RE: [U2] - Determining time sequence

2005-06-28 Thread Bob Gerrish

If you are meaning "Across the entire system" as in multiple computers,
make sure you are synchronizing time from a common source. If you
have Unix systems, running NTP / XNTP services or equivalent and
synching with multiple (at least 3) stratum 2 time servers, then syncing
internal systems with your time servers would be needed.

The thing is I do not want to end up with a bottle neck as the idea
behind this is to create a log of transactions across the entire system
which can then be used to replicate the data into SQL Server in
sequential order.

So I want a system wide sequential ID not per file. Using time and
looping if the key exists will allow me to do this, as I have down to
milliseconds for the key. However the regular time can be effected by
Daylight savings time and I want to guarantee time order.

Maybe you should (re)read the thread on sequential IDS --> simply have a
"counter" that you increment and you can then be sure to maintain the
correct sequence of events. If you want you could then add time() as
part of the key, but the REAL, absolute sequence is then derived from
your sequential ID, and the noted time is simply ancillary documentation

Re: [U2] Unique Ids

Although I have seen most of the "Unique ID' scenarios that
were presented, there is one that has been missed. I have
seen keys that appeared identical but had one or more trailing
spaces. They appeared unique to the untrained observer. AND
this could happen with a SQL database, also if the key field was
a text field.

My email was down for several days - now that it is up, I will reply.
One of my clients need something similar, but when switching from
ADV PICK on SCO to UniVerse on Win2K. I set them up with the

predefined overlay. The docs say it will work with Unix, the only
caveat is that Reform, itself, only runs on Windows.

Re: [U2] Server-To-Server - Round Two

2004-10-27 Thread Bob Gerrish
I only have a second - I'll address the directory tree copy you couldn't
do.
WS-FTP should allow you to copy an entire directory tree. It is available
online (you'll need to search for it) for free.
Alternately, if you happen to have Samba running on each Unix box, you
could just use Windows Explorer to copy directory trees.
NFS mount across the boxes could also work. Connect to the source
directory and: tax cvf - . | (cd /destinaion-path ; tar xf -)
This could be used to copy the user's home directories if they are in a
tree structure.

I setup an account on the new server. I need help with correlating the new

If there is a way to copy over users and printers, that would help.
Thanks to those who responded to the first post.
The command-prompt FTP functionality appears to be unable to copy a
directory tree, rather, only one folder at a time.
It is not clear to me if it is makes sense to "mount" a directory from
another box.
I am not sure if tar is usable since I doubt that the tape drive on the old
box can be connected to the new box.

A new [refurbished] HP-Ux RX-2600 Itanium server arrived yesterday.
I installed UV on this new box and now want to copy most everything from old
to new.
What is the best way to do this? The tech manual "Administering UniVerse"
appears to mainly focus on inter-platform transfers. Suggestions would be
appreciated.

Set it up on the Unix box, if it is a static IP. Crudest (and easiest)
way is to put it into the hosts file (/etc/hosts)

if you rely on system variables, @LOGNAME , @WHO in particular, for any kind
of security / access control , you may be interested to know that these
'static'/'read only' variables can very easily be modified to contain any
values you like - including other user ids and account names.

Although we aren't using schemas, we too have experienced timing issuues

We supply our customers with a 3rd party report writer that connects to

Most of the time this works fine, but on some queries we have noticed that
the query can either take hours or get in to what appears to be a
continous loop. When this occurs the server is normally affected by the
CPU running at 100% and all other processes on the server suffer as you
would expect.
This normally results in us having to dial in to the customer site, kill
the process on the Windows side and then log of the Universe user at TCL
to free up the server again.
Project I finished up with in March was experiencing this same behavior,
occasionally, on some files (no Schemas). Processes had to be killed,
also. Switching to OleDB helped speed up processes significantly.

Re: [U2] READU vs LOCK

2004-07-05 Thread Bob Gerrish
You are both on the right track.
> I may be wrong, but I have a vague memory that in the very early days,
> multivalue databases (Pick?) didn't have record level locking.
Martin you are not wrong. And it wasn't the "very early days" :) Well maybe
it was and I'm just a dinosaur ...
It was the early days until some of the PICK variants started doing record
locks.
At any rate, Pick did group locking, not record locking. The entire
group
a record is in was locked and held locked until the process was finished and
did it's WRITE or Release. So it's possible the use of LOCK is related to
that. Alternatively perhaps the program was trying to LOCK the entire
FILE (!)
So in effect maybe it's doing a FILELOCK ?
The group locks were not a problem in low volume situations with
little activity. In large applications (Like MMC - Manufacturing Management
and Control - the predecessor of about 1/3 of the Manufacturing packages)
processing was complex enough and high volume enough that group locks
on multiple file updates often lead to deadlock situations.
Each file was assigned a semaphore lock. These semaphore locks were often
used
in conjunction with record locking via Escom user modes and a LOCK file
to produce pseudo record locks.

Mark you said that the LOCKs are assigned to particular files, so if I
tried to read another record from that file I have to wait right? So this
sounds
like a primitive form of FILELOCK to me.
It was more of a LOCK on updates to the LOCK file for records pertaining to
a particular database file.

I always tell everyone that you can do it in PICK with half
the budget and a 1/3 the staff of any given project in Oracle.
That is the plus. There is a lot of flexibility in the data structure.
I agree with the security side. In RDBMS models, in general,
you can (must) embed constraints and business rules in the
database, itself rather than the application. This makes the
database more secure.
