RE: [U2] [UV] Editing Paired Value Marks - Victory

2008-08-14 Thread Mark Olarte
BTW, if you're using AE, you could also invoke the Editing Values
capability by typing EV on the line with the multivalues you wish to
edit.

1: Sales.Order.ID_1^253^253Sales.Order.ID_2^253Sales.Order.ID_3
EV return - This turns on the editing of values
P return- displays multivalues as if they were
attributes
1: Sales.Order.ID_1
2: - extra value
3: Sales.Order.ID_2
4: Sales.Order.ID_3

2 return- Select the second value to edit / delete
2:
D return- Delete the extra multivalue, 3rd moves up to
2nd
2: Sales.Order.ID_2
FI return - File the changes to the multivalues

Result -
1: Sales.Order.ID_1^253Sales.Order.ID_2^253Sales.Order.ID_3

This is something the UniData people have been able to do for a while.
To make things even more interesting, EVS invokes the editing of
subvalues.

RE: [U2] uniobjects

2008-08-14 Thread Hona, David S
What version of UniObjects are you using for .NET versus the VB6 client?
There is should only be one version and one instance of UniRPCD on the
server. IN theory you could have multiple versions - but that would be a
really *bad* idea.

You also have to be using the correct client for that version.
Otherwise, you may not connect or not reliably at least.

You manually start UniRPCD from UNIX: (amend for your path to your UV
home directory):

nohup /usr/ibm/unishared/unirpc/unirpcd

Best not to run it on the commnad line and redirect standard
input/output/error to a file.

does anyone know if its possible to run the uvrpc deamon (uniobjects)
from the command line? It appears that since we cannot find the problem
we are going to rewrite our order entry program in .net from vb6,
apparently from some initial testing that the .net version fo the
program works whereas the vb6 version is still having problems.

Also is anyone aware of any ways to see what a deamon (in particular
uvrpc) is doing? We have talked to IBM and apparently the best
suggestion we got from them was that the issue was being caused by the
network card in the systems (which have been the same for years) so I am
not even sure where that idea came from.

is anyone aware of any differences that would cause code written in .net
to work versus code written in vb6 (I assume they are using different
dll's anything on the server side)? Also does the uvrpc have different
daemons for .net and non .net?

thanks everyone

RE: [U2] can anyone shed any light on parts of this core file?

2008-08-14 Thread Symeon Breen
Sorry Doug no light to shed on the core, the problem with a core is that it
also dumps the constant lists of the code which is why you seem to get every
error under the sun in there.

However just to say I have had experience of strange errors in uniobjects in
the past on heavily used systems, this was because the network card was set
to 100/full duplex, and the switch port to auto negotiate, so they
negotiated to half duplex, we set the switch to full duplex and of course it
was faster, but we also lost the errors - may be something to investigate.

RE: [U2] TCL literal select

2008-08-14 Thread Israel, John R.
Or simply use a lower case LIST (i.e. list) to force it to ECLTYPE U for
that one statement. This works for list ..., select ..., etc. This is a
VERY useful way to use U flavored syntax in a P environment.

There is a similar command for compiling basic programs. Make the first line
of your code (even a subroutine):
$BASICTYPE P
or
$BASICTYPE U
to force it to compile in the desired mode.

RE: [U2] U2.NET v IBM.NET v UNIOBJECTS.NET

2008-08-14 Thread Brian Leach
Hi Susan

UniObjects.net is the .Net version of UniObjects (sic) - that exposes a the
native MultiValue features all nicely wrapped into classes. For details,
take a look at my primer 'Writing your First UniVerse Application' on the
U2UG site. That walks you through UniObjects.Net and VB.Net Express.

The other main option is the IBM ADO.NET provider, which exposes a
mainstream relational view of UniVerse, but with better handling for stored
procedures (AKA Basic subroutines) than some previous APIs. For details,
take a look at my article in a recent Spectrum (can't remember which one).

If I'm right in my nomenclature, U2.NET is a version of Blufinity's mv.Net
provider that has been bought by IBM, and that's a totally different kettle
of fish.. It's the work of one David Cooper who previously wrote the
TransVerse APIs for cross-database operations and is a chap who knows his
onions. I'll be reviewing the latest version of that later on in the year...

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but UniVerse has been stopped (i.e.
completely shut down) when you took that tar? Remember that type 30 files
keep their header information in shared memory until UniVerse is closed

be unreliable.

