Hello,
I am Leo (zeus-x). I am curious as to where I can obtain images such as
basic black and white Ubuntu images, logos, etc, so I can manipulate
them. Are there such images? Please let me know when you have a chance.
I would really appreciate it. I have been artistic for my entire life
and would like to transfer that to my PC life. I do have a launchpad
account, am trying to become an advocate and would like to be more
involved with Ubuntu. I like the community and the ethic but need some
help in getting started. Thank you.

Overall I really like the new design, good work!
My only complaint would be, that the sounds are a bit long.
If you have a rather fast machine, the logout sound will still play even
if gdm already shows up again (this also produces a mix of the the gdm
drum roll sound and the log out sound, which is a bit odd).

I don't think that it is unreasonable for an OS to ship with a particular

As I am the co-author of the bootsplash, I will agree :p

The reason for using the usplash is that it works on almost all computers
whereas the bootsplash will revert to the console when anything fails, which
happens a lot on newer computers (intel chips are a real problem).

I am pretty uncertain as to whether the usplash can/will be made to do more
colors for edgy, so I would not hold my breath on that.

The test screen isn't intended to look "in place", but to actually test
various behaviours of monitors and video cards. Each of the elements
has an actual purpose, and even the palette is chosen deliberately

[ubuntu-art] Starting the Theme Team application process

2006-10-01 Thread Frank Schoep
Hello fellow artists,

The time has come to properly announce the start of the theme team application
process. It's an entirely new phenomenon so I will take the time to describe
what it is and why you should take notice.

At the moment we're working full force on getting ideas in for the upcoming
Human look in Edgy. This is going well, but there's a lot of good theme ideas
which do not readily fit in the guidelines we've already set out for Edgy's
Human look.

Theme ideas that come to mind are Tropic, recently proposed by Viper550, and
Outdoors which was included in Dapper. These extra themes all have a distinct
direction and look to them and it would be great if we can offer them to the
end user in Edgy. Note that these themes are created and developed for use in
Ubuntu, I'm not talking about "external" themes.

To make the process of adding such co-developed themes as smooth as possible
we need to establish a solid communication between the theme developers and
the official Ubuntu side of things.

This basically means that the theme developers can find a helping hand in me
and Kenneth to get their themes polished, packaged and included in Edgy;
we'll be here to help and assist you.

The first step in getting towards that goal is identifying the interest for
developing themes. I want to create a list with Ubuntu themes, including a
lead development contact and what artwork parts of the operating system the
theme will provide. Each theme will have its own "theme team" that way.

What I want to ask you now is to drop in on this discussion, either privately
or via the list, if you want to develop and maintain a theme for Edgy and
want to use the assistance we can offer. Please take the time to supply the
following information:

- your full name (you will be listed as the main contact for the theme)
- your e-mail address
- the name of the theme, alongside a short description
- a list of which artwork part(s) the theme will provide:
- GDM theme
- login splash
- desktop wallpaper
- GTK theme
- window borders
- icon set

Applications are accepted up until the 13th of July, 2006. I've added this
date to the Edgy artwork plan Wiki page, alongside the final deadline for
theme team's work, which is now set at the 24th of August, 2006:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Specs/EdgyArtworkPlan

One last thing I wanted to say is that a theme team has a lot of freedom to
approach their artwork the way they see fit. The mailing list, Kenneth and I
can provide assistance and guidance when desired, but in the end it's the
team's theme.

Once your applications are in, I will discuss the details like communication,
licensing and Art Council matters with the lead developers of each theme.

I'm looking forward to your applications and feedback.

With kind regards,

Frank Schoep

The principal capabilities of the new usplash are just in theming; the
theme .so file exports a structure which allows things like progress bar
locations, text box locations, colours, etc. to be set. The theme also
allows changing of font.

I suspect the final edgy usplash theme will include the drawing commands
for the "throbber" and "progress bar", so that those can be drawn with
custom detail if desired.

[ubuntu-art] A list of GUI improvements

2006-10-01 Thread Saad Shakhshir
Some of the apps that come installed by default in Dapper don't have a very consistent look 'n feel with the rest of the Human theme.  I came across this site that has a list of very nice improvements to the Ubuntu GUI for several of those apps... might be worth considering using his stuff for Edgy...

