Re: [U2] User cannot login

2013-03-12 Thread Tom Whitmore
Hi,
I had to support windows implementations a few years ago and our customers had
this problem regularly. Go into the GUI u2 admin tool. I haven't had to use
the new tool, but in the UniAdmin, you would go into Network Services/Telenet,
Click on the User tab. When you enter the domain and account they are case
sensitive, they need to be identical to how they are defined on the AD.

If you are interested, I have an old document I wrote for UniAdmin for our
customers.

Good luck!

Re: [U2] Using the PUT method in an HTTP connection in UniBasic

2013-03-12 Thread Jeff Schasny
I use Curl for this sort of stuff. I have a generic http/https send/get
routine you can get here:

http://www.schasny.com/bp/HTTP.TRANSFER

jim.sto...@esc.edu wrote:

Hello everyone,

We have been playing around with the UniBasic commands createRequest and
submitRequest for use with some web services provided by our external
vendors. Unfortunately, one of the web services requires updates to
existing data records to be submitted using the PUT method, instead of
POST. According to the UniBasic Commands Reference for both UniData 7.2
and 7.3, the PUT method appears to not be supported for the createRequest
command. That struck me as a little odd, so just to be sure, we tried it
and couldn't get it to work.

Does anyone know of an alternative way to create http requests in UniBasic
that would support the PUT method? We have UniData 7.2 running on HP-UX.
Most of my programming experience is on other platforms, typically on
Windows, so my normal solution to this problem would be to make use of
Microsoft's WinHTTP object (or one of its equivalent siblings) to handle
the http request. Is there a way to do something equivalent to that in
UniBasic on HP-UX?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can give me!

[U2] U2 Web DE Re-install

2013-03-12 Thread Israel, John R.
My PC dies a few weeks ago and I am trying to re-install the U2 Web DE package
on my PC so that I can connect to UniData Redback on my UNIX box. Note that
my web server running IIS is on yet a 3rd box.

My documentation is slim to none and I am hoping to get some guidance.

Everything is working fine on my UNIX box (RedBack and UniData) and all is good
on my web server. I just need to get U2WebDE running from my PC.

As I recall, when it asks if I want the Complete or Custom setup, I choose
Custom.
I am fine with the destination of C:\IBM\U2WEBDE
When it asks for which features, it defaults to 1) U2 Web Designer, 2) IIS
Gateway 3) International Licenses.
If I click Next, I get a window showing an empty box stating: 0 IIS web
sites are defined. Select one to use in this installation.

Obviously, I am missing something here.

If I backup to the features and also turn on the RedBack Object Server for
UniData, and click next, it wants to start a Database service on my PC, but
UniData is on a UNIX box.

Where am I going wrong?

Re: [U2] U2 Web DE Re-install

2013-03-12 Thread Brian Leach
Also, to set up the database side portion, you need to run WebDE developer,
connect to the account and use the option to enable the account from there.

Remember that unlike RedBack, there are no responders on the server. It is
all done from the web server running pooled UniObjects connections.

So you need to set up the new ini file (rgw5.ini) in place of the old
rgw.ini on the web server, with the min/max pools and the connection
credentials (encrypted password). Bad luck if that has an expiry policy.

Setting up the ini file also requires WebDE developer, though once created
you can copy the rgw5.ini around.

And after all of *that*, make sure you have installed .NET framework 4 on
the web server, and if you are using old ASP style pages, you need to
register the COM wrappers. Only supports the connection by name (the old

[U2] Replacements for Old SB?

2013-03-12 Thread Tony Gravagno
I'm still running across sites that have 1990's versions of
SystemBuilder on different DBMS platforms.

What's the latest wisdom on either migrating away from SB to another
cross-platform product, or the pain of migrating/upgrading to a
current UV/SB+ ?

I'm fully aware that DesignBais is very familiar looking to SB users
but there are no good conversion tools to get to that product.

I'm also aware of another product based in the UK that has excellent
tools for migrating From SB, but I don't like where they migrate To.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: [U2] Replacements for Old SB?

2013-03-12 Thread Brian Leach
Hi Tony

SB+ used to have (don't know if it does still) wrappers for the old SB
screens, but they are really different animals and from what I dimly recall
the wrapper never really flowed right - mixing models.

I used to have tools to take SB to uvCase - giving them an immediate Windows
GUI - and my current mvStudio product is mostly backward compatible with
uvCase (i.e. it's uvCase with multiple platforms and another 15 years'
lessons learned), so that might well be an option. I'd need to do some
digging, though - it's a while since I converted an oldtime SB system!

SB was never quite as adept at naval gazing as SB+, so it was in may ways a
cleaner conversion. The problem with getting anything out of SB+ is that it
constantly references itself and there is no separation between the logical
model and its implementation, so if you go beyond parsing out all the file
definitions and tools you just end up with another SB+. So an 80% conversion
is easy ..

Re: [U2] Replacements for Old SB?

2013-03-12 Thread Wjhonson
My thoughts are from the point of employment.
Of all the jobs posted over the past several years, several have asked for SB+
experience, none have asked for any other product of that class.

OK gurus, here's one for you:

Using SB 5.5, I make changes to my settings (like background color) and then
Save Configuration As... and give it a New Session Name under the Classic tab.

I can now see this as one of the available configurations the next time I log
in.

Where the heck is this saved? I haven't found any files in the C:\SBClient
folder that have today's date.

