Re: [U2] Unidata on Virtualized Server

2010-01-31 Thread Doug
Kevin,

We have been running Unidata and Universe on a Windows 2008 virtual server
for almost a year. You will need lots of memory and a new processor to
handle the virtualization. The installation of Unidata and Universe was a
breeze. As a matter of fact we crashed our virtual servers, not
intentionally, today. We had all of them up and running in a few minutes.

Doug

Is anyone running Unidata (+ SB+) on a virtualized server, i.e. VMWare? If
so, what considerations and concerns are there in this environment that are
different from a dedicated Unidata server?

(Yes, I searched the archive and didn't find anything that recent, so my
apologies for asking a question that has been asked before.)

Re: [U2] Unidata on Virtualized Server

2010-01-31 Thread Tony Gravagno
 From: George R Smith
I told my sales rep that over a week ago - seems
strange doesn't it that the suggestion has to come
 from the field.

 From: Brutzman, Bill
In my little world of fantasy... it would be great if
Rocket Software would... partner with a hosting
company... or otherwise... work make U2
 cloud-available.

IBM had always treated U2 as the ugly stepchildren. They made a
big splash over making DB2 and other software available in
virtualized servers but there wasn't a word about such things for
U2, even though it could be done easily. Maybe Rocket will do
better.

Installing Unidata or Universe on a virtual server is exactly the
same as over any piece of non-virtualized hardware. I've blogged
about my environment a few times: On my blog main page enter
'application virtualization vmware' in the search box and press
Enter. I run eight MV databases plus SQL Server, MySQL and
others, plus web server and other apps, all in the same virtual
environment, with just 1GB of memory allocated. I wouldn't
recommend this configuration for an end-user but for a
development system it works great.

If Rocket would authorize it, anyone could create a U2 Virtual
Appliance for prospects and students to download. Get people
using the platform without the pain of installing it. Create
remote interfaces with a GUI and people don't even need to know
they're running against a non-RDBMS platform.

If Rocket would authorize it, anyone could install U2 in an
Amazon EC2 server instance, then boot as many environments as
required to support turnkey applications for short-term or
long-term use. In this environment, store the data in Amazon S3
and charge for processor time and disk storage. Only charge
people for what they use, not per seat / per user licenses.
How tough is that?

It's all technically possible right now. The only thing that
stops us from using this fine technology in the modern world are
the visionless bureaucrats who provide it.

[U2] Predicting application performance

2010-01-31 Thread bradley . schrag
I haven't found anything in the archives and I don't remember seeing this
specific question addressed by the group. Please forgive if this has
already been discussed.

This is a mystery upon which I'm hoping this list can shed some light.
I'll sit and watch nmon display CPU stats and see *tons* of waits but the
end users experience no slowdowns. At other times nmon may show waits more
in the 30% - 40% range and users start complaining about bad response
times. We've tried watching I/O and memory/paging space also and don't see
any discernible patterns.

Does anyone have thoughts on how to predict UD app performance based on
CPU, I/O or other system stats?

[U2] UODOT.NET and performance counter errors on Windows 2003

2010-01-31 Thread Jacques G.
Hello,

When deploying web services which use UODOTNET.DLL on a Windows 2003
environment, I frequently encounter security errors pertaining to performance
counters. I never have these errors when deploying on XP machines. Anyone
here have a procedure that gets rid of that error every time ?

So far I've added the ASPNET user to the administrator list so that he can
create the performance counters. I've also increased the trust level of the
UODOTNET.DLL assembly. Any ideas of what else I can change ?

I'm using Framework 2.0.[something]

This is a long shot, but we had a similar problem on hpux 10. Our
problem was a little different, it only impacted certain users, not
everyone. For certain users, who -m would report either multiple
lines or no lines. The problem was in the utmp file, where the user
would have more than one open line. The solution that we got from HP
was to get everyone off the system and null out the system accounting
files.

Like I said, it's a long shot, but it might help. If nothing else, it
would rule out a problem with the utmp file. (I don't know what HP uses
these days, but it's not called utmp anymore, either utmpx or utmps.)

You may provide feedback (

HP-UX 11.23 ssh: who(1) -m option fails to display as expected
PROBLEM
With HPUX 11.23 a who -Rm added to .profile fails
to display as expected. For example, from the debug:

 + + who -Rm
 + cut -d: -f1
 + sed -n s/^.*(\(.*\))$/\1/p
 DISPLAY=:0.0

CONFIGURATION
Operating System - HP-UX
Version - 11.23
Subsystem - ssh A.03.x

RESOLUTION
This problem has been identified as a timing issue in
multiple versions of ssh A.03.x on HP-UX 11.23 and has
been isolated to the -m option. Other versions of HP-UX
appear to be unaffected. A fix is planned.

The addition of a sleep(1) command has been found to
work around this issue. For example:

 sleep 6
 who -Rm

ssh
who -Rm

[U2] Indexed file info

2010-01-31 Thread John Rodgers
We have a large ERP system on UniVerse 9.6 on HP-UX.