Subject: [U2] TCL literal select

Hi,

I work with a Unidata/Dataflo system on HPUX.
I am having trouble selecting records in my PARTS file.

I want to select all parts that have a in the description field (F1).
People have been using instead of INCH.
This causes problems for me during processing some reports and exports.

I have tried quite a few select statements with no success.

LIST PARTS WITH F1 = [//]
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = //
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = /''/
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = ['']
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = ''
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = /''/
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = \[]\
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = [\\]
LIST PARTS WITH F1 = ''

Wildcards on my system are brackets, [ leading and ] following

Any ideas on what would work?
Somebody showed me once, so I know it can be done.
I lost my notes though.

Thanks,

Bruce Ordway

RE: [U2] tape backups

2008-08-14 Thread Edward Brown
There's a dbpause / dbresume command on unidata that looks like it
would make backups safer:

dbpause is a UniData system-level command that blocks most updates to
the database made in a UniData session. Any updates made from the
operating system level are not blocked. You can use this feature to
perform some tasks that normally require UniData to be stopped, such as
backing up your data.
When the dbpause command is issued, all current writes and transactions
complete before
UniData pauses. Updates are blocked until the system administrator
executes the dbresume command.

However just to say I have had experience of strange errors in uniobjects in

to 100/full duplex, and the switch port to auto negotiate, so they
negotiated to half duplex, we set the switch to full duplex and of course it

Thanks for the suggestion, one question though did you notice any kind

RE: [U2] tape backups

2008-08-14 Thread Colin Alfke
We used these for years. No problems - except the tape loader itself... They
work well especially if you have a fast disk sub-system.

It's more the software that you are using and how it handles open files and
locking them. It's been too long since I've set one of these up on Aix but
in Windows some software won't backup open files (which the database may
hold open even if no one is actively using them). The other problem is
the backup software locks the file at the OS level so the database can't
read the file and the program aborts.

Roger,

It is very suspicious that the file size 1,073,741,312 is 512 bytes less
than 1 GB (1,073,741,824). I would look at ulimit on the new machine
- perhaps ulimit is set to 1 GB or some other size limiting factor
caused the file to be truncated during the move.

Hope this helps!

There's a dbpause / dbresume command on unidata that looks like it
 would make backups safer.

If your system supports filesystem snapshots, a really effective means is to:

1) dbpause the database
2) take file system snapshot of database
3) dsresume the database
4) perform tape backup from snapshot
5) release the snapshot once backup completes

This typically results in very little downtime (as long as it takes to pefrom
a snapshot of the filesystem) often 5-10 seconds or less. Yes, you should
wait a few seconds after dbpause to allow any pending writes to complete.

dbpause is a UniData system-level command that blocks most updates to
the database made in a UniData session. Any updates made from the
operating system level are not blocked. You can use this feature to

Roger,

First of all, that doesn't look like a type 30 file to me.

1,048,576 -rw-rw-rw- root sys 1,073,741,312 (same as the fsize).

That's a file - at version 10 a type 30 file is a directory at the OS
level, so I would expect to see something like drwxrwxrwx for the
permissions, and inside the directory there should be a DATA.30 and an
OVER.30 file.

Next, if uvfixfile won't touch it, what is the output from fixtool?

HTH.

[U2] Unidata to Universe port

2008-08-14 Thread Eugene St. Clair
Hello:

Does any one have any experiences they would be willing to share regarding the
effort required to port applications from UniData to Universe? We're currently
on Unidata 7.1 We developed our application in an early version of SB+ and
UniBasic and have kept current on SB+, so we're now at version 5.4. We've also
made use of various connectivity technolgies over time, such as ODBC, OLEDB,
and UniObjects. We haven't used the web services or ADO provider yet, but
probably will eventually. We are currently running on Windows but a Unix
flavor is not out of the question if there is a compelling reason.

At this point, I'm just trying to figure out a way to gauge the relative
effort, and if there were any surprises, such as better/worse performance,
costs, development effort, etc and of course, any gotchas. Also, is it
feasible to to code the application in a way that it would work on either
platform from the same code base?

The reason we're even considering this is because of IBM's decision not to
implement NLS in UniData, at least not right away. Of course, we've had
conversations with IBM about converting, but would appreciate hearing from any
one who has actually done this.

thanks in advance.

1.The structure of dictionary items is completely different.
