as I was booking my tickets earlier this month for my 30 rock NBC studio
tour, I noticed several weeks were unavailable in October.I'm guessing
they have cancelled studio tours while the hallways are setup for the scary
stuff.

8th Ave around 48th.  I'm learning this is the border between Hell's
Kitchen and theatre district.   Omg the number of theatres is nuts.So
far the favorite part of the city is Central Park -- great people watching
and chill ambience.


We saw Hell's Kitchen last night (fantastic) and probably going to &Juliet
tonight (to hear all of Max Martin's hit songs)

Hello again, it's Brian Stelter — yes, really.

I am thrilled to share that I am returning as the lead author of CNN’s
Reliable Sources newsletter, the digest I founded in 2015.

But this is not going to be a "Back to the Future" remake. The media
industry has matured, CNN has evolved, and I have changed a lot since I
signed off two years ago. I loved my old life as the anchor of a Sunday
morning show but, to borrow some lingo from my video game blogger days, I
finished that level of the game. Time for new levels, new challenges.

I'm returning to CNN in a brand new role as Chief Media Analyst, which
means I'll be appearing on air, developing digital content, and helming
this newsletter. It will be different, because I am different.

I always scoffed at people who said "getting fired was the best thing
that's ever happened to me" — until, well, it happened to me. After 20+
years as a news junkie, I changed my habits and tuned out for a bit. I also
changed my vantage point, moving from Manhattan to a horse farm near one of
Donald Trump's golf clubs. I experienced the news more like an everyday
consumer, and in doing so, I learned a whole lot about the attention
economy and the information ecosystem. I’m looking forward to sharing what
I learned with you.

I was incredibly lucky to have time as a stay-at-home dad. In the hours
when 7-year-old Sunny and 5-year-old Story were at school, I tried on a
variety of other hats: Harvard fellow, BBC talking head, magazine writer. I
authored a book, and more importantly had time to read lots of others'
books. I wrote for more than 20 publications, from The Atlantic to WIRED,
and learned about the ups and downs of freelance life. And I hosted a
podcast for Vanity Fair, "Inside the Hive," which I will continue to lead
through the end of the year.

All the while I remained an avid reader of Reliable Sources, and especially
admired Oliver Darcy's fearless reportage, as well as his decision to
launch Status last month. I'm rooting for Oliver and, as I have told him
personally, I think we're going to complement each other wonderfully.

With the help of incredible CNN colleagues on the media beat like Hadas
Gold, Jon Passantino and Liam Reilly, I want to reimagine the Reliable
Sources digest and deliver what you value most. Everyone and everything is
a source now. So what's reliable?

Reliable Sources will officially relaunch on Monday, September 9, but

It's my absolute last preference of what shows are taping while we are
there. We are wait-listed for the late night shows (Meyers, Colbert,
Fallon).  TDS is sold out.

[TV orNotTV] kindaTV: Canada soccer today

CBC has a podcast episode today (~25 mins long) about the Canada vs Messi
(argentina) game tonight.   They speak about the recent history of the
Canadian team and performance.

The reason I'm sharing this to this list is that there is a few minutes
where they speak about Fox Sports coverage.   Fox commentators blatantly
doing fox-ish things saying 'It should be America playing, not Canada'.
 I didn't realise that hate had oozed from the news division to the sports
division of Fox.

was Formerly the licensing guy at Corus.  He doesn't spill any internal
beans, but does provide a lot of context on how foreign licensing of

and how things have changed now (streaming, FAST, and no "genre protection"
on linear channels).

[TV orNotTV] nbc and usa swimming olympic trials

this past week has been the USA olympic swimming trials.NBC is running
the finals at 8pm most evenings. While we are at home, we can watch nbc
on cable.   When we are at cottage/lakehouse on Starlink, i tried to go
through the proper hoops of VPN (trial) to make me look american, then try
to use peacock trial or nbcolympics, but that didn't work for me either.

So reddit led me to the following 2 options which i offer for information.

All Live TV Channels - Thetvapp.to 

there is  a NBC feed from nyc on that page which gives us NBC for the hour
we need it.

There is also this page which i think gives the same video feeds.

KLCiS - Free International IPTV Channels 


that first link reminds me of the canadian site iCraveTV in 1999 which
streamed OTA signals to the net.

