Hi Sanjeeb,

If you have not already attended the base U2 training courses I would
suggest that you convince your employers to arrange for you to do so. To
be able to offer outsourcing to a company using U2 it is usually
necessary for the outsourcing companies staff to be conversant in the
environment. There are a couple of people on this list, most notably Ray
Wurlod and Brian Leach who offer training. As do IBM. Most of these
simple questions would be able to be answered in that forum and then you
would be able to fully support your clients.

Regards,

Phil

What does a negative index mean in an array .If LIST-1=ID is a

If we do a external conversion usng OCONV(sysdate,'D2/'),the D indicates
the date conversion specification but why is the 2/ being used

can be the change in the conversion?

RE: Spam:RE: [U2] Universe/UniObjects and Visual Studio

2007-03-15 Thread leslie chamberlin
Hello all,

I worked through Brian's tutorial he mentions below and found it MUCH
more helpful than anything else I have found so far. I am having one
issue that I will work through shortly. The cmd.GenerateXML is not
working with my test system according to the error due to my version of
Universe (10.1.12). I am setting up a test environment on my laptop
with 10.2 and will see if that helps. I was, however, able to create a
VB program that accessed my Universe database and updated it.
Success!!! Made it through page 19 of 24 and updated data with no
issues and full understanding. Thanks, Brian, for shedding light on the
subject. I am going to go through the knowledge base and see if there
are more toys with which to play. Thanks to all who contribute to the
list and the website!!

there is a tutorial on using UniObjects with VB Express on the U2UG

Check out : www.mvopen.org/cms and click the Knowledge Base link.

Regards,

Hi guys,

I am messing with Visual Basic Express edition. I was hoping to use
UniObjects against my Universe Database. The examples in the UniObjects
Developers Guide are a little outdated. How do I get the UniObjects to
appear in the toolbar (if you can do this) ? They refer to Sub
Form_Load, which I have seen in older versions of VB, but not VB 2005.
Basically what I am looking for is a 'quick fix' for the 5 minute
program example in the Developers Guide that has already taken me beyond
that time frame.

Thanks
Anthony

HTH

I did some poking around earlier and found that the GenerateXML actually
seems to call down to a subroutine named GETXMLSUB held in the BP file
of
the uv account. On some 10.1 versions it is present, but not cataloged:
I
found when I added it to global catalog as *GETXMLSUB it worked fine for
me,
though I guess it's not officially supported at that release.

It might be worth giving it a try.

I know when I was living in an RPG world in a previous life, you could
take a pre-test for the IBM RPG's certification. Does anyone know if
they have that available for U2? If so, you could have them take the
pre-test. After identifying any weak spots, have Kevin at Precision
Solutions whip you up a course just on what they need. He was fantastic
working with me to identify my needs, and then creating a course with
just the content I needed. After emails back and forth discussing
certain aspects, he was able to condense several courses into one. In
this day and age where time is so valuable, it was a Godsend. He is
reasonably priced also!!

I am sure Jon's courses are great also. I simply have not experienced
any of his training. He does write great books...I do know that!!

Getting certified is simply a matter of taking the exam. No prerequisite

So is there a fair comparison (like consumer reports) between Wintegrate

I can't imagine Accuterm 2K2 falling short on any comparison for any
features as Peter Schellenbach has impressed me tremendously with his
knowledge (or access to) MS internals and MV internals in his product.

Therefore, is there an unbiased review of the features of these 2
emulators.
And what about Procomm and/or Viaduct.

The usual rule for technologists is we want what we want because
someone
else is paying for it. The usual rule for business people is we
want
what
works as long as it's cost effective (or cheap). :-)

The cost difference isn't really fair for a side-by-side comparison of
the
 benefits of the products.

To me the cost is of paramount importance because whatever wIntegrate
has
that AccuTerm doesn't have can't possibly justify wIntegrate costing
$11,250
for a 50 user operation vs $1,000 for AccuTerm when I'm paying for it.
It's
like U2 costing $75,000 for a 100 user license while DB2 or SQL Server
costs
$5,000 - $7,500 for an unlimited single CPU license. It makes it hard
to
 compete.

I'm all ears. I've been using Wintegrate for 10 years (most recent is
W98)
and was Pro-Wintegrate up until 2 years ago when a client wanted to
get
out
from under VE-Client (that's another disaster).

I wrote up my side of the story and another consultant posted his side
about
Accuterm 2K2 (The latest). Side, by side things were equal until we
got to
WED, GED and, best of all (although no flames for being only price
conscious), the price. IBM wanted $225 per seat for my client's 40
user
system and Accuterm was $1,000 for 50 seats. The best IBM would do is
a 5%
 discount.

