Re: definitely impressed
Hy Luke, The LightDM replacement to Gdm is very interesting me too. How can possible doing this replacement for an Oneiric installed system if the purpose is working default the a11y support with screen reader in GDM? My friend sees following error when he trying replace LightDm to Gdm and try setting A11y properties with Gdm in terminal, he using following command: root@ubuntu:/# sudo -u gdm gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications screen-reader-enabled true ** (process:4488): WARNING **: Command line `dbus-launch --autolaunch=20fabca28cb849c3142b381e02746da0 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n ** (process:4488): WARNING **: Command line `dbus-launch --autolaunch=20fabca28cb849c3142b381e02746da0 --binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: No protocol specified\nAutolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n root@ubuntu:/# He tryed using this command an installed Oneiric system. Possible doing this replacement by default a custom live CD if I would like automatic login working too? If I remember right, when I looked this with alpha3 based live CD, GDM wont start automaticaly with live CD, and I not tryed this replacement now. I see an another interesting issue with Oneiric and Unity related: General, I using Oneiric with Gnome Fallback session, but I would like trying Unity 2D after I read Guis letter. Because I am not have sighted assistance to change session in LightDm, I edited the /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf file: I uncommented following line: greeter-session=unity-greeter And modify following line: user-session=gnome-fallback I simple replaced with gnome-fallback session to ubuntu-2d session, and restarted lightdm login manager with service lightdm restart command. My system are I configured for automatic login, and Unity 2D wonderful started. I tested little with Unity, and final would like switch back with gnome-fallback session. So I again modify /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf fileto I change back the session... :-(:-( After I restarted LightDm, I very surprised, because simple owerwritten or deleted my custom keybindings, with I defined in GNOME Control Center the Keyboard pane when I used GNOME Fallback session. For example, not possible to pop up panel menue with ALT+F1 key combination, not possible to access Run dialog, etc. Why happened this? Unity stores own key combinations equals place for example with GNOME3 fallback session (.config/dconf/user binary gsettings file)? Possible fix this with next release? Have an useful workaround to prewent this problem if an user would like using not only Unity dependent sessions and already customized for example GNOME3 fallback session related keybindings? For Vinux based on oneiric, gdm will be used instead, where accessibility will be working. I do have one further question with Oneiric though. BTW Luke, thanks for the quick reply, and maybe you can answer this one too. Is there any way to make a sound play once the lightdm screen appears? I almost have to put my laptop to my ear and listen for the hard drive to stop spinning, in order to know when I can type my password. If there is a simple work around, I would greatly appreciate it. The only problem I'm having though, is that when a notification comes up, all orca seems to say is notify_osd. This may be a known bug, but hopefully will be fixed by final release. Keep up the good work, and just as a heads up, Unity 4.22 is in today's updates. Will the extra-a11y ppa be updated soon? Here's hoping I don't lose dash and alt+tab support on next reboot. The notifications no longer working is a known bug, and likely won't be fixed by final release. However, I do hope I can get it fixed in a stable release update, as its a complex issue to fix. Re: Ubuntu 11.10, Unity, and Compiz eZoom
Hello again. I was unsure as to whether or not I should create a new thread or follow-up on this one, so I decided to play it safe and follow-up. I installed gnome-shell in my virtual machine (Ubuntu 11.10). At the login screen, I was presented with session options for GNOME, Classic GNOME, Classic GNOME (No Effects), Ubuntu, and Ubuntu2D. it seems that I cannot use screen magnification in GNOME or Classic GNOME. It did not even seem as though Compiz was running (I am not sure how to confirm this). However, when I run "compiz --replace" in the Run Applications dialog, the Unity dock appears and zooming seems to work (with the exception of the Unity dock). I'm a bit distraught as I have no idea what to do. Thanks for any suggestions and input. On 10/05/2011 12:36 PM, Robert Cole wrote: Hello, everyone. I know that the needs of all users cannot always be met at first, and I am appreciative of all of the hard work which is being put into Unity, but I'm feeling left out right now. :( Sorry. I don't mean to whine or to complain. Hopefully this will change in Ubuntu 12.04, or better yet in an update to Ubuntu 11.10. I just wanted to write back and to confirm that this still persists in case there is anyone else out there who was curious.
