RE: [U2] [UV][SB+] International

2005-10-14 Thread U2
Dear Mike,

No experience in SB+, only in UV

Look into the documentation on NLS

1) Date
- does the date display / entry need to be localized.
2) Multi-byte characters
- printing will be an issue that need to be tested throughly. Using command
like PRINT MYCHAR 'L#10' will NOT align the multi-byte characters correctly,
need to use command PRINT FMTDP(MYCHAR,'L#10'). I think there is a patch
from IBM on this issue (VLIST ???)
- Storing of data: you can store the data in either ASCII or UNICODE but if
you need to access the data in HP-UX (e.g. &HOLD& file), you need to store
it in ASCII (with relevant file map table)
- Command like LEN will return the number of characters instead number of
character that take up spaces. If an issue, then need to change to LENDP.
- Indexing: if you need to index multi-byte characters, your file mapping
must be NONE (no file mapping) , otherwise the index on the multi-byte
character field will be wrong.

In addition, certain UV commands might not behave as documented.
- RESIZE: will not work on file with NLS map.
- ACCOUNT.FILE.STATS: will not report the file stats correctly due to
additional line in command ANALYZE.FILE. Need to change program BP
ACCT.STAT.B to ignore the additional line.

My environment:

Unix VersionHP-UX B.11.11
Universe Version 9.6.1.6
SB+ Version3.4.0/7

My Question:

How 'international' is my environment? Our business is likely to roll out
to Eastern Europe, Russia perhaps and even places like Turkey and Isreal.
To my knowledge I think HP-UX can cope with the different characters used by
at least some of these countries, but what about Universe & SB+?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance,

RE: [U2] Universe running on Linux/SuSE

2005-10-14 Thread Anthony Dzikiewicz
We have been running for just over a year. We converted from DG/UX
(intel platform).

We went from intel to intel, so we didn't have the 'endian' issues. I
did recompile and catalog all code and recreate all indexes on our files
for safe keeping.

Printers were pretty much the same ol', same ol' we don't do anything
complicated so it was easy.

Cron is still cron. There was a bug in RHEL where cron had problems
with daylight savings time. This was a big problem for us, because all
of our nightly processing depends on cron. Im happy to say that it is
fixed.

Linux is just as stable as DG/UX. The only thing I can comment on is
that DG/UX did not change and it was rare to get updates. Linux is
updating all the time. So in that respect, I guess you have more
opportunity to make thing unstable. Don't update unless you have to.

We are running 10.1.1 and the only issue Im affected by is that you can
no longer do a MASTER OFF ALL - it doesn't work.

We have a finance system with around 200 users running Universe 9.6 on
Sun Solaris OS 8. For various reasons, we are considering moving to a
Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SuSE Enterprise Linux environment. The
Universe/Linux OS release combinations we are initially considering are
as follows:

Universe 10.1.1 with RHEL V3
Universe 10.1.12 with SuSE EL

Just wondering how many of you have gone through similar Unix to Linux
OS changes? What issues should we be aware of prior to this change? More
specifically:

- Are there issues when converting Universe data files from Unix/Solaris
OS to Linux?
- Is there difficulty getting printers to function properly on Linux?
- Are changes required to any scripts and/or cron daemons running
scripts on Linux?
- Has Linux proven to be more or less stable than Unix?
- Has anyone had success running the Universe/Linux combinations listed
above or had success running other combinations?
- Any major issues with Universe 10.1.1/10.1.12?

I apologize in advance if my questions are a bit too broad. I am simply
interested in gaining basic knowledge on the feasibility of running
Universe on Linux, and any pitfalls to be aware of. Any information
provided will prove valuable as we continue our discussions on a
possible move from Unix to Linux.

As someone else mentioned for unix you need to 'acquire' 3rd party software

Check out their website at www.easysoft.com, their inexpensive especially
compared to certain other 3rd parties.

It's easy to install and setup. Contact me off list if you have any questions.

We're on HP-UX. At the moment I'm reading from Sybase with their JDBC

driver then using UniObjects for Java to write records into UniData.
It's working fine, but it would be
*really* nice to connect directly to Sybase from a UniBasic program.

One thing you might want to do is use
RAISE(TRANS('filename',field, field,'X')) The reason for this is that
when you use a file translate in an I-Descriptor, it drops fields to
multi-values, multi-value to sub-values etc...

I'm trying to make an i-descriptor that does the following: From a
multi-valued field, TRANS to another multi-valued field in a second
file,
and return just the first subvalue of that field for each record pointed
to
by the second field.

