Re: [TYPO3-english] Releasing TYPO3 6.2 LTS under GPL Version 3
Hi I have some more thoughts why TYPO3 6..2.0 Final should be released actually as TYPO3 7.0 LTS! 1. The TYPO3 6.2 LTS / TYPO3 7.0 LTS Version would be in place for a couple of years and during this time hopefully NEOS will get a bit more mature to be used by a bigger crowd as right now! 2. The TYPO3 6.2 LTS / TYPO3 7.0 LTS Version is starting a new area in many ways as many things which were working before Version 6 or before Version 6.2 even are no more working like before! The Code of many extensions needs to be changed anyway and those extensions could be rereleased under GPLv3 too to be again full compatible with TYPO3 6.2 LTS / TYPO3 7.0 LTS 3. Extension Developers, Designers, Packagers and Integrators who wold like to get their stuff also being easier to use or transferable to NEOS when it would be ready would benefit from the change to GPLv3. @Georg I am aware that the relicensing is not easy, but NOW is the right time do ask all those contributors incl. myself, if they are OK with the switch to GPLv3. This could be done either in written, email to contact the people or perhaps even in adding a field in the extension repository or git like you do already with the contributor license! BUT it has to be separate from this contributor license which quite a lot of people not will sign. You could set a timeframe until people need to answer the request. IMHO Now is the time in doing this and simply creating a MAJOR Version TYPO3 7.0 LTS out of Typo3 6.2 to make the change also very visible to the public! Right. etc. One very important factor in doing this would be to provide packages. Fabien is already trying to improving the Introduction Package using Bootstrap, Kay with Themes and Claus Due who provides lots of bootstrap based Extensions and Joey with Grid Elements and many more people who use meanwhile bootstrap and other modern coding approaches which are not compliant with GPLv2 because they have been released under a license which is not in the whitelist of GPLv2. http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html#GPLIncompatibleLicenses Check out the incompatible Licenses! I think it is at the time to make TYPO3 ready for the new CODINGS in releasing Version TYPO3 6.2.0 LTS Final under GPLv3 Here the thoughts: We are v2 or later. I guess the question is are we re-licensing all the software that is in the distribution package as gpl v2 or later? Or are they keeping their respective licenses? If we are re-licensing then I think we should re-license the distributions as gpl v3 or later. This would solve the incompatibilities. I am not sure why we shouldn't. The reason we ask for gplv2 in code is because we haven't relicensed core yet. I don't think there is any legal/technical/spiritual reason why someone would object to making the distribution gpl v3 or later. Technically it's already gpl v3. Beside this it is a matter of fact that we would have already GPLv3 if the TYPO3 5 would have worked out. Ok Now we get Neos and Version 6 so why not releasing Version 6.2 LTS which breaks anywhay with many other conventions and things which were in place before to make it compatible again with the modern Free Open Source World incl. Bootstrap usage and other similar good code usages released under similar licenses like bootstrap. --- Benefits: A transition from 6.2 to NEOS would be much easier in Terms of Licensing The use of modern Codings i.e. Bootstrap inside a TYPO3 package would be immediately legal with the change to Version 3 Background: i.e. Bootstrap is released under Apache 2 License which is not compatible with GPLv2 because of their Terms in Redistribution: http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html *4. [TYPO3-english] Sphinx and Windows
Dear community members, The T3DD13 are coming soon and I took some hours to make my Sphinx extension [1] compatible with Windows. The compatibility is not yet released to TER but available off git repository [2]. Windows users typically miss the Python environment (and a few command line utilities), and should follow the instructions on [3] Feedback is really appreciated, I plan to release a new version on TER before T3DD13, I guess this will help many users to start with ReST and Sphinx much more easily than if they would have install and configure everything manually as described in the wiki. Sorry Georg A discussion about Licensing is not at all trolling but necessary IMHO. Sorry that you can't accept this! Nobody asked you specifically to answer those questions. Actually you brought up the theme by questioning the integration of bootstrap as a general use for TYPO3 Extension developers and in deed there is a problem with packaging! This is why it should be discussed here before the Packages roll out! Do you have alternatives which would work i.e. also with GPLv2 for Packages? An LTS release is a major release and until now it is not ready to be published as final. So there is enough time to think about how TYPO3 could get to be GPLv3. Of course if you would say here now that you are against moving to GPLv3 this discussion would be simply obsolete perhaps as you mentioned before. By the way Drupal is in the same process in discussing it since longer time as they have pretty much the same issue! I personally have nothing against a move to GPLv3 and