[TV orNotTV] Re: Secrest... in at Today?
David Hartman did "GMA" for years and he wasn't a news guy either, but when ABC News took over the show, they insisted that he have a equal co-host- in that case Joan Lunden, and it didn't shock too many people when Roone Arledge got Charles Gibson to replace David as co-host with Joan. [TV orNotTV] Re: Secrest... in at Today?
The problem with Today, since we're viewing the narrowing of the ratings gap between it and GMA as a problem rather than a cyclical fluctuation, is not Matt Lauer's eventual replacement. After all, the narrowing has occurred even with Lauer there. It is Ann Curry sitting in the (stage) right-hand seat that viewers appear to be rejecting. If it were me, I'd make the bold move of adding Seacrest AND re-signing Lauer. I think that's a combo women viewers would love, while my guess is that men wouldn't care. Make it a three person panel with Lauer carrying the news load and related interviews; Curry handling news features and on-location hosting of special split editions of Today; and Seacrest running with the lighter/entertainment news related items. Make adding Seacrest added-value rather than compensatory replacement. Ah, no. On the other hand, Matt Lauer was the New York PM Magazine host and was at NATPE the year before he got the newsreader gig on Today pushing a fitness program. I don't think anyone is saying that only people who have been working in hard news since high school deserve senior positions in broadcast news. Most people were something else before they got into news. I actually might be less horrified at the idea of Seacrest serving as a news reader on Today than as one of the senior anchors. I would be even less horrified if he worked for several years in local news before going to Today (as Lauer did, before he hosted PM Magazine in New York). -- TV or Not TV The Smartest (TV) People! I believe you're thinking of Bryant Gumbel, Kevin. Brokaw was an anchor at the NBC OO here in L.A. before jumping to the full network.
