A Ha. You are seeing Indexes, which have the absolute path hard-coded in
the file header. Those can't be copied by non-uniVerse processes without
them appearing to be corrupted. There are no VOC pointers to those files
in a 'real' account; only the header of the file to which each index
belongs.

If you wish to see whether the indexes are working on the copy, try this
command:

LIST.INDEX FILENAME ALL

in the VOC of the copy account.

Hi all. I have a question and hopefully I'll give you all the info you need to

Universe 9.4 SB+ 3.4.0 I don't know if SB+ comes into play on this. NT

We make a copy of our live account every so often. When doing this we use NT to
make the copy and then run it through a universe process so that Universe knows
about the account. All works just fine, we have been doing this for years.

What I just am now doing is creating a VOC pointer on a different machine (our
testing machine which happens to be w2k) and pointing over to Universe files in
the copied account. The pointer works fine on some files and not so fine on
other. It works fine on all files in the Live account, it is the copy of the
account it doesn't work in.

The trigger here seems to be files that have I_ folders on them, Index Map?.

We are of the mind that when we copy the account over, some pointer is not
being re-set in these files/index maps. That we are failing to run a routine
when we first copy the account.

This voc pointer works fine on the original 'live' account and fine on files in the test account that don't have this I-folder.

We checked permissions, sharing and all those goodies. Don't see any reason there for this. And again, it works on (apparently) all files without the "I-xx" and doesn't work on all files with one.

Re: [U2] UV: Array index out of bounds

2004-10-01 Thread Karl L Pearson
As an administrator, I do all my programming in ED or vi. I even write
HTML with vi (vi=vim/gvim in all cases). I grew up on ED and don't mind
using it. Of course, I never run an 80x24 screen anymore. I'm in 80x60
so a 'P' gives me a large window of code.

Working in something one is used to makes work faster. Of course, that
begs the question which is something about stopping to sharpen the
saw...

RE: [U2] UV: Array index out of bounds

2004-10-01 Thread Karl L Pearson
The error occured during a simple EDit, not filing or compiling or even
adding anything. The source code was less than 300 lines, too. We don't
use SB+. I have a bogus TCL which is my own security feature, but I made
myself exempt and use 'real' TCL.

I'll do what Ray suggested and take a look at the source after VLISTing
it.

This reminds me of an approach I'm using to bypass the need for ODBC or
uniObjects for (insert favorite beverage here)...

* Linux Web server, NFS (or Samba) mounts to uniVerse server,
* mvBASIC app to write HTML directly to WWW space on Linux Web Server,
* Clients open Mozilla (or gag, IE) and
* go to Linux Web Server UV generated Catalog/Order entry screens,
* select this and that, click submit,
* CGI (I use bash scripting for my cgi) writes an order to disk,
* cron script on AIX server polls for orders and if present,
* kicks off a link to the OrderEntry routines in mvBASIC and
* an order is generated, along with a ship-order updates, etc.

Simple, CHEAP. Two things that help an organization keep their
bottom-line down.

[U2] UV: Array index out of bounds

2004-09-30 Thread Karl L Pearson
The error message in ~/uv/errlog is:
Thu Sep 30 08:42:58 66 root Program "ED": pc = 4d28, Message[040005]

SYS.MESSAGE 040005<1> = Array index out of bounds

This has happened twice. Once yesterday and once today. I wouldn't have
noticed if it hadn't happened to me one of those times.

I was editing a program and the session died with the above error
message printed to my screen which I read briefly before the ON.EXIT
stuff erased it.

Anyone seen this before?

We are on AIX 4.3.3 and UV 10.0.14.

Thanks

I second VI-Improved (vim, gvim, etc.) as a free download. I've
installed in on my RS/6000, too. The syntax hi-lighting is awesome and
customizable. But for me, one of the most awesome features is its
'many-level' undo.

For those interested in a few basics of vi, I wrote a white-paper
entitled 'Common VI Commands' which is available at

RE: [U2] [UV] - Wide Zero

2004-09-22 Thread Karl L Pearson
Okay, on Unix I did the program this way:

0001: NET = 294987.31
0002: VAT = 51622.78
0003: TOT = NET + VAT
0004: print 'Basic: ':NET:' + ':VAT:' = ':TOT
0005: execute 'sh -c \echo "scale=2;294987.31+51622.78"|bc\'
capturing BC
0006: BC = BC<1>
0007: print '/usr/bin/bc: ':BC
0008: if TOT = 346610.09 then
0009: print 'Equal'
0010: end else
0011: print 'Wide-Zero problem?'
0012: end
0013:end

and got this output:
Basic: 294987.31 + 51622.78 = 346610.09
/usr/bin/bc: 346610.09
Wide-Zero problem?

AND as you see, there's no difference in the output yet what appears to
my eye to be TRUE the code sees as FALSE. Something looks fishy, but I
can't see a reason why.

