I believe that search does not return statuses of protected users (even when authenticated, though I may be wrong and should be corrected if I am). In that case, yes, you could potentially receive fewer results than statuses/mentions. so statuses/mentions will retrieve mentions from protected users' timelines, even if you are not authorized to see them?