In the FILE1, I have a multi-valued field that is a list of pointers to
the
FILE2. And in that file is a multi-valued list of IDs. I only want the

first one of those. So that instead of a list that looks like:

FILE1 IDFILE2 IDS IDS
1234557 12345 0123456
 0748923
 13467 0003456
 13578 0034569
 0143434

I would have a list that looks like:

FILE1 IDFILE2 IDS IDS
1234557 12345 0123456
 13467 0003456
 13578 0034569

I've read the entire chaper on virtual fields in the "Using Unidata"
manual, but nothing I've tried (FIELD, SUBR('-FIELDS'), EXTRACT among
other
things) has worked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

RE: [U2] connection from UniBasic to a SQL database

2005-10-14 Thread Peter Gonzalez
Hello Bob. I would like to see a sample of how you do that. You don't
have to give away your source, but giving us an ideal of how it works.

thanks.

It works fine and the only problems we had was with the ODBC driver

things are not this simle on unix - 3rd party odbc drivers need to be

I have never worked with a client who has gone this route, it never

I've written stuff to read from a SQL database into UniBasic using the
BCI.
There's no conceptual difference between reading & writing, it's just a
matter of using a SQL INSERT or MODIFY instead of a SELECT in the string
passed to SQL. I do have some doubts about how to set up transactions
to allow simultaneous SQL & UV updates, but that's functionality we
don't need yet.

The BCI documentation is sparse and the example code execrable, but it
does work and performance is not too bad, either.

UV 10.0.15 to MS SQL Server 2000, all on Windows, using the MS SQL
Server driver.

[U2] [UD] UniQuery virtual field question

2005-10-14 Thread Kathy Tymoczko
I'm trying to make an i-descriptor that does the following: From a
multi-valued field, TRANS to another multi-valued field in a second file,
and return just the first subvalue of that field for each record pointed to
by the second field.

In the FILE1, I have a multi-valued field that is a list of pointers to the
FILE2. And in that file is a multi-valued list of IDs. I only want the
first one of those. So that instead of a list that looks like:

FILE1 IDFILE2 IDS IDS
1234557 12345 0123456
 0748923
 13467 0003456
 13578 0034569
 0143434

I would have a list that looks like:

FILE1 IDFILE2 IDS IDS
1234557 12345 0123456
 13467 0003456
 13578 0034569

I've read the entire chaper on virtual fields in the "Using Unidata"
manual, but nothing I've tried (FIELD, SUBR('-FIELDS'), EXTRACT among other
things) has worked.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

MySql is easy - i understand it is perhaps not as easy if you are
talking MS sql and your U2 is on unix - as said above third party
drivers are required or an odbc bridge !

Re: [U2] [AD] What are you using to develop your web pages? JavaScript? PHP? .Net?

2005-10-14 Thread Symeon Breen
Hi unidata 6 and now 7 on linux - if you have a unix odbc driver then
it should be fairly easy. If there is only a windows one available
then you can use an odbc bridge (i think easysoft or similar do one) -
it is basicaly a unix odbc driver that attaches to a windows server
end then onto a windows odbc.

RE: [U2] UniOleDB - Delphi

2005-10-14 Thread Brian Leach
Claus,

If you have set up your config file correctly (looks ok, did you use the
horrible UCI Config editor to make sure it is saved in the right place ?)
your connection string should just read:

"Provider=IBM.UniOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;Data
Source=TESTFAMIS;Password={your_password_here}"

To test this outside of Delphi, try the following bit of VBScript

(open notepad, paste in and save as test.vbs. That extension should be
associated with WSCRIPT.EXE ...)

Dim dbConn
Dim dbCmd
Dim dbRS

Set dbConn = CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
dbConn.ConnectionString="Provider=IBM.UniOLEDB.1;Persist Security
Info=False;Data Source=TESTFAMIS;Password={your_password_here}"
dbConn.Open

Set dbCmd = CreateObject("ADODB.Command")
Set dbCmd.ActiveConnection = dbConn
dbCmd.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM {your_test_table_here}"
Set dbRS = dbCmd.Execute

dbRS.MoveFirst
Msgbox dbRS.Fields(1)

Not the best VBScript in the world but it should fall over quickly if there
are errors

[U2] UniOleDB - Delphi

2005-10-14 Thread Claus Derlien
Hi,

I'm trying to make a connection from Delphi with UniOleDB to our UniVerse
database, but i am stucked with not being able to connect..