Re: [U2] [UD] - I-Desc IF, THEN, ELSE or SUBR -IFS

2004-09-21 Thread Karl L Pearson
Okay then... That works for me, too, but in my case, I just get the
LAST, or highest numbered item. That's because our F6 only contains n+1
for line items on an invoice.

Is there syntax in an I-Desc that would equal:

FOR X = F6 to 1 step -1

???

Thanks,

Karl

Okay, I'll bite... What you say leads me to believe that a TRANS I-Desc
is dangerous because if the data changes in the remote file, then the
index isn't updated and the data in the local file's index is out-dated,
right?

if that's the case, then doesn't that mean that the local file's index
is holding all the data that is 'TRANS'ed from the other file? Isn't
that NOT how an index works? I thought it just pointed to the attribute
in the other file where it could look that data up.

OR, is it that the stored procedure (TRANS I-Desc) might become
different from the remote file's procedure if that DICT item is
re-written/changed/removed, etc. ???

I'm a bit confused and would like some clarification... Perhaps what
I've understood all these years has been superseded somehow/where.

Zero items... In this application, one person purchases based on
invoiced items. however, if this particular item isn't working, quotes
go into the purchasing screen, thus causing items only quoted to clients
being ordered. Not a good thing.

The syntax that was failing was standard enough (DICT=TYPE, 3=Quote):

   STMT = 'SELECT BKORD WITH F26 = "" AND F10 > 0'
   STMT := ' AND F01 = "N" AND TYPE # "3"'
STMT := ' AND F02 = ':WHOUSENO:' BY VENDNAME BY NAME BY @ID'

[U2] UV: Indexing I-Descriptors

2004-09-17 Thread Karl L Pearson
I just had an experience (UV 10.0.14, AIX 4.3.3) of indexing an
I-Descripted DICT item and than having a very important routine fall
down.

Selecting against the TYPE I-Desc fails after being indexed and doesn't
before.

I seem to remember a bug in this but hoped the bug had been solved...

Here's the I-Desc:
0001 I
0002 TRANS(BOHDR,(ORDER.NUMBER),'5','X')
0003
0004 ORD?TYP
0005 2R
0006 S

Another thought: Is there a problem right justifying? Should it be left
(counter-intuitive from my perspective)?

Re: [U2] LPTR PaperSource problems on Windows Server 2003

2004-09-14 Thread Karl L Pearson
How about putting a space after the first DQ:
SETPTR 1,90,60,0,0,1,AT ITS_01," PaperSource=Tray 2"

Of course, the thought occurs to me that if it's going to the correct
printer, putting a space isn't going to solve this. Just "popping off
the top" of my head for this suggestion.

RE: [U2] [Unix] creation date/time

2004-08-31 Thread Karl L Pearson
The question was: Creation date and time, not last accessed date and
time.

I've not heard of such a thing. It might take the creation of a routine
which checks the monitored directory for the creation of new files, then
catalogs and indexes its findings to a file which could be used as a
lookup table when that information is needed...

Re: [U2] Secure connex from outside world

2004-08-20 Thread Karl L Pearson
I've set our system up to do this. I use a java telnet client (jta) I
found on the internet, an Applet which can be set to use either port 23
(Telnet) or 22 (SSH).

But, I doubt this will do the whole job either, because Putty is quite
good. I use it also. I had to edit and tweak the terminfo file and tic
my changes back into the terminfo database. Putty even supports "Screen"
printing (AUX port redirection).

If you can't find the jta website, I could zip and send you my version
with my settings. It is loaded on a web server and is accessed via any
java-compliant browser.

Oh, here's another script for doing this:

#!/bin/sh
ival=`echo "$1" | tr 'a-f' 'A-F'`
bc << EOF
obase=16
$ival
EOF

You can change the 16 to 8 or 2 and obase to ibase for decimal to
hex/hex to decimal...

I add a |tr 'a-f' 'A-F'

to the command and then you can enter the hex digiest a-f in either

Error message when compiling, but WHY!?!??

VNM = trim(field(RTVREC<8>),':',2)   <=- Incorrect, obvious I hope
VNM = trim(field(RTVREC<8>,':',2))   <=- Correct

When I compiled the first, I got the error:

This isn't 'C' but I'm thinking the compiler is written in 'C' so...
Yeah, right.

I've done a bit of checking and came to the conclusion that IO was NOT
an issue, as both disks loads are very even and in the low teens to low
20%-ile of use.

I changed the uniVerse tunable FSEMNUM from 23 to 53. Today, so far, the
load average is in the low 2s instead of in the 3s and 4s. Of course we
only have 30 of 42 users, so time will tell...

The symptoms of the performance problem is that users notice things
going very slowly, especially selects and sorts, but also when typing
text there are pauses of parts of a second to a couple seconds when the
system is very sluggish.

I really didn't remove the .Type30 files from disk, only the email. That

Re: [U2] What is &UFD& ????

2004-07-19 Thread Karl L Pearson
&UFD& is short for Unix File Directory and is the underlying directory
which exists for each account in your uniVerse system. The files in it
are your account files and shouldn't be messed with.

