[TV orNotTV] Re: Doctor falls from previous openers in homeland
Only 6.8 million folks tuned in to Peter Capaldi's debut, far from the 9.9M that welcomed Eccleston or the 7.7M that saw Matt Smith... the Variety http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/doctor-who-season-opener-starring-peter-capaldi-grabs-33-share-in-u-k-1201289236/ (link) writer noted it's a holiday weekend in the UK, not a good thing for anyone's ratings... This is overstating things a bit, to be honest. It's been referred to here as lowest rated Doctor debut since 2005 but there are mitigating circumstances for that. Eccleston's was the first episode for a decade and Tennant was on Christmas Day where everything gets enormous audiences. I noticed one article the other day using the figure for Tennant's final episode as Smith's debut, which is a bit off. The only fair comparison is with Smith's debut in April 2010, but that was before iPlayer and catch-up viewing ballooned to massive levels, some episodes of Doctor Who in the last few years have increased their ratings by nearly two million when they're all included. Yes, it was a holiday weekend - but the weather was awful in most places. One other mitigating factor was that the episode started at 7.50 and ran until after nine o'clock. That's the latest Doctor Who has ever been shown in the modern era (the TV Movie in 1996 ran to 10pm, but that's it) and I'm sure that must have had some impact because it's got an enormous child audience and there must have been more recording than usual. The good news from Who's perspective is that it was the highest rated show of the night by absolutely miles and one of the highest rated of the week and the demographics would have been absolutely fabulous. No chance of it being in any kind of danger of the axe. And it was brilliant as well, of course. Even my dad managed to last five minutes before falling asleep, which is praise indeed by his standards. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! Just having a quick look at the numbers, it looks like we can expect the Live+7 consolidated figure to jump by as much as 50% based on recent figures. I don't believe those figures will be out until the middle of next week though. Re: [TV orNotTV] Re: Doctor falls from previous openers in homeland
I caught the Dr. Who debut in a movie theater and it was an interesting experience. As I was walking up to the theater, a pre-teen boy wearing a fez and a t-shirt that said Bow Ties Are Cool got out of an SUV. A quite attractive late teen female, also in a fez and wearing the same t-shirt approached, and said thank you Mrs. Such-and-Such and took the boy by the hand and led him into the theater. I saw other fez hats and bow ties. Even a couple of electronic screw drivers. A few seemed to be dressed like Tennant. The movie had a intro by Strax as he reviews the different doctors. The few clue this wasn't an ordinary movie event came when they got to Tom Baker and the crowd cheered loudly. They were silent again until they got to Eccleston and the crowd cheered again, and cheered even louder for Tennant. Smith also got a loud cheer. Based on reaction it would be difficult to gauge if the crowd liked Tennant or Smith better. My favorite, Eccleston, was clearly third. It was fun watching the movie with so many Dr. Who nerds. The enthusiasm was contagious. One problem is that the crowd laughed so hard and so long that they covered some of the dialogue. I grew tired of Smith and this was the first time I've thought the change in doctors was an improvement. I like the tone they're setting with Capaldi. I particularly enjoyed the scene where the audience is closely scrutinizing Capaldi's face for a clue to what had just happened off camera and Capaldi turns and looks at the camera with a dark, angry stare. *MINOR SPOILER** It's clear that in trying to get Clara to accept the new doctor that they are really trying to get the audience to accept a new doctor after two progressively younger ones. I hope it succeeds. But I guess most of what is being cut will be highlights, since at 2:00 pm (PT) there will not be much to report most days. That makes pairing him with OTL logical, and Olbermann will mostly be the topical opinion stuff, not the daily sports news wrap-up stuff. I can live with that, though I do like to hear Keith recap the daily MLB events. It will also make it easier for me to record during the day (even on the east coast do many people get home from work in time to watch television live at 5:00?) and watch maybe after my Stewart/Colbert hour, which would make a nice fit. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! I had a great angle on Morneau running and Peavy's subsequent balk, which still makes me laugh. I did have a strong rooting interest, and even I laughed at that balk. One can watch a hell of a lot of baseball games and not see a major league pitcher do something like that. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! [TV orNotTV] David Chase is pissed
As well he should be, after a good friend of his, critic and writer Martha Nochimson, *had* to know what happened at the end of *The Sopranos*, so Chase told her *something*, which she reported at Vox http://www.vox.com/2014/8/27/6006139/did-tony-die-at-the-end-of-the-sopranos (link)... his rep Leslee Dart repeated the long-held position to TheWrap http://www.thewrap.com/sopranos-creator-david-chases-rep-blasts-report-claiming-tony-sopranos-still-alive/?utm_source=newsletterutm_medium=emailutm_campaign=contactology (link) that there is no answer... I read the Nochimson piece earlier today, and was curious about this. Just before she gives Chase's answer in the text, she writes: On occasion he [Chase] breaks his reserve, but makes it clear that I am not to write about anything he says that is an interpretation of his own work, since he believes that the art of entertaining is leaving the audience imagination to run wild. So when he answered the is Tony dead question, he was laconic. On first reading, I assumed this meant that Chase had given her permission to just write the one word answer to the question. But when I went back and read it a couple of more times, it seemed that Chase never did give her that permission, and indeed was pretty clear that the answer to that question was off the record. She does not address this question in the rest of the article. I don't blame him for being pissed. -- -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! PGage, to JW: ... and watched the Giants game (another kind of disaster) I was at that game, and since I didn't have a strong rooting interest found it enjoyable.