[ubuntu-art] A small suggestion

2006-10-01 Thread Cyphase
Hey everyone,

This is my first email to the art list, although I've been subscribed
for a while..

I was thinking that in Edgy, there should be icons for different types
of directories, e.g. a Music directory icon, a Photos directory icon,
etc. Also, maybe the ~/Desktop directory should have the "Desktop"
emblem as it's icon instead of as an emblem, like it is in the Places
menu. Just a random idea I thought I'd throw out there.

You guys did great with Dapper. I can't wait to see what new style you
cook up for Edgy.

[ubuntu-art] Wrong metacity

2006-10-01 Thread Andrea
Hi I'm Andrea Cimitan (aka Cimi). Yesterday I've installed ubuntu on my
father's PC and I've seen that a theme of mine (Gray) was added (i don't
know when) to the ufficial ubuntu-artwork package. I was happy for this. :)
The only thing that surprise me is that it was added togheter with the
metacity theme Candiso-selected, that was renamed to Gray.
I just want to know the reasons of this choice because (personally) I
dislike Gray and Candido-Selected combination (gtk2+metacity).
There's an opportunity to remove Candido-selected and ad default
metacity theme? Or add Candido gtk2 theme togheter with candido-selected?

I repeat, only if it is possible, and remember that I'm so happy of seen
my theme in such an important distro!

Bye,
Cimi

The art work is not for our pleasure its for the users of Ubuntu so NOT
asking them what they want us to do for Edgy is crazy. I think coming up
with some colour proposals that the art team like and (to some degree)
agree on, then present these to the users on the forums with a poll to
see what is popular.

We could also poll people on their favourite art in Dapper to get a feel
of what worked.

No, but I don't think we want to drop all the GNOME themes, some of them
are nice and it would not be nice to upstream

IMHO drop the metathemes only, that way upgrades would probably still work
and all the themes would still be available, only a little more hidden.

Hi,

If you want to drop some themes don't forget the upgrade path, some
people are probably using those so they should stay available on upgrade

[ubuntu-art] Simple folder icon bug

2006-10-01 Thread Albert Santoni
Hi guys,

I just wanted to make sure someone who can fix this sees this, since
it's really simple to fix:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/46668

Basically, if you set the zoom level in Nautilus to 75%, the icons go
huge...

Can anyone fix this before Dapper comes out?

Thanks!

Oh great, why didn't you use SVG? There is no open-source version of
Xara for Windows, and I usually do all my graphics design on Windows!
Whoops...

I'm sorry for the confusion guys, let me clear this up.

Étienne, I can certainly understand your point of view where the
Polish phase means trying to improve Troy's current design. However,
because Mark doesn't approve the current artwork we need to work on a
very different design given a new set of directions. So the "Polish"
phase is actually a short version of the whole process we went through
already.

This means that Viper550 is doing the right thing in trying to come up
with new designs conforming to Mark's directions. Because of the name
"Polish" it's easy to get confused about the meaning right now, so I
hope this clears it up.

The second thing about the Xara format: I think it's not a bad thing
that Troy used Xara for his design. There are some tricks in there
which are not easily created in Inkscape so it makes sense to use
Xara. With Xara being open source and the file format being properly
documented the future for that format looks bright.

I can understand the problem of availability on Windows, so it's
obvious we should prefer Inkscape. However, there are a lot of people
on the team using Linux who are able to use Xara open-source. Maybe
you could try the free VMWare Player to install Ubuntu in a virtual
machine on your Windows installation to enjoy the best of both worlds?

Your questions and comments are welcome, I'll be here to take away any
confusion regarding our current directions.

With kind regards,

Frank Schoep
I'm just concerned because my Linux machine (FC5) isn't as powerful as
my main computer. My main has Windows XP, 512 MB ram, and a Athlon XP
processor. But my older computer has 256 MB ram, Windows XP and Fedora
Core 5, and the Athlon Thunderbird (pretty much the Athlon version of a
Pentium III). Also, it's just that for some reason, they don't have a
version of the open-source version for Windows XP (you pretty much have
to buy it if you want it for Windows right now)

Also, I agree with what Frank just said. I was following almost EXACTLY
with the guidelines you gave (modeling it after the Dapper Gnome Splash).

p.s. I've attached the SVG source if anyone wants it. I've also added a
new subpage to the Polish section with my wallpaper on it!

The icon you attached is tango help-browser icon so it should not be
