I know the schedule is dated December 2010 ... we don't change the
subway schedule very often)

If you also want to avoid traffic to/from Television City (and
parking) for the SCG taping, Metro Line 780 is a fast connection
between Hollywood/Highland Station and Fairfax/Melrose:

http://www.metro.net/riding_metro/bus_overview/images/780.pdf
Fare is $1.50 per trip, exact change required. 780 is a Rapid line
which means it only stops at major cross-streets instead of every
couple of blocks ... Fairfax/Melrose is only four stops away via that
line.  (Bus destination sign is to Washington/Fairfax Transit Hub;
stop is literally in front of the subway station entrance on
Hollywood.)

Yes -- the day pass had gone up to $6 and then $7 for a while, but it's

Thanks. That's good news.

When they first started having day passes, they were 3 bucks. Even 5
dollars a day is a bargain.

This is helpful, thanks.  I managed to find a decent hotel within walking
distance to Hollywood and Highland, so I expect to take advantage of the subway
at some point.

With my flight schedule, I'll pretty much head to Television City straight from
LAX, grabbing lunch along the way or at Farmer's Market, depending on traffic.

I recommend the Cajun place in Farmer's Market. But if you decide to
go for the pizza, make sure they fire it on the vintage ovens instead
of the newfangled ones... tourists never know to ask for that.

Isn't there a meatloaf sandwich somewhere at the FM that Mark Evanier

I dunno why, but when I went to SCG in his early days (1-2 years) I was
able to park my rental car in the CBS TVC parking lot. Then,
afterwards, I drove up to around Kimmel, parked in a lot, and walked
around. Had dinner at some place in the Kodak theater complex.
Parking for me was not an issue. perhaps I lucked out.

Depends on your tastes of course, but, based on my own, I always encourage
anyone visiting that area with time for lunch (or late dinner) to go to
Canters. That may be because it still smells like my grandmother's
