Re: [U2] Alas .NET
From a message from Leroy Dreyfuss dated 08-30-2004 At our conference, you will receive plenty of information on the subject. You will get plenty of information, but you must order new copies of UniData 6.1 or Universe 10.1 to receive it. It is not a separate offering any more than the original UniObjects is. In fact, both are included on the client CD. UO.NET is bundled with the databases. - Original Message - From: Brutzman, Bill [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Hopp, Raymond [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 15, 2004 8:36 AM Subject: [U2] Alas .NET How bitter that Microsoft requires Win2k or better on the client side. RE: [U2] Alas .NET
djordan wrote: If Uniobjects .Net is a .Net assembley, then it should run anywhere that the .Net frame work runs as well as probably on the Linux version as well. We've had some discussions in comp.databases.pick about .NET-enabled MV tools running over Mono. I believe (though someone with more insight might correct me) that the current lot of components (UO.NET, PDP.NET, etc) will not run over Mono in Linux or in Windows unless the authors take the time to assemble the code over Mono (doesn't matter which platform). I'm a firm believer that Mono provides opportunities for all developers, MV and otherwise, that have been unreachable until now. I strongly encourage IBM and Raining Data to assemble and support their components over Mono, so that we can create rich thick and thin clients and other interfaces over *nix as easily as over Windows. This will open many sales opportunities that we simply do not have at the moment. That said, I don't know, but if UOJ clients can be deployed over *nix, or if *nix-based Java components (clients and middle tiers) can be implemented with WebSphere/RedBack - so the issue might be that people just aren't taking advantage of existing tools, and not that the tools aren't available. If UOJ/WebSphere/RedBack is the answer, then maybe the problem is just economics and too much in the middle. Any comments on that? Do I need to read the friendly manuals? Re: [U2] Alas .NET
this sounds like a confusion between development and client installations. I have to assume that the developers guide is referring to software requirements on development machines - which i suppose is IBM's client (?) and their reply seems to support this. there should be no uniobjects client requirements for anything other than the .Net Framework, if IBM has indeed made .Net development tools ( a very vague statement ) a prerequisute for uniobjects on client machines then that is purely an IBM/uniobjects.net issue, totally unrelated to microsoft .net - Original Message - From: Brutzman, Bill [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, September 15, 2004 11:09 am Subject: RE: [U2] Alas .NET I found it in UniObjects for .NET Developer's Guide, v6.1, June 2004, Chapter 4, page 4-3, Client Software Components. right , exactly what i just said - ASP.NET runs on a server which is irrelevant as far as the client is concerned. RE: [U2] Alas .NET
.Net is a frame work, similar to the UniVerse Virtial Machine for UniBasic. If I have a VB .Net application then I need the .Net Framework to run underneath it. If I am using ASP.Net then it is only required on the web server, not the web browser client. As far as I am aware the .Net framework is available for Win NT 4 and I think it is available for Windows 98, but Microsoft is aiming everybody to be running on the NT platform of some sort and no longer deal with the issues of the DOS related Win 95 Win 98. You can download the frameworks from the Microsoft site. If Uniobjects .Net is a .Net assembley, then it should run anywhere that the .Net frame work runs as well as probably on the Linux version as well.
