[U2] Mobile phones

2013-07-10 Thread Symeon Breen
Hi

I have an application that is based in the UK, one of the things it does is
allow entry of a phone number, I then determine if this is a mobile (cell
phone) and send a text (easy in the uk as all mobiles begin with 07)

We are embarking upon our first US client (well existing uk customer with a
US presence) so my question is - how with US phone numbers can I determine
if it is a cell phone ?

Thanks

Symeon.

Hi Symeon,

In our phone call billing system, based in Australia, we can't tell if a called
number in the US is a mobile. Perhaps someone in the US may have some way of
knowing. This web site gives a lot of information regarding the relevant
numbers per country.

Re: [U2] Mobile phones

2013-07-10 Thread Allen Egerton
Short answer is that you can't. At least not from the phone number.

Numbers here are broken down into aaa-bbb-; (aaa=area code;
bbb=exchange; =number). The area code tells you what state the phone
was/is issued in, the exchange gives you the general area, and the number is
simply sequential. There's no Service Class indicator.

My brother's cell phone was issued in Connecticut, has a 203 area code.
He's lived in California for almost a decade now. So, you can't even
reliably tell from his phone number what state he lives in. Connecticut's
on the East Coast of the USA, California's on the West Coast, we're about as
far apart as we can be and still live on the same continent.

2013-07-10 Thread Aaron Titus
Symeon, are you planning to send the sms message directly through a local
gateway at your company, or through a third party provider, or via email?
If the latter, in the US, all the carriers have different email gateways.
It sounds to me like you need to collect more information than just the
phone #. With other web sites I have used (like airline web sites for
example) they always ask you if a number is a mobile number, and which
carrier you are using.

I had good results with Clickatell.com for SMS gateway. Then someone used them
for spamming, and several of the carriers started rejecting shared short-codes.
I didn't want to take the expense of getting a unique short-code. Think you can
register a regular 10 digit as well. Da$# Spammers! Using them is a lot easier
than the carriers email gateway, and you can even check delivery. You can even
do 2 way. But there is a cost involved, though when I was using it, it was
pretty reasonable (think around a penny+ per sms). The APIs were very easy to
implement.

Symeon, I can confirm that you can't tell if a US number is a mobile.
I have another business where I use Pick as the backbone, and we
provide phone numbers, short code, bidirectional text/SMS (broadcast
outbound and process inbound requests), and related services
internationally - and it's all done with BASIC. In short, anyone can
port a land line number to a mobile, and transfer mobile numbers
amongst carriers to a point where you never really know anymore. This
is a good thing in a way, it's the same sort of federation that we
enjoy when we don't have to know the OS under a website, or the mail
server under an email address.

My suggestion would be not to try to be so smart. Just ask the user if
they want to provide a mobile number And if they want to opt-in to SMS
messages. You don't want to be one of those slimeballs that send text
messages without approval, and in some areas that might be illegal
anyway.

Best to you,
T

Thanks... that helps a lot.

Most of our programs are UniBasic and users get to choose a destination...

scripts from UniBasic. I do not know how to handle the problem of more than
two levels of nested quotes.

From the script, cranking in an LPTR1 or calling a UniBasic sub... on a
script-by-script basis... is a more flexible fix than the brute force
system-wide SETPTR.DEFAULT approach.

Of course, this LPTR command appears in a legacy script.

Perhaps I can insert a little SETPTR 0...etc into the script so that
we can bypass the server reboot problem.

 Comments would be appreciated.

Do your users mess about at all with their printer settings?

Will they get upset if this script starts messing about with their printer?

If you want this printout coming out on the same printer regardless of user,
I'd do a SETPTR 1... followed by a LPTR 1

Our rule was always the user's default printer is on unit 0, and it's the
one closest to their desk. Any other printer or unit was fair game for the
programmer as required. Not knowing your setup, my immediate reaction would
be is tampering with the printer going to mess up stuff I don't know
about, hence my preference for picking any unit OTHER than 0, and messing
about with that.

 Hi Bill,

It's in the UV account only. It sets the defaults by copying printer 0
settings into shared memory. To use it, do something like
SETPTR 0,1,AT LASER
SETPTR.DEFAULT

The problem with this is that it isn't saved between UV restarts so
you may need to set up a paragraph that runs as the machine is booted.

We use the following to mount a windows share:

mount -t cifs -o username=windowsusername //192.168.0.0/Websites/Data

Not sure if -t cifs works on AIX you might need to the old format -t smbs

First create the mount point on AIX
run as root, then enter the windows password for the user windowsusername
Now you can cd /mnt/cmexml and touch filename

Re: [U2] [UV] Auto Starting Applications

2013-07-10 Thread Peter Cheney
You can certainly launch a UV process from a unix script.
e.g.

