[u2u] New Listserver

2009-05-30 Thread Larry Hiscock
Hi all,

The lists hosted by U2UG have been moved to a new server, and upgraded from
majordomo to mailman. There will be a few changes in the administrative
side of things (subscription management, etc), but the email address for the
lists will remain the same.

One not insignificant (but not really major) change is that mailman handles
digests differently from majordomo. With majordomo there were 2 separate
lists for each list -- a regular list and a digest list. Some folks were
subscribed to BOTH the regular and digest lists. With mailman, this is no
longer possible, since mailman only keeps a single list, and manages the
digest based on user-selectable options. So anyone who was subscribed to a
digest list and the corresponding regular list is now only subscribed to a
single list, with the digest option turned on. Any user can now login and
change their options from regular to digest for any of the lists to which
they're subscribed.

One other change is that administrative requests (subscribe, unsubscribe,
etc) that are sent via email will no longer be sent to
"majord...@listserver.u2ug.org", but to "listname-...@listserver.u2ug.org"
where "listname" is one of the lists (i.e. u2-users, u2-community, etc), and
"xxx" is one of several commands, such as join, leave, subscribe,
unsubscribe, request, etc. For example, to subscribe to u2-users, send an
email to "u2-users-j...@listserver.u2ug.org" (or
"u2-users-subscr...@listserver.u2ug.org").

There will still be a web-based interface to the lists as well, but the url
for that will change slightly as well. The new location will be
http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo for general information, and a
list of all of the mailing lists, or
http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/listname for list specific
information and subscription management. http://listserver.u2ug.org
redirects to the general listinfo page.

The IP address was just changed to point to the new server last night, so it
may be a day or so before the DNS servers around the globe are all fully
updated.

Please be patient as we work through these changes. We will work to correct
any issues that arise as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

Larry Hiscock

[U2] unidata hangs

2009-05-30 Thread Symeon Breen
Why why why do all unidata processes hang when a mount point dies - even if
the mountpoint is not being used by any udt process ???

This drives me potty - it has happened again today where a mount for some
data sharing went down because the other machine had a network problem. This
mount was not used by any udt process just used at linux to copy some files
etc. Every udt process, telnet sessions, phantoms, uniobjects processes then
hangs. I have had to unmount the offending mount and stop and start unidata
killing off all sorts of things !

Is there a way to stop this happening ? a different type of mount, a udt
param, a udt upgrade (we are on 7.1)

Cheers

Symeon.

[U2] Blogs on GUI development

2009-05-30 Thread Tony G
I've recently written two blogs which go into some detail about
the options available to developers who want to put a GUI on
their MV app. These are more oriented toward people who don't
really understand the various mainstream buzzwords or how some of
the more popular options compare to one another. The emphasis is
on the idea that no matter what you choose, you will have a
learning curve, but it helps to understand that your education
won't be completely wasted should you learn about one option and
then move to another. There are consistent paradigms in use, and
sometimes just understanding that is helpful in making
comparisons and choices.

If you are familiar with the options, including those that make
use of JavaScript and Ajax, or the various plugin tools like Flex
and Silverlight, then your feedback is most welcome, but please
remember the intended audience when going into detail.

The best place to start is probably the main page:
remove.this.spam.filterNebula-RnD.com/blog/

Look down the page for articles:
"Still on a fence about GUI?"
then "Web GUI tools - Not as different as they seem"

There is also a more detailed article titled "Adobe Flex for MV
GUI" if you wish to know more about that option.

As stated in my recent entry "About this blog, taking a brief
step back", I'm happy to accept comments and criticisms, so
please let me know what else you'd like to see written up.

Yes, I sell tools for which I have a bias, but for those of you
concerned about ads I hope you will find my blogs are almost
entirely non biased when I'm explaining options. I leave it to
the reader to come to their own conclusions, and if their
conclusions agree with mine then I will be ready to offer
products and services to help with implementation. If not then
I'm at least glad to have helped someone with their decision
process.

Finally, my blog home page has sidebar links to other MV-related
blogs (and a couple that are not). I welcome you to visit these
repositories of (arguable?) insight and to let me know if there
are other MV blogs that should be added to the list. Blogs are
homes to indepth notes that usually don't belong in forum
discussions, and you often won't find the information or
(arguably?) helpful perspectives anywhere else. As an example,
my recent blog notes on web development relate closely to Brian
Leaches recent blog on mvScript - you simply won't find this
information anywhere else.

