Re: [ubuntu-art] Wiki reorganisation in progress

2006-06-20 Thread Étienne Bersac
An easy task that everybody is able to do is to switch old page to the
new template

In Artwork/ namespace, if you visit a page that do not have the artwork
team logo right to the table of content,

 1. edit it
 2. cut content (after toc to before subpages)
 3. add "&template=Artwork/PageTemplate" to the url
 4. go that url
 5. and paste the content in place of the default content
 6. then save changes.

Thanks.

[ubuntu-art] Wiki reorganisation in progress

2006-06-20 Thread Étienne Bersac
Hello,

Today i did a lot of deep changes in our Wiki. I added a lot of pages
and redirect old pages the new one.

There are some problematic pages :

  * ArtworkTeam/Meetings and ArtworkTeam/Meetings/Agenda have a big
semantic problem. Agenda must be the list of upcoming meetings
and events. Agenda must be a kind of calendar. Not a mailing
list digest. I don't know what to do with that pages (else than
just droping them). Meetings are globaly well handled. No need
to do our own archive, and so on.
  * Artwork/Documentation/Howtos/InlineColorSwatch and
ArtworkTeam/Drafts/EdgyColourProposals/Howto are really strange.
I don't know how to handle that pages. Should them be specs ???

Any help to build Review of previews artwork is wellcome. Use qemu and
write new archive page following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Archives guidelines. That would be nice
to describe deeply the artwork of a release in Artwork/Archives/X.Y and
put screenshots in Artwork/Archives/X.Y/*buntu .

[ubuntu-art] Icon discussion

2006-06-20 Thread Michiel Sikma
Let's open up this discussion again with Edgy in mind. There are
currently two viable sets that can be used: the Human set and the
Tangerine/Tango set.

The Human set was used in Dapper with Tango being an optional choice.
A lot of discussion preceded this choice. We must ask ourselves: what
are the rationale for usage of either icon theme? What are the pros
and cons of Human and Tangerine/Tango?

Comparison of the icon styles:

http://xoomer.alice.it/bat/orango-tango/side-by-side.png

It's true that both of the icon sets are very good indeed and
definitely worthy of being a default icon set, quality-wise, and this
is what makes it difficult to make a choice. Let's decide for
ourselves what we feel are the advantages and disadvantages would be:

(Note: this is an incomplete list; send mails to suggest other reasons.)

Advantages of Human:
- Original icon theme
- Ubuntu is the only distro to use the Human icons (thus far)
- Created with the Ubuntu distro feeling and visual representation in
mind

Advantages of Tangerine/Tango:
- Tango is rapidly gaining popularity; Tangerine ensures consistency
with future non-Ubuntu applications and icons

- SVG versions of every icon are available
- Arguably developed using a more open process
- Strictly follows a set of standards and guidelines

There are some things I'm unsure of about Human. I feel as though its
development is mostly closed due to it being created by a
professional team, but if I'm wrong about this, then please notify me
how one could contribute to the Human theme.

This discussion is meant for brainstorming material for Edgy.

Your work is useful. Especially if we want to provide a common wallpaper
for all *buntus. The problem is : Do all *buntus artwork team want a
common wallpaper. How to handle logo ?

You know what would be sweet... Illustrator has that new-ish feature
where you can genereate an artwork template and then have it create
variations of the artwork based on a database...

What would be cool is to create the artwork in such a way that you
could then create a make file and then feed in a color pallette and
have it generate/regerate the artwork for each distro based on the
colors in the pallette.

make ubuntu
make edubuntu
make xubuntu
make kubuntu

I gave it a try by making an icon in Inkscape and using an
alpha-transparent png; from a technical perspective, this is possible.

It took longer than I had expected so I don't have a formal proof of
concept to show, but if people think this is interesting I will
complete my test and make something that can be experimented with by
others.

The cool thing about using SVG is that it is very easy to replace
colors. I simply did a "find and replace" but a more elegant and
possibly reliable solution would be to transform it using XSL which is
quite easy.

I'll admit that in the real world this may not be practical because it
is non-trivial to do more than replace exact colors. Does anyone see
this as being useful?

I think that it would be a good idea to schedule an improvement drive
for this font. It's the Ubuntu title font, afterall, and used in the
official logo. Any improvements must be carefully considered. I've
opened a spec for it here: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/

No, we are not switching to the Tango palette, so it would be
awesome to have the official Ubuntu Human palette in there!

That shouldn't be too difficult to achieve. Simply use this as base:

OK. I guess you don't agree with me, not everyone will. Keep in mind
the screenshot only has 4 icons and many others such as the pointing
hand have more obvious improvements.

Though I'm a HUGE fan of jammac's icons in general the cursors are just
not my favorite anymore. At first I almost didn't try Polar because,
like you mentioned, they are a bit different both in size and appearance
but I'm glad I did. Within 5 mins I realized they offer a sharpness and
crispness that no other cursor set has been able to convey. Instead of
having less control, *I feel* I have more. To me that is the ultimate
test of a cursor.

Now I've been using these for about a year and going back to the
perfectly OK jimmac cursors seems a bit awkward due to the smaller than
optimal size, which is important on large displays, and their rather
flat appearance. Of course, ymmv, but there you have my experience.