#!/usr/bin/bash
cd /$path_to_uv_account/$ACCOUNTNAME
$UVHOME/bin/uv phantom PROGRAMNAME /somedir/log1.txt
$UVHOME/bin/uv LIST SOMEFILE DICTITEM1 DICTITEM2 /somedir/log2.txt

You can call this from cron too if required.

Cheers

Re: [U2] Mobile phones

2013-07-10 Thread Peter Cheney
Hi Symeon,

Interestingly we're facing a similar issue here in Oz whereby we're wanting to
send certain activation codes to our overseas clients for security purposes.

Currently we're doing this for our local clients and apart from the odd modem
failure, have no issues sending to domestic mobile numbers, sending to
international mobiles is proving to be a headache particularly with number
validation and certainty of delivery as others have mentioned.

There is the cost associated with this too. Currently I think it is $0.50 per
international SMS message and given that there's no guarantee of delivery
success, the likelihood of repeated failed attempts is quite real.

Searching around for possible solutions we found these which may be of interest
to you:

Firstly a possible regex solution to validate a number and the related
discussions
/^(\+|\d)[0-9]{7,16}$/;
Reference:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/5066329/regex-for-valid-international-mobile-phone-number

And then there's this phone number validator:
https://code.google.com/p/libphonenumber/

I've only started playing with the regex this week so do not have a working
solution yet and haven't really looked at the libphonenumber but it may be
useful as a front end validation prior to storing the number in UV.

One other thing I've considered is to not implement mobile number validation at
all. If the number is prefixed with a + then it would be considered an
international destination. As long as the remainder of the number is all
numeric I can send it to our SMS gateway and job is done.

We also have an alternative procedure/screen for customer service to use to
circumvent the international SMS failures and edit/enable the related functions
for those clients overseas.

HTH
Cheers
Peter

I have an application that is based in the UK, one of the things it does is
allow entry of a phone number, I then determine if this is a mobile (cell

We are embarking upon our first US client (well existing uk customer with a

if it is a cell phone ?

Re: [U2] [UV] Auto Starting Applications

2013-07-10 Thread Hona, David
Yes, this was a problem - but I haven't recently tried to execute UV11 and
cron. UV11 has a different shared memory model - inherited from UD - in
comparison to older releases.

A quick test shows that phantom processes are getting their own shared memory
segment under UV11.

So - at first glance - it appears no longer to be an issue from UV11 onwards.

Dave Church's uvcron.c program was the solution in the past/now to help for
those still waiting to user cron or similar scheduling tool...with uv.

Re: [U2] Writing to a Windoz box from Universe

2013-07-10 Thread Hona, David
Last time I checked, AIX has no native built-in capabilities to mount
CIFS/Windows shares.

1. Samba/AIX port - open source
If you wish to load the Samba port to AIX, you can use smbclient to perform an
sftp/ftp like connection that'll mount the share temporarily - then you can
get/put the file(s), etc.

2. FastConnect - IBM supported
If you use IBM's FastConnect for AIX - you have to mount the share as a
filesystem first - as smbclient is not supported unfortunately.

Both solutions - of course - require a Windows account to connect to the
Windows server and it must have sufficient rights on that share/filesystem to
write/read/delete files, etc.

Having a Windows share mounted all the time can be a security risk -
especially if using generic Windows accounts with too much rights.

There is the cost associated with this too. Currently I think it is
$0.50
per international SMS message and given that there's no guarantee of
delivery success, the likelihood of repeated failed attempts is
quite
 real.

Peter, my mouth fell open at that. We provide messaging to 150-200
countries for 3-12 cents (US) depending on the target location, and
this service can be integrated with any MV system on the planet
originating the message.

You'll never get guaranteed delivery anywhere. SMS receipt depends on
the consumer's phone carrier, their phone, whether they're roaming,
whether the user is on a national Do Not Call list, and many other
factors. Sometimes you'll need to use a different prefix or other code
to SMS a mobile phone, and in some countries some local carriers don't
support inbound international SMS. Nor are there ever bounce messages
because the carrier can't tell if the message was received, only (with
luck) that they sent it. Since all carriers intend to send messages,
they don't expect to provide bounce services.

As I said, the best way to know if you have a mobile phone number is
to get the user to provide it. The best way to get a text to the
mobile user is to get their collaboration - at minimum with a
confirmation from the mobile user that your message was received. It
might seem inelegant but we're talking about reaching out to an
audience of some billions of people. The scope is huge and technology
isn't perfect so we must use the easiest and ideally lowest-cost
remedies available. Sometimes end-users tell you how they want things
to work. I'm telling you what works, which is usually what end-users

Re: [U2] Writing to a Windoz box from Universe

2013-07-10 Thread Gregor Scott
AIX 6.1 does have it built in.
I think 5.2 ML12 might also include the ability to mount CIFS shares

Cheers,
David

I simply want to write a filename to a Windoz server from an IBM box running
AIX. What is the simplest method? I would like to avoid ftp. Been there,
done that!

Thanks!
