[ubuntu-art] Ubuntu ISO Testing Team Artwork

Hi Troy. Hi everybody.

As I've told on IRC, we at the ISO Testing Team are looking for branding
for the team (i.e. an image, a logo, and an icon, which can be the same
or not).

We thought in CD's, flames (because we burn CDs to test theme), glasses
(because we check the CDs carefully looking for bugs and problems)...
but we're open to your suggestions, since you're the artists!

The Launchpad page for the team is
https://launchpad.net/~isotesting

And the new images should be (Launchpad requirements):

- -Mugshot: A large image of exactly 192x192 pixels, that will be
displayed on the team page in Launchpad. It should be no bigger than
100kb in size.

- -Logo: An image of exactly 64x64 pixels that will be displayed in the
heading of all pages related to the team. Traditionally this is a logo,
a small picture or a personal mascot. It should be no bigger than 50kb
in size.

- -Icon: A small image of exactly 14x14 pixels and at most 5kb in size,
that can be used to identify this team. The icon will be displayed
whenever the team name is listed - for example in listings of bugs or on
a person's membership table.

I think that's all! :)

Best regards
Emilio

The 'burning' suggestion in the K3b logo has always made me think of
destruction (!) rather than a creation process (that is, burning a CD
DVD etc), so I offer the thought that flames may not always give the
positive impression you want.

A testing situation puts me in mind of a question mark (?) and a
strongly moving probing activity - in your situation - brings to mind
an arrow or sharp point.

Combined these could become a question mark (or more than one) each
with a probing arrow at the end rather than a dot.

Guys look at the specs.

1) It is for Launchpad -- the audience doesn't really care about
internationalization in this case.

2) The mugshot is 192x192 -- get out your pencils.

3) The logo is also quite large -- 64 by 64...

I doubt anyone wants to see some stale Tango icon.

What about some sort of laser to signify the disc burning and a
magnifying glass for the inspection portion?

 Guys look at the specs.

 1) It is for Launchpad -- the audience doesn't really care about

I fail to understand this - perhaps not internationalization in the
narrow software sense, but the logo must still have meaning that can
cross cultures easier than a rather colloquial metaphor in English
(burn a cd)
 2) The mugshot is 192x192 -- get out your pencils.

 3) The logo is also quite large -- 64 by 64...

I don't think size negates the need to consider all the important
factors in a branding decision (no matter how small) before creating.
Instead, I would suggest that the size means that people will actually
be able to see the visual metaphors being used, and so smart decisions
can have a long-term payoff.
I doubt anyone wants to see some stale Tango icon.

I take offense to this remark, as it implies that by suggesting an idea
used by Tango (the simple specular reflection or lightburst), I was
recommending a stale Tango icon. Personal feelings about icon sets
aside, this kind of remark devalues small contributions by community
members and can lead to a Not-Invented-Here mentality (for instance, the
visual metaphor being chucked as stale Tango), not to mention
seriously discouraging contribution. I have been debating continuing my
read-only involvement in the Ubuntu Art team for a while, and comments
like this that entirely miss the point of my message (to point out a
potential design hole that may be considered) and make a blanket
generalization certainly don't encourage me to increase my level of
involvement.

I appreciate the work you do for Ubuntu and the Art Team, but please
consider that the long time lurker, rare-time poster may be easily
discouraged at the point of contribution with comments like these. A
hostile environment helps nobody.
 Sincerely,
 TJS

I do not think that Troy was being offensive in any way. In addition, I am not
sure whether a read-only involvement is involvement at all. In any other
community based effort this would be called lurking.

Not that your opinions are not needed and wanted but if you haven't given
either until now dancing around personal feelings (when as I stated the
opinion given was not unfriendly or exessively negative) is also unneccesary
in my opinion.

[ubuntu-art] Ubuntu-Art Identity @ 305

2007-04-25 Thread Troy James Sobotka
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Well we certainly aren't the '300' but we hit 305 members! That is a
_lot_ of interest in Ubuntu artwork and design related matters.

As a fun marker, and after having the ISO testing guys request some
work, how about we do a little ditty up for ourselves?

It's a free for all -- something humorous? Something serious? Whatever
hits your fancy.

If anyone is interested, ship the work off to me personally via email
and I'll put it up on the Launchpad site. I'll take a scanned sketch
all the way down to a fully finished SVG.

In the exceptionally rare circumstance that we receive more than one
submission, I'll shoot a poll up and we can decide which one we all want
for our identity.

Thanks go out to Etienne Bersace for his long standing identity branding
work.

Sincerely,
TJS

PS: The specifications for the Launchpad site are as follows:

1 SMALL ICON IMAGE:
A small image of exactly 14x14 pixels and at most 5kb in size, that
can be used to identify this team. The icon will be displayed whenever
the team name is listed - for example in listings of bugs or on a
person's membership table.

1 SMALL LOGO IMAGE:
An image of exactly 64x64 pixels that will be displayed in the heading
of all pages related to the team. Traditionally this is a logo, a small
picture or a personal mascot. It should be no bigger than 50kb in size.

1 MUGSHOT IMAGE:
A large image of exactly 192x192 pixels, that will be displayed on the
team page in Launchpad. It should be no bigger than 100kb in size.

Thanks for anyone who contributes.