Here is what i have done :

1) Via HS.ADMIN as root made the account visible to UniOleDB, also ran
HS.SCRUB on a few files so i had
something to work with, no problems

2) UniDK kit was already installed, so i edited the uci.config file so now
it looks like this :

[ODBC DATA SOURCES]

DBMSTYPE = UNIVERSE
account = /data1/FAMIS
host = 10.9.200.20
network = TCP/IP
service = uvserver
username = CD

I have removed the section with UniData as we only run UniVerse
the above section 'TESTFAMIS' is build by following the 'Using
UniOLEDB' manual

3. Next i made a DELPHI6 project with an empty form and dropped an ADO
connection component
using the connection string builder i made this conn. string :

  Provider=IBM.UniOLEDB.1;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=CD;
Data Source=TESTFAMIS;Location=FAMIS;Mode=ReadWrite

No matter what i have tried i get the same error string in return when trying
to connect :

   Died UCI::SQLConnect() with SQLSTATE IM976, Native error:0 [IBM][SQL
CLient]UCI connections to
non UniVerse databases is not allowed..

I guess there is a bond between the uci.config file and the connection string,
but i havent figured it out yet.

Can anyone show me the right path ?

best regards from Denmark

My environment:

Unix VersionHP-UX B.11.11

My Question:

How 'international' is my environment? Our business is likely to roll
out to Eastern Europe, Russia perhaps and even places like Turkey and
Isreal. To my knowledge I think HP-UX can cope with the different
characters used by at least some of these countries, but what about
Universe & SB+?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance,

RE: [U2] Printer problems on UV PE under Windows XP

2005-10-14 Thread Brian Leach
Eric,

A couple more points:

1. You can specify a share name to SETPTR so long as the printer has been
locally added to the system. The share name cannot contain spaces.

2. SOME printers will work if you use a generic/text only driver and install
them locally, however ...

3. You may need to specify GDI mode. Not all printers will work with a
generic/text only driver. One of mine ( a Konica Minolta colour laser) only
works in GDI using the correct Konica drivers.

i.e.

SETPTR AT \\myserver\KONICA,GDI

Where KONICA is the share name on myserver.

Rob,

As a comment, at my last company all our development was (and as far as I am
aware still is) done using UniVerse on Linux. This was a combination we used
for over 10 years. Stable certainly.

SV: [U2] Universe running on Linux/SuSE

2005-10-14 Thread Claus Derlien
We have been running Uv 10.1.0 for just about 2 years now on RH 8.0
uptime on our production machine is 261 days, and last downtime was only to
insert another scsi controller to external backup.

We came from a Digital Alpha running Thru64 4.0e so no fnuxi was needed on the
files..

We have attached about 15 printers, some of them cant have different logical
units, so i had stair stepping
problems on them, but was able to solve it by modifying the jobs on the spooler.

No real problems have been experienced, even our cron file ran unmodified...

I did spend some time to setup ssh, and to change a few perl scripts to support
the new environment
but with CPAN it's a matter of minutes to get your perl inst. up to speed :-)

I have tried the same setup on fedora 4, gentoo, debian 3.1 testing, centos
(rhes 3 without the redhat).
if you check required glibc/libc on IBM's website against the linux you plan to
run on and you have same or higher version then you should have no problems...
Universe does not require a certain distro, all that is needed is a minimum
version of glibc/libc

There is a small difference between the way redhat/suse systems handle the
uv.rc script
suse does everything according to the unix way, whereas the redhat dudes had no
clues about unix when they started, so they adopted their own standard, but if
you choose redhat, then the inst. script is made for redhat

best regards from a happy linux user

Emne: [U2] Universe running on Linux/SuSE

We have a finance system with around 200 users running Universe 9.6 on
Sun Solaris OS 8. For various reasons, we are considering moving to a
Red Hat Enterprise Linux or SuSE Enterprise Linux environment. The
Universe/Linux OS release combinations we are initially considering are
as follows:

Universe 10.1.1 with RHEL V3
Universe 10.1.12 with SuSE EL

Just wondering how many of you have gone through similar Unix to Linux
OS changes? What issues should we be aware of prior to this change? More
specifically:

- Are there issues when converting Universe data files from
Unix/Solaris OS to Linux?

Thank you in advance for your comments!

Wendy:

We talk to ms sql all the time thru OpenLink ODBC drivers using the BCI

It works fine and the only problems we had was with the ODBC driver

Have routines that do it if you'd like to look

things are not this simle on unix - 3rd party odbc drivers need to be purchased
, installed & configured.
I have never worked with a client who has gone this route, it never seems to be
worth the bother & expense.
