ORCA Through A USB Device?

2007-04-28 Thread Mia Lipner
Hello,

I'll try asking this again. (Though the lack of responsiveness of this
list and the ubuntu accessibility forums is quite discouraging.)

I tried running the Ubuntu Live CD -- it was the one handed out at CSUN, so
I think it was 6.1). Because of some issues with my laptop, I run all sound
through a USB Imic2. We could get Ubuntu itself to recognize the device,
and send sound there, but we couldn't find a way to get speech to go there.
The Orca preferences were up and visible so Orca was running, but no speech
came through the headphones no matter what we tried.

So can Orca output to a USB device?
Is it possible in the version that shipped with Feisty?

If it can't be done, then I won't be running Ubuntu on my laptop.

If this is not the appropriate place to ask, let me know what is. And if
this is a bug, let me know where to file.

firefox

2007-04-28 Thread mike coulombe
Hi, how do you go to a site in firefox.
I tab to a search and type in a site,
but get a bunch of other stuff.
I'm sure I just don't know the shortcut key for this.
One other question, I got the orca source but autogen doesn't seem to do
anything.
Is this suppose to be the first step to build a install.
Mike.

RE: ORCA Through A USB Device?

2007-04-28 Thread Mia Lipner
Thanks for replying! Yes. We couldn't find a way to get speech to redirect
to the USB device, even though the Imic did show up in the device list.

All we got was what sounded like a sine-wave.

 Hi Mia.

It was actually a Feisty Herd 5 CD. Feisty has since been
officially released and you can get a live CD from
 http://releases.ubuntu.com/feisty/

So can Orca output to a USB device?

I've never tried this as I do not have such a device. Sorry!
However, the question I assume is really how does one get
gnome-speech to use an alternative device? Hopefully someone
 here knows the answer.

Hi all, what is the best way to install firefox 3 in Ubuntu 7.04? I
have tomorrow off, so I'd really like to get orca running a little
with speech-dispatcher, and install firefox 3, so I can play around
with it. Thanks a bunch for any help.

Re: installing ubuntu 7.4 with speech

2007-04-28 Thread Guy Schlosser
Hey there Christian, maybe you or someone on the list can answer a
question for me. Why is it that when I go into something like
network administration from the applications menu, I lose speech? Is
there a way to keep my speech in these apps? As with before, any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Guy

Hi Keith,
I have just installed Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty myself and here is what you
have to do.
Boot the CD and press F5 and then 3 and enter twice to boot with Orca.
When you get speech do the following
1. Press Alt+F2 to get into the Run Application dialog
2. Type gnome-terminal and press Enter.
3. In the resulting Terminal window, type sudo su and press Enter.
You should hear
root at ubuntu colon slash home slash ubuntu pound.
4. Press Insert Q to quit Orca. At this point, the Orca quit
confirmation dialog will
appear. You need to tab to the Yes button and press Space. At this
point, you will
have no speech, but focus is still in the terminal window.
Type orca --no-setup --disable main-window and press Enter. This
will cause speech
to resume, but Orca will now be running as root (the equivalent of
Administrator
in Windows).
6. Type ubiquity and press Enter.
These instructions can be found with more info at:
http://live.gnome.org/Orca/UbuntuFeisty
And yes when the installation is finished and you have logged in you
will get speech.
Hope it helps!
All the best,
Christian

 Hi All

Just joined this list in the hope of some help.

I have the 7.4 ubuntu but am loosing speech when I try to install.

The only instructions I can find relate to previous versions so perhaps
 this is
 where I am going wrong.
I boot the system and select f5 3 and a couple of returns. I eventually
 get
speech and I land in the orca preferences although the instructions tell
 me I
will need to use alt tabb to get there.

Not sure how I am meant to leave the preferences as the instructions
mention a close button. I am not finding one and tabbing gives me an ok
or preferences button. Hitting enter on ok does not seem to have any
 affect.

At this point, continuing with the instructions, I get as far as typing
 sudo su
and quitting and restarting orca. When I type ubiquity I loose speech
 totally.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what may be happening or
any instructions that relate to this version?

Also, as I have spent several days at this, if I get some assistance and
 get
ubuntu installed, can I reinstate speech after the install and get it to
 start
 with speech enabelled?

Also, if any one has got this to work, are these speech losses just
happening around the install or is stability an issue when performing
 tasks
 e.t.c.

Sorry for the questions but am new at this.

 Many thanks

 Keith Barrett

I have the same problem. My volume is too low, and I cannot hear
system sounds or play music files. If you figure it out, please let
me know. :)

Thanks,

Guy

speech-dispatcher

Hi, when looking I didn't see speech-dispatcher in the orca settings.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it,
and got the following message when it was done.
Failed to start.
Any ideas Mike.

speech

2007-04-28 Thread mike coulombe
Hi, I found the problem with speech-dispatcher.
I set default volume to 150.
That didn't work.
Setting it back to 100 fixed the not starting problem,
but the speech is still quiet.
So I need the correct line to edit.
This file looks different than the one I edited before.
