Re: retrieving synthesized auio data?

hello Bill,
Here is my answer for those not subscribed to speechd mailinglist.

hi Jacob and Luke,

@Jacob do you need the audio data for further processing?
Or do you need only creating wave files from the synthesized text?

Maybe a good start is to add a dummy audio output driver in speechd
which writes it's
output data into a fifo or better directly to a wave file.
This wouldn't need any api work and could be implemented (in my
opinion) really fast and without much work!

a system service for those who want it, and for the ever changing
 multi-user desktop environment.

Consider making pulse optional for ubuntu will solve this problem without
any new line code.

One such idea I have, is to consider
dbus as a client/server communication transport layer. This could even
go so far as to solve the issue of using system level clients like
BrlTTY with a system level speech-dispatcher, which would then
communicate with a user level speech-dispatcher for example.

Luke! It's only an issue because you and other prefer the wrong audio
system. i hope one day you start thinking about other stuff to do for
speech-dispatcher than the . user session integration.

The decision to use pulseaudio (only) for ubuntu produced tons of mails from
many unhappy users in orca/speechd/ubuntu accessibility mailinglists.
Allmost every day some people asking howto use sd as system service etc.
BTW.: it works really well this way!

Starting paralel process and let them communicate through dbus will add
more and more and more overhead to speechd and it's deppendencies.
And it will only produce new issues without bringing really new
features instead of complexity.

Many other audio apps needs to be rewritten to be compatible with this
new approach. Thx to PA for this.
Just wondering: Are you using these system level apps like
speakup/brltty for your daily work?

Just my two cents.

Halim
PS.: it doesn't make sense to ignore the user wishes in this area.
Read the mailinglists and talk with the people who are not able to use
pulse with speechd.
Talk also with other a11y projects and speechd users if they want dbus
dependency or dealing with consolekit and possibly other kits.

Wrong audfio system?

2010-02-05 Thread Thomas Lloyd
:D I have seen a mention of my project by someone who matters. Thanks
Luke even if it was in passing. At least someone knows about it.

The point of progress is mean to improve the overall experience for
users of any system but there is always a time where some users do not
see all the benefits immediately of an improved system. I think this is
the case of PA. Its time will come for the accessibility field. If it
was not forced then coders would sit back and say just din't use it. By
being a bit forceful Ubuntu is making the rest of he community keep up
with them which is not a bad thing. It just annoys some of us.

As far as openSAPI is concerned it already supports wav file output in
differing formats out of the box. I am also not adverse to a bit of hard
work when it comes to integration into a system, heck I have done a bit
of hard work already. But we all prefer an easier life.

Keep up the good work all,

Tom

Draft Willie for Ubuntu Accessibility

2010-02-05 Thread Bill Cox
I don't need to introduce Willie on this forum. If you don't know him
and some of his work, you're not involved. Willie is looking for a
new job as the result of the Oracle/Sun merger. I've said before that
Ubuntu could own the accessibility space with one more full time guy.
If that guy is Willie, he'll prove me right.

I don't know the situation at Canonical, but getting Willie roped in
would be super-huge. RedHat would do great with Willie as well, but
I'd rather see his skills go to Ubuntu first, and let Fedora get his
work downstream from Ubuntu.

Anyone interested in forming a Draft Willie campaign?

Bill

2010-02-05 Thread Kenny Hitt
Hi. You are a sighted person who doesn't get it.
If you were forced to use an app that turned off your monitor regularly and
wouldn't let it work outside of a gnome session,
you wouldn't put up with it for a minute. Why do you think it is ok for me to
accept such a situation?
That's pulseaudio for a blind person running a screen reader. Fix it first
before forcing it on the world!

Re: Draft Willie for Ubuntu Accessibility

2010-02-05 Thread Pia
Willie, check out LWN. You are an awesome coder and we all deeply and
sincerely appreciate the work you have done at Sun on Orca. I am sad to
hear you are one of the ones who lost their job as a result of the merger.
The reason I say check out LWN http://lwn.net is because they have an
article today talking about Mozilla donating $10,000 to Gnome for
accessibility. Maybe you could even get on at Mozilla? Just a thought,
but they seem to care about and have a stake in Orca and accessibility on
the Linux desktop.

Kind regards and you are in my prayers!

Pia
