[UAI] AIStats 2009 Art Exhibition

2009-08-01 Thread AIStats 2009
Dear machine learning artists,

this is a reminder that you now have about a week to submit your works
of art to the AISTATS Art Exhibition, and and about 1.5 weeks until the
Exhibition itself. The submission site will not be closed, but your
entries should be in by April 12 if you want to be sure they will be
considered.

Marina Meila
and the team of AISTATS 2009 Art Expo Curators

http://www.ics.uci.edu/~aistats/artexpo.htm

-
Announcement: Exhibition of AISTATS ART
-

You are invited to visualize your favorite algorithm, by using it to create
an attractive image. The input data can be eiter: an image provided by us
(see the web url below) or an image of your choice.

You will
* run your favourite algorithm on this data, with any
preprocessing/postprocessing you want
* display the algorithm's output as an image
* give it a neat title (optional)
* send us the image + title
+ a one page description of how the image was
obtained

The goal is to produce both an artistic effect and, more importantly,
an interesting and surprising visualization of an algorithm. Think of
what would be catching in the eyes of your fellows AISTATS
participants. Do the unexpected! Avertise your own work! Anybody can
create a pretty image with Photoshop, but can you produce a neat
result with a causal discovery/preference elicitation/manifold
learning/reiforcement learning/fraud detection/information retrieval
algoritmm? Can you use this picture to highlight something about your
algorithm? Be creative, be as original as you can!

Entry is open to anyone somehow connected with AISTATS or with the
AISTATS topics of interest. The curator reserves the right to reject entries
they consider irrelevant or inappropriate. Please send your entry in a
widely used format that we can display easily (pdf, ps, jpeg,..). By
submitting an entry, you are giving the AISTATS chairs the implicit
permission to display your submission in connection with AISTATS.

Our intention is to exhibit all the submissions at the AISTATS 2009
conference and to let the participants judge their merits. After the
conference, the Exhibition will be hosted on the AISTATS web site. It
is NOT necessary to participate in the AISTATS conference in order to
submit an entry.

[UAI] NIPS 2009 Call For Mini-Symposia

2009-08-01 Thread Chris Hiestand

   CALL FOR MINI-SYMPOSIUM PROPOSALS

Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) -- Natural and Synthetic
  NIPS*2009 Mini-symposia
 December 10, 2009
Hyatt Regency Hotel, Vancouver, BC, CANADA

http://nips.cc/

Following the regular program of the Neural Information Processing
Systems
2009 conference in Vancouver, BC, Canada, up to four mini-symposia
will be

held in parallel during the afternoon of December 10, 2009, in the Hyatt
Regency, Vancouver, BC, Canada. We invite researchers interested in
chairing a mini-symposium to submit proposals.

The goal of the mini-symposia is to present topical material on a single
theme, well suited to the main conference audience. Controversial
issues,

emerging topics, open problems, and comparisons of competing approaches
are not only encouraged but preferred as symposium topics.
Representation

of alternative viewpoints are also particularly encouraged. Possible
topics for symposia include, but are not limited to:

Active Learning, Attention, Audition, Bayesian Networks, Bayesian
Statistics, Benchmarking, Biophysics, Brain-Machine Interfaces, Brain
Imaging, Cognitive Neuroscience, Computational Biology and
Bioinformatics,
Computational Complexity, Control and Reinforcement Learning, Data
Mining,

Game Theory, Graphical Models, Hippocampus and Memory, Human-Computer
Interfaces, Independent Component Analysis, Information Theory, Kernel
Methods, Large Scale Implementations and Software, Learning Theory,
Mean-Field Methods, Mechanism Design, Music, Network Dynamics, Neural
Coding, Neural Plasticity, Neuromorphic Systems, Nonparametric Models,
On-Line Learning, Optimization, Randomized Algorithms, Robotics, Rule
Extraction, Self-Organization, Signal Processing, Spike Timing, Speech,
Statistical Inference, Unsupervised Learning and Information Extraction,
Time Series, Vision and Scene Understanding.

Each of the four mini-symposia will run for three hours in the afternoon
of December 10 after the end of the main conference. Organizers may
consider proposing a mini-symposium in conjunction with a one- or two-
day

workshop proposed to be held subsequently in Whistler. In such a case
proposers should take into account the more polished nature of the
symposium, and, as the attendees might differ, should ensure that each
stands alone programmatically.

Detailed descriptions of previous symposia and workshops can be found at
http://nips.cc/Conferences/2008/. We encourage neuroscience-related
proposals, and are especially interested in those bridging areas of
neuroscience and machine learning. Selected mini-symposia may be
invited

to submit proceedings for publication in the post-NIPS workshops
monographs series published by the MIT Press.

More details and instructions for submission of proposals may be found
online at http://nips.cc/Conferences/2009/CallForMiniSymposia.
Proposals

must be received by August 28, 2009.