would also support this with my OK if necessary! I think many others here in the list and not in the list would simply think the same and would be OK if TYPO3 LTS Version would move to GPLv3. Why not simply give it a try instead of blocking fruitful discussions. I guess many developers even not know about those problems at all and a discussion would create also awareness that i.e. the developer would need to add the Apache License text and all the other mentioned things to his redistributed TYPO3 Package, and a Website is simply a distributed Package! Hi, Licensing questions are never easy because they involve all kinds of legal issues. This year there is budget for licensing issues. Please contact Olivier Dobberkau on how to proceed. Before any technical operations are done (using some third party tool/library/etc or changing the license text) the legal issues must be solved. Re: [TYPO3-english] OT Frontend development strategies
not compatible with GPLv2, therefore it is kind of hard mixing + contributong those As long as you don't provide the bootstrap code itself in that extensions, there is no licensing problem at all. Same for any other framework. You just have to make sure that your extension produces HTML output that matches the structure of the target framework. i.e. Using class=row and class=span3 or the like for a bootstrap package. This will be enough for a base package, that will just work with HTML and TypoScript to provide the necessary Grids and modified tt_content setups. To get the themes in, you will need an extension that works as a downloader and/or installer for ready made packages, which don't contain any GPLed code, but just the necessary files for JS, CSS and additional TypoScript. So the license can be completely different from the one used for the extensions, since it is allowed to use packages with different licenses, while it is not allowed to provide them within one downloadable and/or installable extension. Actually it is exactly the same as if you would download twitter bootstrap and then put it into a TYPO3 based website you have made for a client, just the process of downloading and installing will be automated and the HTML will already match the framework. Re: [TYPO3-english] Releasing TYPO3 6.2 LTS under GPL Version 3
Hi Georg, IMHO INAL ... Georg Ringer wrote: and as FYI: It is really not easy to change a license as you have to ask *every* contributor since Kasper startet the project and if one is against it, the project fails. Not true here, because we explicitly ship as GPLv2 or later. This allows us to move to GPLv3 or later without asking everyone. It would be different if we would want to switch Apache v3 or even some other license. Actually you never *change* licenses, but you *re-license* under another license. So the old license stay in effect for the revisions of the code. Actually, every contributor can license its contributions under as many licenses as he want; that is why you can change a license by asking every contributor. Regarding GPLv2+ and GPLv3(+): The GPLv2+ license *explicitly grants* to repackage the software with any later version of the GPL. That means that anyone — with access to the source code — may legally ship the TYPO3 CMS source to a third party with the GPLv3(+) license. No legal consultation needed here, besides whether this section of the GPLv2+ complies with the law. I never heard any doubts about this, thus I do not see any need for a legal consultation in this single mater. What however could use legal consultation, is the mixing with different licenses, although for the major open source licenses (e.g. Apache) one can find legal investigations on the official homepages of those license organizations. A more interesting question would be whether we *can or should change existing file copyright header*. Another question is whether we *can or should change the years in the copyright headers* as those are needed to calculate the *expiration* of the copyright. Adjusting them every year — as we do currently — will lead to wrong assumptions. so it is not just about changing some text files and you are done. Actually the actual changing of the text files results in complicated license questions, while changing the project license from GPLv2+ to GPLv3(+) is not a big deal at all. [TYPO3-english] Image composition register/if
Greetings, I am trying to display an images content element so that the images are merged into one photo in groups of three and if there is not an even group of 3, omit the remainder images (i.e. don't render an image at all if one space would be missing). It seems to work for a moment but then I reload the page and the register values are blank and so the logic fails and either all the images generate or none and I can toggle between these cases with .if.negate = 1. I'm sure there's something simple I am missing here to make it work--I can tell it's not quite right because the register:bannerCount values are double what I would expect (for example, 22 instead of 11). I'm not opposed to importing from css_styled_content where I get a correct image count but I'm not sure how to source the images from from GIFBUILDER in that case (I don't need click-enlarge to work). In short, I'm not sure if my use of if is incorrect, if this register is incorrect, or probably even both. :-) Any advice? Many thanks.
