Hi!

I made this mockup today:
http://www.info.fundp.ac.be/~fde/ubuntu_intrepid.jpghttp://www.info.fundp.ac.be/%7Efde/ubuntu_intrepid.jpg

It is not complete, and I'm not sure if the icons are the best choice, but
this is pretty close to what I'd like Ubuntu to look like, especially the
taskbars.

And most of all, I would like the next Ubuntu to avoid using a UGLY GLASSY
EFFECT on everything. That looks already old! The water effect was cool 5 or
6 years ago, but now it is time to move on.

Cheers,

François

 Hi Anton!

Thank you for your interest. Unfortunately, my skills for theme
creation are really limited - in fact, I never created one, and I'm
only able to make pretty images like the one you have seen. However,
feel free to create and lead a new theme team if you feel like it. Of
course, I would be happy to help in anything you need - as long as it
 is not beyond my competence!

Hi François,

Unfortunately I have to admit that I don't have a slightest idea of how
to code a theme but I do know to code in C so I can learn it over time.
Is there a theme we will base New Wave or we will have to make a new
theme engine like clearlooks, murrine and aurora? I think the theme we
are trying to make is very close to clearlooks so we can make a fork and
implement our own theme style (the buttons shape color, the other
widgets).

I would like to ask the ppl from the list if they could help with the
decision on the engine problem (esp. Troy, and Who).

Like you François I prefer to do the drawing (mostly on paper :)) but
in the Linux world we don't have much of a choice, do we?

Thanks,
Anton

I don't like the black very much (why do we need to follow Windows in
everything? first the gloss, now the Vistaish black, even the gradient
is almost the same).

However, I LOVE the wallpaper, it gives the feeling of freedom to me and
that's what Linux is all about! :)
Do you have larger sizes around?

Maybe we can make more variations of it, with different landscapes and
colors that are installed by default.

I really like darker colors for the bars... I even made black ones for

the paper planes are awesome for the idea of freedom...
maybe we can use some kites too!

Fran?ois, that theme is really nice! The black and white monocoloured icons
work great on the top menu bar. My only suggestion would be to not make
Applications, Places and System fonts in bold.

I'm starting to think we can make a theme that pleases both people who like
dark and light themes by mixing the Ubuntu Orange colours with dark menu
bars which is both attractive and easy on the eye.

Great job, and for once it's not a mockup but a real theme.

[ubuntu-art] Original work.

2008-05-03 Thread Cory K.
Can we *please* see *some* original work for Intrepid? Not just pieces
from GNOME-Look or the wiki. It really take no creativity to piece a
couple of things together like some of the examples so far.

Let's really show people something new.

This is the goal of the Gre-Manity theme (now on the wiki). A new icon set
and a new color scheme could go a long way. More help is needed in icon
development. I like how many themes are being developed independently of
each other; let's keep working on this.

I think it may be worth discussing a theme which takes advantage of the
compositing effects available to us. With Metacity's compositing engine
coming along nicely, it could be worth considering a near future where
just about everyone has the fancy effects. I posted a while ago about my
current desktop theme with no window borders, which is very striking and
possible entirely thanks to the use of drop shadows to divide windows.
It saves space and looks great not by adding more, but by removing the
apparent need for more. The borders exist to divide windows, but with
the compositing effects doing that now, they are completely redundant!
(Not that I think it is sane in the slightest for the window manager to
handle drop shadows; that job should be left up to the individual
themes).

Besides the fancy effects stuff, I think the Metacity theme is a very
important detail which could do with a lot more attention than people
give it. One problem with the window themes is that they have no
consistency with the contents of a window, such that a black window (for
example) still has a big light grey border and an orange title bar.
Turns out the nicest way to fix that is to remove the offending
assumptive details altogether.

A good theme makes the applications look good and clear, not itself.
That's relatively easy with a GTK theme, since GTK generally /is/ the
visible part of an application, but it is not as easy with the Metacity
theme.

Okay, that's my nonsensical rambling for today...

Bye,
-Dylan

[ubuntu-art] Iconic Splash Screen- Intrepid Ibex

2008-05-03 Thread Pitr T.
The Hardy splash screen / icon was amazing, and I think something like it
needs to be done for Intrepid. There's a wiki on this now, at a subpage of
http://www.ubuntu.com/wiki/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid. If another splash can
be done well, it will definitely help the art projects to continue around a
more centralized theme.