## INTRODUCTION ##
##

The ECAI-2010 Programme Committee invites the submission of papers and
posters for the technical programme of the nineteenth biennial
European Conference on Artificial Intelligence.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a central topic in contemporary
computer science and informatics. The fruits of fifty years of AI
research have benefited application domains as disparate as industrial
systems control and medicine. The milestone events in AI research are
increasingly regarded as milestones in human scientific and
technological development: from the first chess playing program to
defeat a reigning world champion under standard chess tournament
rules, to the first robot to autonomously traverse 150 miles of rough
terrain. Techniques, results, and concepts developed under the banner
of AI research have proved to be of fundamental importance in areas
such as economics, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, and logical
analysis. And of course, AI remains a topic of perennial fascination
in popular culture.

Initiated in 1974, the biennial European Conference on Artificial
Intelligence (ECAI) is Europe's premier archival venue for presenting
scientific results in AI. Organised by the European Coordinating
Committee for AI (ECCAI), the ECAI conference provides an opportunity
for researchers to present and hear about the very best research in
contemporary AI. As well as a full programme of technical papers,
ECAI-2010 will include the Prestigious Applications of Intelligent
Systems conference (PAIS), the Starting AI Researcher Symposium
(STAIRS), and an extensive programme of workshops, tutorials, and
invited speakers. (Separate calls are issued for PAIS, STAIRS, and
workshops.)

ECAI-2010 will be held in the beautiful and historic city of Lisbon,
Portugal. With excellent opportunities for sightseeing and gastronomy,
Lisbon promises to be a wonderful venue for a memorable conference.

Waterloo, Ontario, Canada)

Expanded and latest information: http://www.cse.yorku.ca/AAMAS2010/

INTRODUCTION

AAMAS is the leading scientific conference for research in autonomous
agents and multiagent systems. The AAMAS conference series was
initiated in 2002 by merging three highly-respected meetings: International
Conference on Multi-Agent Systems (ICMAS); International Workshop on
Agent Theories, Architectures, and Languages (ATAL); and International
Conference on Autonomous Agents (AA). The aim of the joint conference
is to provide a single, high-profile, internationally-respected
archival forum for scientific research in the theory and practice of
autonomous agents and multiagent systems. AAMAS-2010 is the Ninth
conference in the AAMAS series, following enormously successful
previous conferences, and will be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto
Hotel in downtown Toronto. See http://www.ifaamas.org for more
information on the AAMAS conference series.

SUBMISSION DETAILS

AAMAS-2010 seeks high-quality submissions of full papers, limited to 8
pages in length. Submissions will be rigorously peer reviewed and
evaluated on the basis of originality, soundness, significance,
presentation, understanding of the state of the art, and overall
quality of their technical contribution. Reviews will be double blind;
authors must avoid including anything that can be used to identify
them. Where submission is for full (8 page) papers only, in some
cases they may be accepted as 2 page extended abstracts For formatting
instructions, please refer to the conference page.

In addition to submissions in the main track, AAMAS is soliciting
papers in two special tracks on robotics, and on virtual agents (see
below). The review process for the special tracks will be the same as
for the main track, but with specially-selected program committee
members.

Special Track on Robotics (Chair: Michael Beetz):
Papers on theory and applications concerning single and multiple
robots will be welcome, namely those focusing on real robots
interacting with their surrounding environments. The goal is to foster
interaction between researchers on agent and robotics systems, so as
to provide a cradle for cross-fertilization of concepts from both
fields.

Special Track on Virtual Agents (Chair: Stacy Marsella):
Virtual agents are embodied agents in interactive virtual or physical
environments that emulate human-like behavior. We encourage papers on
the design, implementation, and evaluation of virtual agents as well
as challenging applications featuring them. The goal is to provide an
opportunity for interaction and cross-fertilization between the AAMAS
community and researchers working on virtual agents and to strengthen
links between the two communities.

In addition to the conference papers, presented in parallel
technical sessions, AAMAS-2010 will include:
   o Industry and Applications track
   o Demonstrations
o Posters presentations for full papers and extended abstracts
o Invited talks and panel discussions

The submission processes for the demonstration and industry tracks are
separate from the main paper submission process.

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

General Chairs: Michael Luck and Sandip Sen

[UAI] Second Call for Papers: PADL'10, Madrid, January 2010

2009-08-01 Thread Manuel Carro

[We apologize in advance for duplicate reception]
[Please redistribute as appropriate]

   CALL FOR PAPERS

 Twelfth International Symposium on
Practical Aspects of Declarative Languages 2010
  (PADL'10)

   http://clip.dia.fi.upm.es/Conferences/PADL-2010

Madrid, Spain
 January 18-19, 2010

 Co-located with ACM POPL'10

Declarative languages build on sound theoretical bases to provide
attractive frameworks for application development. These languages
have been successfully applied to many different real-world
situations, ranging from data base management to active networks to
software engineering to decision support systems.

New developments in theory and implementation have opened up new
application areas. At the same time, applications of declarative
languages to novel problems raise numerous interesting research
issues. Well-known questions include designing for scalability,
language extensions for application deployment, and programming
environments. Thus, applications drive the progress in the theory and
implementation of declarative systems, and benefit from this progress
as well.