Thanks

I'll respond to that here because it dove-tails with what I have
below. You don't see ads, in-part, because the sites still running the
old software are largely not aware that an MV community exists that
might respond to such an ad. Many of them don't even know what
software they have running on their DOS system. Most of them that I
run across have no consultants (I dare say Value-Add Reseller) who
strongly insists on upgrades. The result is that they only reach out
to the world after a hard drive failure, hurricane, or some other
catastrophe. More below.

So an 80% conversion is easy ..

Yeah, everyone claims to do 80%, some only really do 50%. But we all
know it's that last 20% that occupies your time for the next year or
three. So perhaps to further refine the query, I'm looking for tools
that really do bring us closer to that 95-98% mark - with no marketing
fluff to bridge the gap between there and 80%.

I don't have any immediate opportunities but I keep stumbling on these
poor sites. And if I do, and picking up orphans isn't my business,
then you gotta know that people who do go after that business must be
finding more of these. Some of these sites have gone through
developers (aka snake-oil salesmen) who claim they're going to convert
the software but never do, and eventually the sites just migrate away
from MV. It's a terrible story.

[uh oh, soapbox alert]
You'd think the MV DBMS providers would take some interest in this but
I've yet to see any of them pro-actively offer assistance to any of
these sites, for-fee or otherwise. I know the original intent was to
discontinue support for SB and earlier SB+ in an effort to force
end-users to migrate to U2. That tactic worked for some sites but the
people who implemented that policy simply didn't have a plan-B for the
large number of sites that didn't fall for it. They were thinking
about starving out their DBMS competition by leveraging this tool.
What actually happened is that end-users decided not to upgrade their
DBMS just so they could keep using SB, and these sites migrate away
from the model as soon as some young nephew comes along. So everyone
loses with this predatory approach.

I'm not asking any company to maintain software when it's not in their
financial interest, nor to chase small sites that are more inclined to
drop support than to migrate to a new platform. But from a marketing
perspective we all lose when a policy like this is only
half-implemented.

Not sure what you mean by saying that discontinuing support for SB would make
people migrate to U2 ?

System Builder and U2 have been married since the days of Ardent.
Not all U2 sites use it, I would suggest no more than one third of all U2 sites
have ever user System Builder.

Maybe you meant that they wanted people to move to .NET and Uniobjects?

I'm guessing he meant the decision to stop supporting SB+ on top of D3. We
had already migrated most of our customer base to U2 by that point so it
didn't hurt us too badly, but even then it seemed like a cut off your nose
to spite your face type of decision

Prior to the SB/U2 marriage, SB wasn't as monogamous. SB and SB+
were supported on other MV platforms. Ardent or IBM decided that SB+
would not be supported for other databases. It was an obvious effort
to compel migrations to supported platforms, now only Universe and
Unidata, where end-users would also now be forced to pay for DBMS
licenses in addition to SB. Some end-users migrated from their
original DBMS just to keep SB, it wasn't any newfound appreciation for
U2. Many of these sites don't care about the DBMS at all, they just
use whatever their VAR sells them under the application. I'm talking
about the sites that had a choice and decided not to play.

Thanks I never knew that history. I've been fairly focused on [what is now
called] mvEnterprise, followed by Universe, MvBase, and then back to Universe.
So never got into the D3 stuff.

So if SB is not supported on D3, I wonder if there is a competing product that
runs on D3, *and* more importantly actually has a toe hold in the market.

Well, I didn't mention D3 in my original note because that's not the
only platform affected. mvBase is also affected. I dunno about
mvEnterprise. But yeah, let's face it, Ardent/IBM targeted PS/RD/TL
with a legitimate but fairly hostile competitive move, and yes all of
those platforms belong to TigerLogic.

As to competing product, I wouldn't really use that term. If you use a
product like SB that you can't get away from because your application
relies on it, then there is no competition as in alternatives of
choice, any more than chocolate is an alternative for someone with a
cocaine habit. That's why this was a fairly predatory tactic.

If one considers alternatives in the same class as SB+ for _new_
development, there are a bunch of them including DesignBais, Viságe,
ATGUI, and OpenInsight. Those are application development platforms.
Then there are connectivity tools with similar but varying degrees of
integration and GUI design, including FlashCONNECT, mv.NET, UO.NET,
and Coyote. All of these tools, and many others compete with SB+ in
an audience where people have more of a choice and limits on time and
cash.

My original point was that there's no clean path from old SB to
_anything_, including the current SB+. I can't easily recommend an old
site migrate to UV with SB+ now because the pain is about as bad as
going with other options.

The options I want to avoid presenting to any MV user is migration
away from the platform, or getting a completely new MV application.
There are plenty of people offering these solutions.

Ouch nasty. I once ran into a site using Chandru Murthi's UPDATE processor and
they wanted a quote on converting them to ... anything, since support didn't
really exist. It was quite painful. I mean after they'd paid x for that
system, then to have to essentially junk it completely five years later, to go
*back* to a generic-but-less-wonderful solution, or forward (five times the
price) to something similar but maintainable since I think Chandru probably
sold twelve of these

Maybe all the sites with SB on D3 (MvBase, MvEnterprise, or anything else)
should have banded together to form a new consortium and hired a few
programmers. Didn't there used to be SB conferences? Or is that my
imagination? But probably tied to IBM-now-Rocket too strongly.
