Re: compiling orca error package atk-bridge not found

2020-08-24 Thread Jeremy Lincicome

Pavel,

I ran into the same problem on an Ubuntu-20.04 64bit machine.

The way I fixed it was to run:

sudo apt install libatk1.0-dev

libatk and its development package don't use matching version numbers in
Ubuntu; Not sure why.

Good luck, and hope this helps.

Jeremy

You need to install the full espeak engine.

In a terminal, type:

sudo apt install espeak

After espeak is installed, Kodi should come up talking.

Re: Kodi

Glenn,

To use Kodi on any platform, including Ubuntu, You need the Kodi Screen
Reader add-on. You can find information for the add-on at:

http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=196757

I'm running Kodi on the Openelec opporating system on a raspberry pi2
with no problems. The advantage to Openelec is it includes espeak by
default. If you use something like OSMC, you will need sighted
assistance to set it up. Also with OSMC, you will need to ssh into the
box and install espeak manually.

If you would like assistance setting it up, email me off list.

Re: Chirp Software

2016-08-12 Thread Jeremy Lincicome

Glen,

You need to add your user to the dialout group.

To do this do the following:

1. Open gnome-terminal

2. Type:

sudo adduser your_user_name dialout

Replace your_user_name with your actual user name.

3. Reboot

Chirp should work normally.

If you installed Chirp from ubuntu-software, you will want to remove
that version, and install the Chirp PPA. The version in ubuntu-software
is out of date.

The Chirp website is located at:

I hope this helps.

Re: gnome desktop in 14.04 inaccessible?

2014-08-23 Thread Jeremy Lincicome

Tony,
The desktop that comes with ubuntu-gnome-desktop is called gnome-shell.
Gnome-shell doesn't have an applications menu like you're used to. When
you press alt f1, you are taken to an overview of the windows that you
have open. To see your list of applications after pressing alt f1, press
control alt tab until you hear dash. When the dash is open, you can use
your arrow keys to navigate your list of applications. If you press
control alt tab without pressing alt f1 first, you will find an item
called the top bar. The top bar replaces the old gnome-2 panels. You can
navigate the top bar with the tab key and the arrow keys. Some of the
menus on the top bar are sub-menus. To get out of a sub-menu and return
to the top bar, press escape. I hope this helps you to better navigate
your desktop. If you have anymore questions, feel free to contact me,
either on the list or at my email address.

Routing Orca's focus to mouse pointer

2012-04-26 Thread Jeremy Lincicome

Hi list,
I am helping a new user to set up his Ubuntu box, and I was wondering if
there is a shortcut to route Orca to where the mouse pointer currently
is. The user is looking for a read from pointer type feature, whereby
Orca reads from the current location such as a block of text. This would
be the reverse of routing the mouse to where Orca is currently. If there
are any partially sighted users who understand what the user is trying
to accomplish, please respond with any workarounds.

Thanks,

Hi,

In a Unity-2d session, Open a page in Firefox, and try using, for
instance,
'alt+b' for your bookmarks. When I do this, Orca delays, then says
"bookmarks label", but does not allow the menu to be pulled down.
Firefox returns, shortly, as if I'd closed the menus without making any
choices. When I use Firefox in gnome-fallback, this does not happen.
Furthermore, I cannot make this happen in other apps. In other Firefox
menus, it happens, sometimes; it seems to always happen in the
'bookmarks'
menu.

Empathy uses system's notifications to anounce incoming events.
Sometimes I am missing these notifications because I am usually

I am unable to get the details about a contact in my list. Empathy

In the context menu for each contact in the list there is an item saying

Tom,
In the folder that you want to show as a list, press control 2. You can
make this system wide by going to the edit menu and clicking on
preferences. In the preferences window, you will find (in the view tab)
a combo box labeled "show as." You can then expand that combo box and
choose list.

Hope this helps,
Jeremy
