I don't know which point release of 6.1 you were on - but this was a change
in 6.1.7 (Unix only):

Issue 7427 - Problem Description

UniData -- After a PHANTOM process was invoked, entering Ctrl-C at the ECL
prompt in the session that invoked the PHANTOM caused the PHANTOM process to
stop. This has been fixed.

In the meanwhile (if you need to upgrade) try disabling CTRL-C in stty.

Subject: [U2] Phantom problem

 Hi all,
I am having a very strange problem in UNIDATA 6.1 (on AIX unix box)
Every thursday or monthend we run one process which generates a report.

The program is basically a phantom and runs at 9 PM. The steps to trigger
the phantoms are:

From a menu item, user selects the option. Then a Proc is called and
collects the data required by the phantom and then it kicks off the phantom.
The phantom SLEEPs upto 9PM and generates the report after that. Now the
problem is any other process (don't know) kills this phantom while it is
sleeping and no report is generated.

Is there any command (unix level/UNIDATA level) available through which I
can see which process is killing the phantom (or what is the problem with
the phantom).

The PH file tells that PHANTOM completed successfully without any error
logs in it. Is there any utility/commands/logs available which I can use for
further analysis?

Thanks.

RE: [U2] Phantom problem

2006-05-14 Thread John Jenkins
Oh yes - another change in UniData 7 in this area - I have put both below in
the thread to keep them together.

UniData 7.1.3

Issue 8597 - Problem Description

UniData -- Beginning at UniData 6.1.0, if a PHANTOM process was launched
from a udt session, and that udt session was closed improperly, such as
being killed from the shell level, the PHANTOM process terminated. Although
this problem may have occurred on any UNIX platform, it was most easily
observed on AIX, and has been fixed.

UniData 6.1.7

Issue 7427 - Problem Description

UniData -- After a PHANTOM process was invoked, entering Ctrl-C at the ECL
prompt in the session that invoked the PHANTOM caused the PHANTOM process to
stop. This has been fixed.

[U2] Trying to upgrading from Uv 9.6.2.5 to Uv 10.1.14

2006-05-14 Thread Denny Watkins
U2er's,

We are currently running Universe 9.6.2.5 on an IBM F50 running AIX 4.3.3.

I'm trying to upgrade from Universe 9.6.2.5 to Universe 10.1.14 from a CD.

I don't believe UV 9.6 had a definition for the CD drive or else it has been
deleted.

While trying to install from the command 'uv.load', I receive the following
dialog:

Shutting down uniVerse
DeadLock Daemon shutdown
uniVerse has been brought down.
Downloading from /cdrom to /uv

Now loading uniVerse from the install media...

A file or directory in the path name does not exist.
./uv.load[1255]: /cdrom/: 0403-016 Cannot find or open the file.
Unable to read installation media.
Contact your IBM support representative.

Does anyone have a DEVICE definiton for the cd rom drive (/dev/cd0)?
Or does anyone know of a alternative method for upgrading? ie copying
the files from the cd to an area on the machine and installing from there.
Perhaps a fix for the 'uv.load' script?

BTW: /mnt is mounted as follows:
/dev/cd0 609632 0 100% 152408 100% /mnt

Re: [U2] Trying to upgrading from Uv 9.6.2.5 to Uv 10.1.14

2006-05-14 Thread Allen Bell

Your cd is mounted on /mnt and you are trying to load from /cdrom.

When the install script runs it allows you to change the rewind and
norewind devices. Change these to /mnt or remount the cd through smit on
/cdrom and do as you are trying to do.

The install program does not use DEVICE at all.

 Mike,

You can do this, you just tweak the DOS verb to include an H in
 attribute 4 or 5.

Changed Attribute 4 from TICERGM to TICERGMH

And it _does_ work, even stays there when the UV transaction is rolled
back.

Now, I wonder if I can get the SysAdmins to make that change in
Production ...
;-)

 Thanks, Jim

That's brilliant ... Except it doesn't work in Transaction
State because you can't do a DOS /c ..., you get a 'Verb DOS
illegal
when a transaction is active' error. Darn, it would have been really
 useful otherwise.
 That's why we need a UV-supported method.

But actually, if you're on UV 10.1 you can use the new GCI function
UVRunCommand [see Issue Number 5616 in the Release Notes] even in
 transaction State.
Gee, another reason to upgrade! :-)

Well, for Windows platforms, you can do something like this
(this is from ECL, but with a tiny bit of code...):

  :! eventcreate /t information /id 999 /l System /so MyModule /d
   Error Test

  /t = ERROR | WARNING | INFORMATION
  /id = Event ID
  /l (lowercase L) = APPLICATION OR SYSTEM /so = SourceName
(any text, but most likely it's the offending program name)
  /d = Description

There are many other options (you can even specify a different
computer to send the event information to).

[U2] Unidata dbpause ( unix)

2006-05-14 Thread Steven Frost
Hi - I need a script to check if dbpause is on (using the dbpause_status
command)
I am trying to pipe the output through grep so I can tell the user in their
login profile
that the database is paused for certain reasons, and do they really really need
to login
The pipe doesn't seem to work , nor does redirection to a temporary file
Is there a way around this?
Thanks

you could maybe put a program in the LOGIN VOC that does an
EXECUTE 'dbpause_status' CAPTURING ...
And parse out the information you need?

Not quite so elegant, but...

Mike, that isn't a good idea. The VOC is written to a
number of times during login. If dbpause is on, these
writes will hang until it is off again.

I'd try two things:

1) Ignore the text output by dbpause_status, simply look at
the exit status after it is run. If anybody with a brain
coded it, the status will be different when dbpause is on
from when it is off.

dbpause_status
dbpause_stat=$?
echo $dbpause_stat
if [ $dbpause_stat -eq 0 ]
then
# maybe this means dbpause is off?
udt
else
# maybe this means it is on?
echo are you really sure?
fi

Sadly this isn't documented, so maybe nobody coded it that
way ...

2) See if the message output by dbpause_status is written to
stderr instead of stdout, so redirect both:

dbpause_text=$(dbpause_status 21)
if echo $dbpause_text | grep -iq on
then
echo $dbpause_text
echo are you really sure?
fi

HTH,

Cheers,

Ken