PADL is a forum for researchers and practitioners to present original
work emphasizing novel applications and implementation techniques for
all forms of declarative concepts, including, functional, logic,
constraints, etc. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

* Innovative applications of declarative languages.
* Declarative domain-specific languages and applications.
* Practical applications of theoretical results.
* New language developments and their impact on applications.
* Declarative languages and Software Engineering.
* Evaluation of implementation techniques on practical applications.
* Practical experiences and industrial applications.
* Novel uses of declarative languages in the classroom.

[UAI] Final CFP: ISWC'09 workshop on Ontology Matching (OM-2009)

2009-08-01 Thread Pavel Shvaiko
Apologies for cross-postings

FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS:
submission deadline is approaching: 15 days left

   The Fourth International Workshop on
ONTOLOGY MATCHING
(OM-2009)
   http://om2009.ontologymatching.org/
October 25, 2009, ISWC'09 Workshop Program, Chantilly, near Washington DC., USA

BRIEF DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVES
Ontology matching is a key interoperability enabler for the Semantic Web,
as well as a useful tactic in some classical data integration tasks.
It takes the ontologies as input and determines as output an alignment,
that is, a set of correspondences between the semantically
related entities of those ontologies. These correspondences can be used
for various tasks, such as ontology merging and data translation.
Thus, matching ontologies enables the knowledge and data expressed
in the matched ontologies to interoperate.

The workshop has three goals:
1. To bring together leaders from academia, industry and user institutions
to assess how academic advances are addressing real-world requirements.
The workshop will strive to improve academic awareness of industrial
and final user needs, and therefore, direct research towards those needs.
Simultaneously, the workshop will serve to inform industry and user
representatives about existing research efforts that may meet their
requirements. The workshop will also investigate how the ontology
matching technology is going to evolve.

2. To conduct an extensive and rigorous evaluation of ontology matching
approaches through the OAEI (Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative)
2009 campaign: http://oaei.ontologymatching.org/2009/
This year's OAEI campaign introduces two new tracks about
oriented alignments and about instance matching (a timely topic for
the linked data community). Therefore, the ontology matching evaluation
initiative itself will provide a solid ground for discussion of how well
the current approaches are meeting business needs.

3. To examine similarities and differences from database schema matching,
which has received decades of attention but is just beginning to transition
to mainstream tools.

TOPICS of interest include but are not limited to:
Business cases for matching;
Requirements to matching from specific domains;
Application of matching techniques in real-world scenarios;
Formal foundations and frameworks for ontology matching;
Large-scale ontology matching evaluation;
Performance of matching techniques;
Matcher selection and self-configuration;
Uncertainty in ontology matching;
User involvement (including both technical and organizational aspects);
Explanations in matching;
Social and collaborative matching;
Alignment management;
Reasoning with alignments;
Matching for traditional applications (e.g., information integration);
Matching for dynamic applications (e.g., peer-to-peer, web-services).

SUBMISSIONS
Contributions to the workshop can be made in terms of technical papers and
posters/statements of interest addressing different issues of ontology matching
as well as participating in the OAEI 2009 campaign. Technical papers should
be not longer than 12 pages using the LNCS Style:
http://www.springeronline.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,5-164-2-72376-0,00.html
Posters/statements of interest should not exceed 2 pages and
should be handled according to the guidelines for technical papers.
All contributions should be prepared in PDF format and should be submitted
through the workshop submission site at:

http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=om20090

Contributors to the OAEI 2009 campaign have to follow the campaign conditions
and schedule at http://oaei.ontologymatching.org/2009/.

The Nineteenth European Conference on Artificial Intelligence

16-20 August 2010 ## Lisbon, Portugal

http://ecai2010.appia.pt/

Deadline for workshop proposals: 11 December 2009

##
## INTRODUCTION ##
##

The nineteenth biennial European Conference on Artificial Intelligence
(ECAI-2010) will take place on 16-10 August 2010 in Lisbon, Portugal.
We invite proposals for workshops to be held during the first two days
of the conference.

ECAI-2010 will be held in the beautiful and historic city of Lisbon,
Portugal. With excellent opportunities for sightseeing and gastronomy,
Lisbon promises to be a wonderful venue for a memorable conference.

##
## WORKSHOPS @ ECAI-2010##
##

Workshop proposals by all members of the international AI community
are welcome. There is no restriction regarding topics, as long as
there is clear relevance to ECAI. Most workshops will follow the
classical format of presentations of peer-reviewed papers followed by
discussion, but other formats (e.g., AI competitions) and entirely new
ideas are also welcome. Whatever the format, all workshops should be
interactive events and ample time should be allocated to discussion.
The typical duration for a workshop is one full day, but two-day
workshops can also be accommodated.

If you are considering to propose a workshop or if you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the ECAI-2010
Workshop Chair, Ulle Endriss (ulle.endr...@uva.nl).