Adding a record ERRLOG won't have any affect, unless it's lower-case and
only in the UV account directory itself. If the file exists, uniVerse
will log TCL errors, BASIC Run machine errors, such as: Variable %n ...

One other option on Unix is the difference between " and ' quotes. To
force an absolute, use 'TRAN.EXT-14320S1??\4-DF' rather than "...". Unix
allows special characters and variables to be 'checked' withint double
quotes, but uses strict string representation within single quotes.

Try putting two \\ so the escape will be used as it was meant to be, to
keep special characters from being treated like special characters.

Re: [U2] Script Sans ncurses

2004-06-09 Thread Karl L Pearson
Good point. I think I may have a copy somewhere (disk)...

You bring up something I hadn't even considered. I've manipulated the
terminfo database to get what I want quite a few times, but my mind
hadn't wandered over to that. I can probably just dissect the uvxterms
terminfo settings and get everything I need.

Thanks a heap. Getting old has one major drawback (other than that) and
that is. . . uh, I forget.

Bingo! That's easier than digesting on terminfo PLUS it will work with
any emulation that I've got working in uniVerse.

Thanks!

[U2] Script Sans ncurses

2004-06-09 Thread Karl L Pearson
Sorry for the off-topic query:

Is there a means of formatting a telnet/ssh/xterm 'window' so a looping
shell script could update information without repainting the entire
screen on each pass (without @(0,15)..)? (printf, echo...)

I have a program written in our green screen app which I envision would
would be much faster by running at the OS level using shell (ksh)
scripts.

I have found that by sending ESC-c I can clear the screen. I've tried a
few others but haven't found anything that doesn't clear the screen but
sends the cursor 'home'.I hope someone has experience with this and can
point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Re: [U2] [UV] TIME() truncation

2004-05-27 Thread Karl L Pearson
Thanks for the responses. I tested and will use

$options TIME.MILLISECONDS

because of it's compile-time rather than run-time impact. But, I was
interested to find that TIME() on my Linux PE 10.0.2 box returns no
decimal. On my AIX 4.3.3 and UV 10.0.14 it did and using $options
TIME.MILLISECONDS worked just fine. Since I don't have an HPUX system to
test this on, I'll let the client do the testing.

[U2] [UV] TIME() truncation

2004-05-27 Thread Karl L Pearson
I remember seeing this but searching archives isn't working at
oliver.com. My main problem with searching is that I can't remember the
correct text to search for.

I have a client that uses TIME() in filenames, etc. when creating items,
and even for creating some files. They just upgraded from UV9.6 (HPUX)
to 10.n and are getting numbers like 12345.9239813 and want to get rid
of the .9239813 part. Using field(TIME(),'.',1) is not acceptible
because they have about 2000 programs they'd have to modify. They are
hoping for an OS-based solution. Is there one? I can't remember because
at the time this was being discussed, it wasn't an issue.

TIA,

Re: [U2] Redhat (and others?) with updatedb process

2004-05-25 Thread Karl L Pearson
uniVerse doesn't use locate, so running it never would be fine, unless
you use it programatically for some reason.

I set updatedb to run via cron at 1am on my Linux machines.

As an FYI, in some Linux boxes I've managed, there is a routine also run
daily (logrotate) that can have errors if the log settings are set to be
too verbose for any given busy application (sendmail, apache, etc.)

Here's how I do it in a script named /usr/bin/prevlogin:

if [ $# -ge 1 ]
then
  a=`/bin/echo $1 | /usr/bin/cut -c1 | /usr/bin/tr YN yn`

  else
/bin/echo "Usage: prevlogin [yn] [message]"
exit 2
  fi
else
  if [ -f /etc/nologin ]
  then
/usr/bin/id | grep 'uid=0' > /dev/null
if [ $? -ne 0 ]
then
  /bin/cat /etc/nologin
/bin/sleep 7
  exit 2

## add to the end of /etc/profile

#`date >> ./loguse.$LOGNAME`
#`tail -20 ./loguse.$LOGNAME > ./temp.$LOGNAME`
#`cp ./temp.$LOGNAME ./loguse.$LOGNAME`
#`rm ./temp.$LOGNAME`

## The following line prevents logins if /etc/nologin is present
## AIX already checks for /etc/nologin, so this is redundant
# . /usr/bin/prevlogin
## End of prevlogin call

Contents of nologin.klp:

On AIX the nologin file in /etc is removed on boot up. Be sure to
include this capability in rc.local (use the correct file) else you will
find as I have that users start referring to you as "evil IT guy".

Re: [OT] RE: [U2] Unsubscribe

2004-05-11 Thread Karl L Pearson
There's a setting in the majordomo configuration file for each list
(u2-users.config) for administrivia, which when set to yes will forward
emails with suspect words (subscribe/unsubscribe) to the admin(s). It
would be good if that were to be set, though it can cause other
problems, like not allowing discussions of subscribing and
unsubscribing. Oh wait...
