Don't try it on a large system though. It takes for ever to traverse all
the open handles and hogs a whole cpu while doing it.

Very useful for SMB though.

[U2] Universe on Linux

2005-01-30 Thread Sara Burns
Last year we were investigating running UniVerse on Windows 2003 but have
since decided we would prefer to go down the Linux path.

Some concern has been raised with our executive about the sensibility of
going down the Linux path. I have therefore been asked to find some
reference sites who would be prepared to speak to our CEO. I suspect that
such sites do not exist in Wellington or in New Zealand so the speaking to
the CEO might not be so easy.

Are there any sites who would be prepared to give an opinion regarding the
suitability of running UniVerse 10.1 on Linux for a user base of 320.
(We are currently running UniVerse 10.0.11 on AIX 5.2)

You may contact me off-line at the address below.

Thanks for your assistance.

For reference, if someone really wants to integrate their Win32 _or_
*nix-based U2 environment with VSS, CVS, or any other external tool that
has an API, it's possible. I've sort of specialized in this type of
development.

That said, MS VSS happens to have a poorly documented interface which is
very difficult to implement. Personally I would discourage integration
with VSS unless it was absolutely required. PRC is the standard in our
industry, and for freeware CVS is the most popular.

And having said _that_ (and my real point), no version control system is
really totally secure if that's your goal. All you can do is do your best
to implement the best system that you can, which is what I believe SOX is
all about anyway. VSS has a long history of losing and trashing data, and
even CVS is vulnerable, as this quote from the CVS home page attests:
"The cvshome site is currently being thoroughly cleaned as a direct result
of an exploitative code set that attacks a cvs security violation. The
publication of this code makes all sites running cvs with any remote
protocol vulnerable."

(And what does "Unclassified" mean in a topic title? Deviation from the
main subject?)

Unclassified RE: [U2] [UV] SOX Compliance and Universe

2005-01-30 Thread HENDERSON MIKE, MR
Meeta,

Microsoft Visual Source Safe [VSS] is a comprehensive source-code
management product directed (surprise!) at MS development languages.
An Australian U2 VAR (?maybe PRISM?) sells [or used to, anyway] an
extension for VSS for U2, but I don't think it'd be useful to you unless
you are also using MS development languages, and doing your development
on Windows.

Subject: RE: [U2] [UV] SOX Compliance and Universe

The previous company I worked at uses what I believe is now a Microsoft
product called SourceSafe. It would 'check out' a programs source code,
which means making it writeable and changing the ownership to the user
who checked it out. Then when changes were done, the user checks it back
in, which then makes the source code read only. Source Safe keeps a full
track of what was changed etc. This is in a Unix environment. We wrote
our own user interface to keep track of jobs, but it also runs as a
windows interface to check out/check in items. This only works on DIR
type items, it would not work on any items that are a basic file, such
as Dictionaries. Our interface manually kept track of dictionary type
items as needed.
