[U2] [UV] Error log
Hello all! I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. We're getting a number of errors in our errlog file that I'm trying to track down. It gives the program name and line number, but then says 'Message[##]' - and there are about 4 or 5 different 6-digit numbers (040058, 040024, etc.). Can you tell me which of the manuals has the message numbers in it so I can look them up and see what's going on? Thanks! What I would like is to have Universe send some sort of notification when an error occurs. Not exactly, but here are a few ideas: 1. Errors (fatal not) are recorded in $UVHOME/errlog. It's size is limited but configurable by uvconfig's MAXERRLOGENT. I have a phantom that continually polls this text file and populates my own structured hashed file generate reports emailed to me and others. 2. There is ON.ABORT paragraph available to you to handle fatal errors. I trap them and populate another file send emails. 3. On case by case basis, WRITE other basic statements likely to be implicated in errors allow for ON ERROR clauses. Search for ON ERROR in the documentation pdf. I have a utility purpose subroutine that I stick in places like these ON ERROR clauses. The subroutine allows a text argument to be sent from the calling program it also captures SYSTEM(9001) call stack info, then writes all that to a file, which is monitored. So far I haven't implemented an email from the subroutine, but probably should. cds --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/ --- u2-users mailing list u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/

Memo: Re: [U2] Uv Error
Hi Rudy, this is a real mystery then. Donning deer stalker hat and smoking pipe We had a problem once with the number of open files in the rotating file pool getting confused. As you probably know, you can open many more files in a Universe program then the os allows. Universe will only keep open, at the os level, the number of files specified by the MFILES config parameter, closing and opening files as needed. Providing your MFILES number is less than the os per process limit of open files, theoretically there should be no problem. However, we had a program that occasionally would fall over with a write failure when writing to a particular file. We eventually tracked it down to Universe not having re-opened the file at the os level. Looking at the open files that that process had open at the os level, it was clear that Universe was very confused about what was open and what wasnt (there were some files that were opened multiple times!). We increased the gap between the MFILES parameter and the os per process limit, and that fixed the problem. Or, as you say, the index file may be getting locked or renamed by some process. The question is, which process. I would be tempted to write a small program which attempts to open the file every 10 minutes or so, and logging the times when it failed to do so. This process could also take a snapshot of the running processes at the time of the failure. Maybe that would help in tracking down the problem. RE: Memo: Re: [U2] Uv Error
Now THIS is getting interesting! I saw something similar twice. Once a hashed file header was corrupted with a line that should have been written into a como file. Another when a file had data from uv/SYS.MESSAGE written in it. Both occurred in the context of a transaction logging failure. I've been a big fan of TxLg, but this unresolved issue has been a showstopper for me. TxLg is supposed to make a system more robust, but this reminds me of a time when the UPS crashed in a Miami thunderstorm and caused major damage for the client. I called my wife in Dallas that evening and told her I'd be late - 4 days late - for supper. The company allowed me to expense new socks and underwear, but not pants and shirt. RE: [U2] UV - Error with PAGE statement.
That's the default setting and I'd say is far too low for most systems (ours is currently 750). As a first rough setting you need to work out how many files the average session will have open and set MFILES to that (look at T30FILES as well if you have dynamic files). RE: [U2] UV - Error with PAGE statement.
Thanks for your suggestion Adrian. It indeed solved my problem. Carol. Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2005 12:50:11 - That's the default setting and I'd say is far too low for most systems (ours is currently 750). As a first rough setting you need to work out how many files the average session will have open and set MFILES to that (look at T30FILES as well if you have dynamic files). Search on www.indexinfocus.com to see previous postings regarding this. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Carolina Lizama Sent: 21 January 2005 12:03 To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: RE: [U2] UV - Error with PAGE statement. The last time this problem came up on the forum the general consensus was that the MFILES was set far too low. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Carolina Lizama Sent: 21 January 2005 10:07 To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: [U2] UV - Error with PAGE statement. I have the following error when running a Program on UV 9.6 / AIX 5.1 Program PRINT.CLI.DET: Line 322, Read operation failure. [EBADF] Bad file number A fatal error has occurred in UniVerse. Unable to re-open operating system file TEMP/PRINT.CLI.DET Error code 0 On line line 322, I have the PAGE statement. The PAGE statement is inside the PRINTER ON and OFF, and instead of directly printing to a Printer, I am diverting the output to TEMP which is a Type 19 file. One page of data is printed and when it tries to print the next page, the above-mentioned error appears. I have tried RESIZING the file to 1, back to 19. Deleted the File completely and created a new file. But still no luck! RE: [U2] UV Error.
I have been waiting for someone to respond to this. Unfortunately, I don't have an answer but it happened to me one day a few months ago on one of our client's system (but not the other 300 clients). I had never had that happen to me before, and I never got any feedback from our tech department. I just had to give up that debugging session!! Still hopefully waiting on some answer to this.
