[TV orNotTV] Tribute to the late J.J. Jackson (original MTV VJ)

2014-03-16 Thread K.M. Richards
I am a contributor to the online radio aircheck site
ReelRadiohttp://www.reelradio.com.
And this morning that site broke format to pay tribute to J.J. Jackson,
best known as the black VJ during MTV's first five years. He passed away
ten years ago tomorrow, and to mark that sad anniversary, ReelRadio has
digitized my copy of the aircheck of the last two hours of alternative
album rocker KEDG The Edge from 1989, which J.J. was program director of
(and which he considered to be the pinnacle of his radio work).

This is the first time ReelRadio has featured an aircheck of an album rock
station; it concentrates on classic top-40 stations and DJs, but the
curator and I felt honoring the late Mr. Jackson was worth making the
exception.

Hoping a few of you will be inclined to check it out. ReelRadio is a
non-profit site, so this is by no means a commercial plug.

2014-03-16 Thread Kevin M.
Thanks for sharing, K.M.

To me, JJ will be best known as an LA DJ during the KMET/KLOS era of
freeform rock 'n' roll in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Jim Ladd wrote fondly
of him in his sort-of true story Radio Waves that highlighted that time
in radio history. Among his most noteworthy achievements was that he
recognized punk rock at a time so many others dismissed it. LA station
100.3 The Sound has had a few Mighty Met retrospectives, and JJ Jackson has
been mentioned often, and with great respect. I didn't get cable TV until
the late 1980s (OK, if I'm honest, my older brother sometimes jacked the
cable for either OnTV or SelectTV from a nearby utility pole, but that was
it), so JJ's time on MTV isn't something I can speak of, but I'd have
rather heard him between videos than Adam Curry.