I'm also looking for suggestions for an NYC visit, possibly in September of
this year.

A tour of 30 Rock is a must for me, I'm also wondering what others might

It's the fall of 1984. I'm thirteen years old. It's a Wednesday night, and
I'm watching "Charles in Charge," a sitcom starring Scott Baio - the actor
I'd previously seen on "Happy Days."

It's okay. Not great, but not bad, either.

Then boom! A flash of light! A roar of sound. A time traveler from the
future - 2024, to be exact - appears in my living room.

After exchanging pleasantries, he says:

"Someday in the not too distant future - four decades from now - everyone
will own a computer, and they will all be connected to something called the
internet. The World Wide Web. You'll actually own six or seven computers."

"Really?" I ask. "Will I be rich?"

"No. It's actually not too weird to own more than one computer in 2024.
Seven is a lot, but I'm counting all of your devices, and your business
requires them. Anyway... all human knowledge will be available at all times
on these computers - some that fit in your pockets and have no buttons.
This means that everyone on the planet will essentially be connected at all
times, which means you will be connected to Scott Baio."

"The guy on the TV?" I ask.

"Yes," the time traveler says. "So you'll be able to send him messages via
a program called Twitter, though it will later be renamed X because the
smart, strange, possibly evil man who bought Twitter loves the letter X so
much that he attaches it to everything he owns, including one of his kids.

Except you won't be able to send messages to Scott Baio via Twitter because
Donald Trump was the President of the United States for four years."

"Wait, what?" I ask.

"Yes, that Donald Trump," the time traveler says. "And he was a monstrous
idiot as President. Also as a human being.

But Scott Baio—that actor on your television—loves Donald Trump, so when
you sent messages to Trump criticizing his policies, Scott Baio got mad and
blocked you. He stopped you from being connected to him."

"The guy on the TV - Charles in Charge - is going to block me?" I ask.

"Yes. Oh, Donald Trump will block you, too. He's a fragile little snowflake
of a man, so he will block you for criticizing him, but then you sue him,
and the case goes all the way to the Supreme Court, where you win, so
Donald Trump will be forced to unblock you."

"I do all that?" I ask, suddenly impressed by my future self.

"Not on your own," the time traveler says, "You join some other people in
the lawsuit, so it's not Matthew Dicks vs. Trump, but yes. You do that.
Your life will always be a little nuts."

"In a good way?" I ask.

"Only sometimes," the time traveler says. "Sometimes it's horrendous. But I
digress. After Donald Trump blocks you, the US Capitol will be attacked by
his followers after he loses the election, and he uses Twitter and other
Twitter-like programs to incite the riot, so Twitter will ban Donald Trump."

"And Donald Trump will go to jail?" I ask.

"No," the time traveler says. "He might become President again."

"Why?"

"Damn, good question. Anyway, I thought you should know that in about 40
years, you and that guy you're watching on TV will have beef via a means of
communication you can't begin to imagine yet, and it will result in him
blocking you from messaging him. Weird. Huh?"

Yes," I say. "2024 sounds crazy!"

"Nah. 2020 and 2021... those were the crazy years."

i just realised that I don't think I watched the last 1-2 seasons of Magnum
PI, as I was out of town in University and doing other important things.

On a related note, I have 5 seasons of new Magnum PI on my plex server that
I don't think I've watched much of either.I seem to recall reading that
around season 4 or 5 that Magnum and Higgins get it on.

Maddow and joy Reid spent significant air time ripping the {MS}NBC
announcement last week.  On Monday Maddow spent her whole A-block on
specific fascists, fascist-enablers (a fav topic of hers) and wrapping with
the ultimate MSNBC decision on the weekend to Not have Ronna on MSNBC.

I was kinda impressed that the shows were allowed to speak against the
top.  But maybe that only happens at Fox.

Your mention of BBC Sounds..

I am now commuting an hour each morning and afternoon.   Sometime in the
past few years I must have installed BBC Sounds on my phone, so one drive
while I was tired of SXM, Terrestrial, Podcasts I hit the BBC Sounds app
and listened to BBC 1 for a drive.  My impression is not about the
music itself -- I'm ok with the music.  What did surprise me is the amount
of DJ talking between each song (equivalent of "Shout out to Bob from Leeds
that messaged us, and Tawny from New Zealand" between each song) and
perhaps the abbreviation of songs.It didn't seem like they were playing
each song in full (or each song is only 2:30 long).   Is BBC 1 usually
hyper like this?   Or maybe it was because it was 9pm UK time.

