[ubuntu-art] PROGRAM: XaraLX
Thanks to Ken for pointing this app out to me! If you haven't already found this program, you should probably do yourself a favour and check it out. It has recently migrated to open source, so it deserves some attention. http://www.xaraxtreme.org/ If you download the precompiled binaries, you should be good to go out of the gate with Dapper on i386 distros. It is a very good vector drawing tool. Unfortunately, as of now, it doesn't support native SVG exporting / importing, but it is headed that way. I believe you should still be able to accomplish this by exporting to a format that Inkscape can read, then import via Inkscape. Roundabout, but it will work until native SVG is supported when 1.0 is officially released. They are making _rapid_ development on it, and it is a very good program. Now for the sad news. Even though this application is open source, getting it to compile on your lovely amd64 machine won't happen because of a wxWidgets issue. To this end, I have (quickly) typed up a howto if you still want to work with this program: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/XaraLXHowTo_amd64 signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
[ubuntu-art] Starting the Theme Team application process
Hello fellow artists, The time has come to properly announce the start of the theme team application process. It's an entirely new phenomenon so I will take the time to describe what it is and why you should take notice. At the moment we're working full force on getting ideas in for the upcoming Human look in Edgy. This is going well, but there's a lot of good theme ideas which do not readily fit in the guidelines we've already set out for Edgy's Human look. Theme ideas that come to mind are Tropic, recently proposed by Viper550, and Outdoors which was included in Dapper. These extra themes all have a distinct direction and look to them and it would be great if we can offer them to the end user in Edgy. Note that these themes are created and developed for use in Ubuntu, I'm not talking about "external" themes. To make the process of adding such co-developed themes as smooth as possible we need to establish a solid communication between the theme developers and the official Ubuntu side of things. This basically means that the theme developers can find a helping hand in me and Kenneth to get their themes polished, packaged and included in Edgy; we'll be here to help and assist you. The first step in getting towards that goal is identifying the interest for developing themes. I want to create a list with Ubuntu themes, including a lead development contact and what artwork parts of the operating system the theme will provide. Each theme will have its own "theme team" that way. What I want to ask you now is to drop in on this discussion, either privately or via the list, if you want to develop and maintain a theme for Edgy and want to use the assistance we can offer. Please take the time to supply the following information: - your full name (you will be listed as the main contact for the theme) - your e-mail address - the name of the theme, alongside a short description - a list of which artwork part(s) the theme will provide: - GDM theme - login splash - desktop wallpaper - GTK theme - window borders - icon set Applications are accepted up until the 13th of July, 2006. I've added this date to the Edgy artwork plan Wiki page, alongside the final deadline for theme team's work, which is now set at the 24th of August, 2006: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan One last thing I wanted to say is that a theme team has a lot of freedom to approach their artwork the way they see fit. The mailing list, Kenneth and I can provide assistance and guidance when desired, but in the end it's the team's theme. Once your applications are in, I will discuss the details like communication, licensing and Art Council matters with the lead developers of each theme. I'm looking forward to your applications and feedback. With kind regards, Frank Schoep -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

For Edgy, the main focus is to deliver a slick and polished Human theme in a structured way. It's about getting a process in place which allows everyone to participate in an efficient and organized way, and it's going well already. Besides the Human theme, there's room for other themes like Tropic to be developed and considered for inclusion in Edgy and that is were theme teams come in. I'm going to send a detailed explanation to the list within a few minutes, alongside the request for teams to apply, so stay tuned! At this point I think it is a good opportunity to consider creating theme teams for themes besides the default one. I will officially start off this discussion later today. With kind regards, Frank It's not actually that far off from Human, Tropic was designed to have an easier transition than Frozen because the main colors are Orange and Green, meaning we could keep our logo the same, and as long as we tweaked some of the icons in the theme (like monitors) to look a bit better, and added some green to the website in some places, it would be as easy as pie! That's a good idea, and in a way we're doing this on a different level already by determining textures and colors before producing any artwork. By the time we enter the Production phase we'll have some solid guidelines on what color hues and textures to use when creating artwork. One area in which we need more thorough guidelines is when producing or polishing icons for the Human icon set. Their style seems to adhere to some guidelines which have not been documented publicly so we need to spend some time trying to reverse engineer what base palette, shadow techniques and materials were used in those. If there is some public documentation on that icon set, I'd gladly hear about it because it will save a lot of time. Hello, There is a link for you on right top corner of each page. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpContents and especially https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpForBeginners Good luck, and welcome to the art team. Read carefully the Artwork page before adding content to the Artwork namespace. If you send something good to the mailing list I will Wiki it myself and add it to the relevant pages, but doing that yourself is fine with me, as long as it's neatly tucked under /Artwork/Incoming. > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/FyreTextures > These textures are made with fyre and gimp (to provide a browner backgroun) > > As we are in early stages I haven't spent ages on them (for example > getting the colours just right), but they are very striking, and I > think could work great on a splash, usplash, login screen and > wallpaper Great, thanks for your entry, this is what we're aiming for in the Ponder phase. Troy showed me Fyre during the UDS in Paris and it produces a unique style of artwork. I'm not sure yet if it produces the kind of artwork we'd want in the Human style by default because it is kind of abstract, mathematical and "clean", but it could sure be a good base for a theme. I added the Fyre textures to the Ponder submissions on the Wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan/Ponder Sincerely, Frank -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
[ubuntu-art] putting art on the wiki
hi, i want to put some work up on the wiki, but i'm not sure how to do it. i've never actually worked with a wiki before. i've set myself up with a launchpad account, i can download the page template and work on it with a html editor, but how do i add the finished page and artwork onto the wiki? i've tried searching the wiki for a howto on added pages, but i'm not having much luck. john m. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art