Thanks for your time,

Re: [U2] unidata hangs

2009-05-30 Thread Wally Terhune
From the 7.1.15 readme:
Issue 9809 - Problem Description

UniData -- UniData maintains a table in shared memory that records
information about your system's file systems and the available
space in each file system. This table is used to quickly determine
if a dynamic file has room to expand in its current directory or
if a new part file needs to be created in another file system. The
table is loaded when the database starts and is refreshed regularly
by the smm daemon.

Prior to this release, the smm daemon created entries in this table
by forking the UNIX 'df' command. As smm relied on the specific
format produced by the standard OS-provided df command, if an
administrator replaced the standard 'df' command with a different
df utility, smm was unable to properly parse the df output and
create proper entries in the shared memory table. This could
result in the inability to create or expand UniData dynamic files.

This table can be viewed with the '$UDTBIN/sms -F' command. Here is
an example of the normal, expected output:

# $UDTBIN/sms -F
File system table size (N_FILESYS):200, Used: 13

Device ID Available Space NFS File System Name
   (in 512 Bytes)
  1073741827 621296 no /
  1073741825 755264 no /stand
  1073741833 1209600 no /var
  1073741834 1736512 no /usr
  1073807361 91514582 no /tshp1123
  1073741832 1002224 no /tmp
  1073741831 1027440 no /opt
  1073741830 1320720 no /home
  1073741829 9326052 no /disk2
  1073741828 2599142 no /disk1

Starting with this release, smm no longer forks df to create the
entries in this table. Instead, smm reads the platform-appropriate
mount table to create the file system entries in this table. As
smm does not fork a df command, any problem with the output format
of a non-standard df command is avoided.

In order to provide compatibility with prior releases, a new
parameter is created in udtconfig: USE_DF. The default setting
for this parameter is: USE_DF=0. This means 'use the new method of
loading the shared memory table by reading the mount table'. If
an administrator prefers to have smm continue to fork df (as in
prior releases), they can set udtconfig USE_DF=1. UniData daemons
must be stopped and restarted to implement any change to the
USE_DF setting.

NOTE: There have been a number of other problems associated with
smm forking df, including: smm core dumping; defunct df processes
spawned by smm. Most of these problems were triggered by the
behavior of 'df' when nfs-mounted files systems became unavailable
to the system. As smm no longer forks df, these problems should
no longer occur at this release.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Customers have sometimes experienced a problem
with a udt process hanging during initialization when an nfs
mounted partition was unavailable (network or system down). This
behavior may not be completely resolved by the fix for this issue.
This hang was due to smm not responding to the login request from
the udt process - typically because it was hung itself, waiting for
a df process to complete. Even though we now avoid forking df, smm
still re-calculates the space available in each file system every
60 seconds (by default). smm uses a standard UNIX statfs() system
call to determine the space available on a file system. If smm is
checking an nfs file system that is unavailable, that system call
may still hang. The behavior of this varies by UNIX flavor. If
you mount nfs file systems as a HARD mount, this system call may
hang until that remote system becomes available again. smm will
wait on that system call as well. IBM recommends that you consider
using SOFT nfs mounts. There is typically a configurable number of
retries that will be attempted before the system call returns
with a failure status. This allows smm to continue after a brief
pause, waiting for statfs() to return. Please consult your UNIX
support provider for specific information about NFS SOFT mounts
for your platform.

Re: [U2] [u2u] UV on Windows question

2009-05-30 Thread Dave Taylor
The most significant difference between UV/nix and UV/doz in our experience is
that UV/doz does not have any print spooler whatsoever.

Each print job goes directly to the Windows spooler and then to the associated
Windows printer.

Our SpoolerPlus software product provides both a print spooler for
Universe and the functions and commands necessary to emulate the generic Pick
print spooler on UV/doz, UV/nix, UD/doz, UD/nix, QM/doz and QM/nix.

SpoolerPlus solves the problem of the missing spooler on UV/doz and provides a
much richer print spooler architecture than that provided by the native UV, UD
and QM databases (IMHO)

That said, my sense is that it is much easier to create printers in UV/doz than
it is in UV/nix.

Please feel free to contact me directly for a more detailed discussion if you
wish.