Considering the immense support that I've personally received from
Peter
Schellenbach and the wonderful features of Accuterm, compared to the
stoic
corporate stonewall from IBM it was more of a no brainer.

Perhaps if you're remembering Accuterm only as a terminal emulator
then
that's not fair to accuterm. The WED program editor is the best I've
seen
in
my 3 decades of MV programming and the GED environment allows
VB-looking
forms to work directly with the MV database without any ODBC or other
middleware. Plus, there's a whole boatload of VB-Scripting
capabilities
that
make every PC and network resource available to a MV program.

As an emulator, accuterm can have multiple sessions in split windows,
bridge
copy/paste between different systems, copy/paste to MS apps, detect PC
elements like last window opened etc plus all the expected keyboard
mapping,
 emulations and other emulator stuff.

For us programmers, WED is worth the price of admission by itself.
Words
cannot fully describe how wonderful editing MV programs with a notepad
editor that understands MV concepts as compared to just using notepad.

 My 2 cents for Accuterm.

RE: [U2] RE: Week number of the year

It is purely every 7 days starting with Jan 1. This formula will work
great.

Thanks to all who replied! -Leslie

Leslie,

What is your definition of week number of the year?

If it's purely every 7 days starting with Jan 1st then you could use
INT((OCONV(MY.DATE, DJ)+6) / 7)

Subject: [U2] Sanctimoniousness never works (was List dead ?)

I ought to know. I've been guilty of it enough times.

First, this is not a direct reply to the poster of this quote. I
merely chose this out of several that had this, If you weren't so
stupid you would... tone to them.

That being said, I'm going to jump in and defend those experienced,
professional, over-worked, computer professionals who bother to
participate in a list like this while they have bosses, users, and
customers screaming at them that, THE WORLD IS COMING TO AN END!
What? Oh. No. I didn't select a printer. Never mind.

It is not about physical effort. It is not about intelligence. It is
about usability. And frankly, I am appalled at the number of posts I
see from so called computer professionals professing that you,
moron, ought to be smart enough to click the correct button, idiot.

I really pity the users who are victimized by your attitudes.

When I hosted the lists, the majority of the misdirected, posted from
the wrong address, etc., posts were from .EDU domains. Even I, big
mouth that I am, didn't leap to the claim that .EDU was a sub-
standard domain space. sheesh!

If a number of people have a problem with usability, it is a problem
with usability. Period. It is not about the intelligence of the
users, regardless of their job function. It is not about the
intelligence of the list moderator(s). It is not about the
intelligence of the list host, who DOES THIS FOR FREE. (Always a hot
button of mine.)

I happen to disagree with the current list configuration. And it has
been taken up with the Board of U2UG. But to castigate people is
simply, Bad form, eh? Bad form.

And the next time someone insults me indirectly about my inability to
click the right button on an e-mail reply, I'll check the timestamp
to see if they are posting from work, with enough time on their hands
to dick around with list mail, or if they are spending their time at
night doing it because they really care.

RE: [U2] Newest UV UniDebugger

2006-04-05 Thread leslie chamberlin
I have the same issue. I am a newbie, so I assumed I did not know how
to use it properly. I find this especially true when the breakpoint or
request to stop when a variable changes is in a called subroutine. I
believe I did have the called subroutine as active, but it would not
stop at all when the variable changed. I have read the available help
and could not get past that. It also does not know the program is
complete. It simply goes into some black hole. The whole situation
made me uneasy and I could not find any help, so I use RAID which is
what others here use. I would much prefer to use Unidebugger. I would
love an online class session on this.

Thanks, Leslie Chamberlin

Does anyone else have trouble with the debugger? I'll set a break point
in a program, and the debugger will blow right by it sometimes. It can
be very frustrating.

That's easy. In the view menu select 3 for Host. You can also close
the other windows (session is the host screen). Finally, just drag the
window edges (of the session window) to make it larger

I've only recently tried using the UniDebugger.

The terminal display window is so tiny, I can't read any
messages it outputs. It'd be nice to be able to change the
font size for that window. If that's an option right now, I
sure couldn't find it.

I've had the same problem with both setting the breakpoint and setting a
watch.

-Original Message-
From: Nick Cipollina [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm referring to when I set a breakpoint on a variable. I've also
noticed that if you have a breakpoint set on a line, and you hit a
subroutine before the breakpoint. It will blow right by that too.

For those of you on this list who are U2UG members, you should be
receiving
instructions for voting in this year's board election soon. Due to
technical difficulties (mostly caused by me), the election has been
delayed. Stay tuned!