We have thousands of files - many of which are distributed and / or indexed.

I am trying to work out how to get an overview of the indices on all the
files.

I would like to get a summary of which fields are indexed on each file.

Distributed files are allowed to have different indices on each part-file.

That (for us) is unusual but possible. I want to make sure they do not get
out of step.

Ideally I want to I want to view a listing of all the indexed files with
the indexed file paths and the individual field details.

The LIST.INDEX works on one file only.

Just identifying the files with an index is not straightforward as it
involves opening every file and checking the STATUS attributes.

That does not give any insight into the indexed fields of each file.

Any suggestions as to the best way of achieving this?

I am thinking that I need to get the files from the I_filename directories
in the account home directory and the parse the details from the MAP files.

Is there an easier way?

Cheers

Re: [U2] Unidata on Virtualized Server

2010-01-31 Thread Raymond P. de Bourbon
Last time I checked, the official stance from what was then IBM is that
virtual environments other than VMWare were not supported, and even
then, any DB issues that you ran into while running under VMWare would
need to be fully replicated in a physical environment before support
would be provided. As a result we took a policy of not supporting
virtual for any of our end-users, and strongly pushed them all to remain
on physical.

In most cases where they still went ahead and installed on virtual, all
appeared to be fine initially and would run perfectly fine for a
period of a few months before performance would degrade over time to the
point where the our clients complained it was unacceptable, at which
point we would get them to switch back to physical.

Having said all that, when configured properly, it *does* work.. The key
points to follow will be the same as virtualizing something like
Exchange/SQL Server where your IO requirements need special
consideration. Stay away from dynamic virtual disks, use pass-through
disks or iSCSI targets if possible, or worst case use a fixed/static
disk image for the best IO performance. File sizing and fragmentation
can leave you dead in the water so be sure to have processes to monitor
these and keep everything as optimal as possible. I personally found a
number of IO performance bottlenecks in our application while
troubleshooting virtual servers with tools like Sysinternals Filemon,
where seeking IO within files is quite obvious due to the repeated
access to the same file but at sequential addresses.. Once we got a
handle on the file sizing, and some of the code was cleaned up,
performance was reasonable, and has remained as such for more than the
normal few months...

As an aside, with SB+ on virtual, we found a major bottleneck with the
way the TUXFER.DATA.% port files are created/cleared on use. For some
reason in a virtual environment, the CLEAR-FILE on a static UDT file can
take a considerable time to complete, so transfers to Excel would pause
for a significant time before initiating. We solved this by pre-creating
a fixed number of TUXFER.DATA.% files (250 in our case) as dynamic
files.. This not only solved owner and general windows permission issues
(Error 202 etc) but meant that the clear down was near instantaneous for
the SB processing..

FYI all of this was with UniData on Windows, I suspect UniData on Linux
in virtual would be considerably better due to how shared memory works
under Linux as compared to Windows...

Is anyone running Unidata (+ SB+) on a virtualized server, i.e. VMWare?
If
so, what considerations and concerns are there in this environment that
are

(Yes, I searched the archive and didn't find anything that recent, so my

Re: [U2] Dynamic Connect (Wintegrate) 6.1.0 and Vista; Error Pasting Text

2010-01-31 Thread Gregor Scott
We found it early on in our testing of wInteg 6.1.3. Vista and Windows 7
clients have the behaviour - XP does not. Something to do with the Aero
functions in Vista/7.

It took a while to be able to provide U2 support with a reproducible
scenario, but we eventually succeeded in getting an engineering case opened
to deal with it.
I'm hoping the wIntegrate 6.2 version going into beta soon will have a fix,
because it is a very frustrating phenomenon for developers here.

John,

You should look at the INDICES function it can be called either with just a
file variable or with a file variable and index name. The first form returns a
dynamic array of indices on the file and the second gives pretty much all the

Re: [U2] Predicting application performance

2010-01-31 Thread Dan Fitzgerald
Looking at runqueue in topas is often a good predictor.

Are you running nmon? I recommend that you do.

On thing to look at there is vmstat -v, and watch to see if the I/O's
blocked because of various buffers being unavailable increases day to day
(or even hour-to-hour).

The other thing in UD is to be sure that the SBCS shared memory segment is
large enough. As in Highlander, there can be only one. Well, there _should_
be only one, anyway. If you ever have more than one, it's too small. Perhaps
run for a day or so with a cron job that counts those every minute or so. If
you're right on the cusp, where you shmget another, then fall under the
threshold, releasing it, then rise gain to need another, you'll see the
system crawling to the point where you'll be typing in a field, and it won't
even echo until 15 seconds later, when all of a sudden dozens of characters
will appear.

You may also want to capture user counts throughout the day; that would be a
strong hint about memory configuration. I forget: at 7.1, can you run in
64-bit? In 32-bit UD, there's some memory addressing constraints, as I
recall.

There is also an OS command fileview that can really work some
