JW, to Doug Fields, in part: Hmmm.now that I read back over this thread, maybe we *are* talking about two different things. I'm specifically talking about the NFL's blackout rule. I'm not aware of any rules affecting the broadcast of the home games of any of the other major sports. The other rule may be the one that allows local rightsholders to demand that other entities be blacked out. For instance, if the Cubs are playing the Pirates, WGN America will often have a slide up (courtesy of the local cable company, I'm sure) saying that FCC rules bar them from showing the game in Pittsburgh. Title 47 Code of Federal Regulations, section 76.111. Companions are 76.127 which covers satellited events, and 76.128 further explains the definition of territory that may be subject to a blackout. For those who don't remember, Mother Jersey has been mobility-impaired, and confined between a bed and wheelchair, since the summer of 2011. She also suffers from annoying, but not life-threatening, memory losses. She frequently refers to brand-name, well-advertised OTC medicines by names that in no way resemble their actual trademarks, or by other names, once used by similar products dating back to the Golden Age of TV, that at best have over the years become fringe brands taken over by opportunist companies in otherwise-boring cities in, say, Arizona or Texas. Joe Hass, to moi: Bob's post earlier made me think about the idea of NSFW: namely that simply labeling something NSFW doesn't really make it clear why it's NSFW. For example, the article he linked to would be perfectly fine for my office (an ad agency) because it's only language. Now, if you were to post a link to a nude photo taken of a star who's now suing over it, yeah: I'm going to break out the ol' iPhone and use ATT's bandwidth to read that item. I've always felt that NSFW deserves, like the TV rating system, an additional letter after it for why you think it's NSFW: P for photo, L for language, A for auto-playing audio, and V for auto-playing video. So if I were to link to the unedited version of Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines, I'd note NSFW-V As with everything related to the Internet, I do not expect this to carry on past me, but I just thought I'd share. Back to finding navigation models. Great idea, but now that I've seen the referred-to post in GG, I should have put the notation next to the link, not in the subject... PGage, to Adam Bowie: I have always assumed that in the US, making baseball (and by analogy football and basketball and some others) easily accessible to as much of the public as possible is part of the public service the networks owe the people in exchange for their use of the public airwaves to make tons of money. That model has basically broken down here in practice - but is there a similar understanding in the UK - at least in history? While some degree of sports may have been considered part of what was basically in the public interest back in the pre-satellite years, there's never been any mention of them in the applicable regulations... they talk about things like promoting diversity, but things like sports events are left to the discretion of the license holders...
