John, There is also a huge amount of things which can be done with a "single line query" in both UD and UV. Because you don't know how to do them does not mean they cannot be done. As you say, you are new, it's an unwise man who rubbishes a product he knows little about. Suggest you ask a few questions, especially on the issues which take so much time to do. Very little support required? I have just started to use UD, and development is horrific, it take 10 times longer to do things that can be accomplished by a single line query in an RDBMS'. Our system requires constant attention, more attention than even MS Sql server on a bad week. But the thing that annoys me most is the poor support from IBM. I cannot get access to some of their tech docs because our UD license is held by our VAR (Don't ask). What kind of policy is that? For any other DBMS I can get access to vast amounts of information, and I don't even need to have seen the software, nevermind have a license. I looked forward to working with UD when I found out I would be developing on it, I have never used an mvdbms before, and the concept intrigued me. But so far, I do not see any benefit to using UD for anything what-so-ever, and nothing IBM or our VAR has provided has even hinted that UD, and UV are anything but an archaic relic of times gone by, like COBOL. Why else would a company make it so difficult for someone to learn about development on their software, if not because they didn't really have any interest in supporting it, and believe that you should have upgraded to more modern technology already? Not sure about doing it from Universe as it's the unix permissions which come into effect. You could use the sudo utility and then allow them to kill the process from Unix or a universe shell executing a unix command. Sudo (superuser do) allows a system administrator to give certain users (or groups of users) the ability to run some (or all) commands as root while logging all commands and arguments. RE: [U2] UniData PE 6.0 Problem
I had the similar problem once but on D3 not unidata, never worked on Unidata, so this a shot in the dark. It all occurred because I changed the server name on which the virtual machine was running. My Computer > properties > Computer Name. The server name had been setup during installation and changing the name meant the server could no longer be found. We changed the name back and then changed the setup so the virtual machine looked for the server name by using the registry. Changing the name afterwards caused no problems. Doubt you have the same problem, but just curious if you have changed the server name, you never know. This does not effect the way users connect but the way the virtual machine locates the database. RE: [U2] RE:
A few years back I did an archive system for someone, I restored their AIX database straight onto a PC from Tape and then saved the database onto DVD as a zip file. I did this for various end of months, they then unzipped which every file they needed back from the DVD to the hard disk and the system was back to which every point they needed. It was a lot cheaper than migrating and they simply have a 4 user license on a PC. Also remember which ever option you choose you will need to know the database. Migrating can be very labour intensive which would probably incur most costs. As you need to know the database which ever route you take, I'd suggest you document it and get someone to do your extractions when and IF you need them. You can also get someone to setup an ODBC link to your universe database so your could build your own reports from EXCEL, for example. Once the files are setup for access they are automatically flattened and appear in an MSquiry as list of files and fields. The old app was on an AIX box (v 4.3). We were migrating to AIX 5.0, but at the time it was suggested that the app could be migrated from AIX 4.3 to AIX 5.0. So a new app written in Progress replaced it. There was nothing wrong with the app. We do not know why newer version of UniVerse (if it was available) was not used for the migration instead. The AIX 4.3 box will be replaced either by a new AIX box or new Solaris box, the latter being our new institution-wide standard. The old app and DB was kept around because we still inquire on the older data from time to time. So we don't need full blown app development but just need to extract the data for inquiry purpose. BTW, we have no idea which version of UniVerse was used to develop the old app. Regards, Howard Wong Asset Management 416-784-8728 [EMAIL PROTECTED] -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 15, 2005 10:27 AM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Cc: Wong, Howard Subject: RE: HW> Am I on the right track? RE: [U2] UV migration
I had to restore over 120 copies from AIX backups to a PC, to create an EOM zip file for archiving. I managed to connect the RS6000 20 GB dat tape unit directly to the PC using a SCSI interface card and a driver I found on the NET. IBM said it was not possible but it worked just fine, guess they meant they'd never done it before. Maybe not the answer for you if you are only doing this once from a machine. The reason I mention it is having snap shots from various points in history can be very handy, especially if there was a lot of housekeeping. Another thought occurred to me. You were saying this wasn't getting used all that often anymore. I take it this is just more or less for reference from time to time. Would it be feasible to move the data to a PC? You'd have limited access to it. I know you mentioned they weren't likely to put money out to upgrade to a new version of UV. And with the costs of UV licenses, I can't say that I'd blame them. BUT, there is a UniVerse Personal Edition that may be the trick for you. It doesn't come with support, but you can find support other places (contractors, VARs, etc. - I actually do a little of that in the healthcare field where I came from on the side as time permits). The UV Personal Edition runs on a RedHat Linux and Windows. I think it allows 2 simultaneous connections to it. Link to IBM's UV site: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/u2/universe/ The PE version has been temporarily removed from the site, but it is possible to get a hold of them. I might still have a CD around, or may be able to get it. I'm dealing with UD more at the moment. Does this sound like something that may be of use? One