iphanotm processes, I believe, stand for interactive phantoms. Therefore,

[U2] [UD] LISTUSER output: phantom vs. iphantm

2012-09-13 Thread Dean.Armbruster
What is the difference between LISTUSER USRTYPEs "phantom" and "iphantm"?

On our systems, we will have 100 to 200 phantom processes, i.e. background
processes, running at any given moment. When I look at them via LISTUSER, they
will be split approximately 60/40 between phantom and iphantm. All were
started using the PHANTOM verb.

I can't discern a difference, and I can't find anything about it in the 7.3
UniData documents. A search for "iphantm" has no hits.

This comes into play because it seems that SYSTEM(514) includes iphantm
sessions in the count, but not phantom sessions. We have a monitoring program
that warns us if the number of users approaches the configured license limit,
and it uses SYSTEM(514). We built in for it to allow for a configurable amount
of phantom processes. If phantom processes may or may not be included in
SYSTEM(514), our monitor program isn't as accurate as it could be.

It seems to me that neither phantom nor iphantm should be included in
SYSTEM(514). HELP for SYSTEM(514) states that it returns the number users
currently logged in and does not include phantoms. Presumably, this is the
number of licenses in use. Do iphantm sessions use a license?

[U2] XLr8Resizer focused release 3.5.10 [ad]

2012-09-13 Thread Doug Averch
U2logic is pleased to announce a new release of it XLr8Tools version
3.5.10. We have added multi-threading to the XLr8Resizer to speed up
analyze and resizing. Our XLr8Resizer will be priced until the end of the
month at $99.00 and then will be $149.00 per year per user. Our XLr8Editor
will be priced until the end of this month for $49.00 and then will be
$79.00 per year per user. We think we have added a lot of value to both
products and will continue to do so.

Just a side note we had trouble on our test system getting more than 39
users to be used without running out of memory on Eclipse or too many
threads for UniObjects for Java (UOJ) to handle simultaneously. We had to
slow up our Java code because UOJ cannot handle the management of that many
sessions with commands like ANALYZE.FILE and RESIZE on
Universe. Curiously, Unidata performed better with guide and memresize
maybe to the fact they are OS commands.

Here is our changed log for this release:

v3.5.10 - September 14, 2012

Bugzilla [Bug 464] - XLr8Resizer can use all of the connections you want
simultaneously for resizing

   1) Added preference color choice for when Analyze.File fails

   2) Added preference for connection time attempts

   3) Added preference for max attempts to connect

2012-09-13 Thread Dean.Armbruster
And the winner is:

PORT.STATUS

It is quick and easy. My program executes it using its own @USERNO and parses
it out. With no options, it returns instantly.

LISTUSER and listuser were too slow. It takes 20+ seconds for them to return
from an captured EXECUTE/PCPERFORM when it has to output our 6000+ sessions.
I'd probably grep the smm.log if I were writing a unix script or program.
Having a SYSTEM() call to get this is on the wish list.

Is there a way to programmatically determine the number of licensed users
allowed?

SYSTEM(514) reports the number of non-phantom users currently logged in, which
is essentially the number of licenses in use. I want to compare that against
the number of users allowed in a monitoring program. I want to know if we're
close to the limit before we run out. The number of licenses varies by server.

Colleagues have suggested using grep on udtconfig for NUSERS, but that is not
the same thing. Since we generally have 100-200 phantom processes, we
sometimes configure to a size larger than the license limit to have room for
those phantom processes.

I recently read a piece by Brian Stone that 'Q-pointer' meant 'Query-Pointer'.

It was part of a Pick history discussion I believe on Linked In. Sorry I don't
have the reference at hand now. I will see if I can track it down tonight.

Follow up from last week:

I contacted a former co-worker who has contacts with some of the folks that
worked with Dick Pick back in the original days. This guy said that when they
were brain storming about how to develop the original Pick database, they
talked about a way to point to things quickly, thus the "Q" in a Q-pointer
stands for Quick.

I would not stake my life on this answer, but this looks like the most accurate
answer so far.

Re: [U2] [UV] Nice gotcha

2012-09-13 Thread David A. Green
When I began working at Unidata one of the first things I tried was
:DELETE.FILE VOC and it of course did, things at TCL began to get really
weird, until it stopped working. I was of course on a test machine and had
a backup.

But when the UniQuery keyword TO first came out it would let you do things
like LIST CUSTOMERS NAME ADDRESS TO VOC. And without warning boom!

They have added some dummy proofing since those days.

IIRC, universe doesn't let you run *any* query commands, including
LIST-ITEM, on a file if there isn't a dict defined. So at some point
someone had edited the voc f-pointer for LISTU.HISTORY, and put VOC into
attribute 3? That's slightly dangerous. Good thing uv warns.