I liked the earlier start time, as it allowed by TiVo to buffer things and
I could bloop the commercials, and still get to bed at 1030pm.

I liked the approach of 5-former winners introducing the nominees for the
acting categories.

As for Kimmel, he did alright.I honestly thought the "mean tweet" he
read was scripted, but now I'm hearing that it was real.   Here's an EW
article on that.  Jimmy Kimmel was told not to read Donald Trump message at
Oscars (ew.com)

when I heard it was Mark Rebillet, I thought "oh cool".   Then as he
started his set it hit me Mark takes a while to get his loops and
effective groove going.   Thus, giving the guy 4 minutes (or whatever
snippet they gave him) was not really a good thing for him.

As usual, within after a month that Bell 'celebrates' or brings awareness
to mental health through their Bell Let's Talk campaign, Bell media sells
of a truckload of radio stations and CTV cuts 4800 jobs.   (It's like
clockwork every year).

In general, no local noon news; no local weekend news.Only a few major
markets keep those.

I am 70 minutes into this audio file, and it's great.  It seems they
have edited it so the time-checks ("it's 8:03 in Cincinnati") are in order.

If you liked WKRP, I highly suggest you download the audio file to your
phone so you can play it in the car, or walking the dog, or whatever.

I haven't heard the Red Wigglers commercial yet, but I hope to.

1) wife learned the rules of football.
2) watched a number of KC games with me.
3) Asked at the beginning of the DET-SF game "are there any players in this
game that are going out with a megastar?   If no, I'm going to watch
Netflix".

[TV orNotTV] Quickie Review: BEEF (Netflix).

I think it was released in the spring of this year. I recall some social
media vitality.

It's a comedy/drama.  It's brilliantly written and brilliant
cinematography.   Funny, dramatic, touching.

My son watched all 10 eps and recommended it.   My wife and I have two
episodes left.   We all thought the arc closed at episode six.

If you liked The Bear, you will probably like BEEF too.

Also nominated for some Emmy's , so go watch it.

I should add... that after I saw that announcement I looked into it from a
Canadian perspective. Doesn't look like it applies to us yet.   I pay
$9.99 CAD per month for Amazon Prime (the shipping and some discounts) and
also get Prime Video (movies, some TV shows) included.

of course, our content library offered by Prime Video is probably much more
limited than the US

Canada (including the peacock and Amazon Prime games). I recall seeing
some extra filler content in the last quarter. Maybe I should rewind the

I was at a fundraiser dinner last night and the entertainer was a tribute
act to the 50s and 60s. Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, buddy Holly, Elvis and
one other I did not stay for.

At age 56 these acts are known to me but not all the songs.  The age 65-75+
people at my table were "you don't know THIS SONG?!"

So, yeah Tom's absolutely right.

I'll wait until age 75 for a fundraiser with Rush, Yes, Genesis tribute
acts.

I haven't watched the episode in question, but I have seen the series
before.   It is typical "Investigative Journalism" where they go deep in a
subject.Can't recall if there is a US equivalent, but I'm thinking of
Keith Robertson.

I'm really not sure what stirred the origin of this story.

[TV orNotTV] quickie review: Platonic (apple tv)

I thought it was a romcom from the trailer.It's almost like one.  I 
guess it fits in the "buddy" genre.

You kind of have to tolerate Seth Rogen (if he's not your fav). But I 
think the rest of the cast were great had some great fast lines that made 
me laugh.

The series is 10 x 30minute episodes.   I suggest doing the first 2-3 eps 
before making a full judgement.

The "bloopers" at the end of episode 10 are not worth waiting through the 
foreign credits.

Platonic is available on Apple TV or your favorite Betamax loaning services.

of friends watched it after school. Thus, I know who Calliope and Eugene

With all the tv channels they have (ctv News Channel, cp24, bnn) I wonder
if they will start to shut some of them down.

The channel proliferation decades ago, and now the shrinking of streaming,
I wonder if some of the decades old channels will get killed off by some of
these conglomerates.