of the considerations when choosing between extracting the data and keeping the origianl, is which data to extract. IF so this will also work. QSELECT FILE "ITEM" SAVING fieldnumber (you must use the field number not a dict.) Or SELECT FILE "ITEM" BY.EXP dict SAVING dict. With qselect you must specify the field and with a select you must explode the attribute and specify the dict. Sudo operates on a per-command basis, it is not a replacement for the shell. andy -Original Message- From: Rich Sias [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 28 May 2005 08:56 To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org; Dave Schexnayder Subject: Re: [U2] Creating AIX Users for UniVerse ** Reply to message from "Dave Schexnayder" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on Thu, 26 May 2005 10:32:01 -0500 > Hi Gals and Guys, > > We would like to release a administrative tool for our UniVerse/AIX (and > SCO) users which would allow them to create users on Unix and set their > passwords. > > Many of our users do not have IT staff and only do system management in Unix > when they have to. On a system I worked with in 90's till 03, we had is as a two part process. One part was the app to interface with the "help desk person". It was a user interface querying for selected data items such as name, login id, creation, deletions, reset and other items we deemed neccessary. This apps only job is to collect the data and save it as a record. The other app is a phantom running as "superuser" in HPUX and when it noticed a record appeard, it would begin processing that record. It would revalidate the data fields again to be sure strings, numbers were what they were supposed to be and be limited to max character counts. Rejects were marked with errors and moved to logfile. Then it would process the data and using the superuser status execute login creation, update, delettion commands using the data provided. Either errors were attached or successful message attached and record moved to logfile. We recorded loginid for supervisor requesting, loginid of help desk person, time stamp at each interval of the process among other things. I later wrote a report for accounting dept that investigated an occasional activity or person looking for certain behaviour. RE: [U2] Viaduct data transfer
The command string is simulating the keys you would enter if you were to do the same manually via the menus, this depends on the version of viaduct you are using as these changed over the years. 008 PRINT PCMCD:"KEY /O /P E":DOSPATH:"UPLOAD.FILE#1 2O":ENDCMD: If you use the alt key do you access the file transfer menu, this is the ALT+F bit in the command string, this changed in later versions to ALT+T, ALT+F is now the file menu, windows standard. The E would then take you to the export menu, field one would be filled with DOSPATH, the next by the upload file, etc PCMCD contains the standard viaduct initialization string. RE: [U2] making a .csv file into an .xls file?
I recently looked into auto formatting text files ready for EXCEL, e.g., take a CSV file and change it to xls and at the same time format the columns widths etc. I know it can be done other ways, xml etc, but this way we could convert all out current reports without changing any code. There where a few utilities that could do this, they also convert from CSV to xls by simply calling the utility and specifying the name. Here is just one example, not the one I tested. http://www.softinterface.com/Convert-XLS/Convert-XLS.htm If you look for other software it must be able to do the business from the command prompt so it can be automated into you code. Create the report, issue the command and there you go, one xl file ready to use. Our UV system creates an ASCII .csv file for another system to import on a daily basis. The 3rd party software after a recent upgrade now only imports .xls files. Is there an easy way to "automate" Excel to load the .csv, then save as .xls? Or how much more difficult is it to create the .xls instead of a .csv? I thought about getting one of those programs that records mouse clicks, and create a macro of the conversion (since the filename is the same each day), but wonder if there was something we could do in a batch file and run every day under the Windows scheduler. Example LIST VENF16 72988359 F21 VENF16F21... 72988359 T13219224 T13219226 T13219227 QSELECT VENF16 72988359 SAVING 21 3 record(s) selected to SELECT list #0. Only the 3 MV value are selected. Re: [U2] Excel downloads
Hi Laure, I used a simple technique for this a while back. Create a program and EXECUTE the retrieve statement and CAPTURE the output. If you add Char(9) to a dict and place this between each field excel will then split it in to columns. EG SORT FILE BY FIELD1 BREAK.ON FIELD1 TAB TOTAL 1 TAB TOTAL 2 DET.SUP Then simply email the output array to the user. If you add html to the array then you can even format the text so it looks better when excel opens it, but this can slow things down as you need to insert table/tr/td into the array. [U2] PDF Document
Hi all, Has anyone gone down the PDF route to print/email documents such as invoices directly from U2. I've seen lots of packages out there that allow dynamic pdf prints based on data passed. Some require a VB.net shell which reads the data file then builds the pdf document. As an example I would like to create an xml doc.send to unix/windowsrun utility against the xml file which then merges the xml data with a template and prints the pdf. Just wondered if anyone had done this before, what utility they used and how easy it was. thanks andy --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
[U2] PE Client Install
Has anyone had a problems loading the Personal edition of the client. 10.1 I loaded Universe no problems and can logon. When I try to load the Client it says I must close all programs or finish off any previous installations. I deinstalled everything and even cleaned my registry, but still the same. The master install screen appears, the error occurs when I select any of the install options, admin, unidebugger etc... I had a similar problem when I first installed the PE version. I installed and logged in, but it kept telling me my licence was invalid. (uvconfig showed an expiry date in the past). However, when I rebooted the system the expiry date moved to a month ahead of the current date and everything else seemed ok (well, as far as I could tell).
