Re: [ubuntu-art] [Breathe] start-here ... Submission

2009-02-28 Thread Oliver Scholtz
I over-worked the start-here-Icon completely.
For checking it I submitted all here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/BreatheIconSet/Submissions

I think it's looking finally very well.
But if somebody think it needs here and there a retouch or
correction?!?? ... so he can feel free and put his hands over my
svg-file. ;)

One problem still I have ...
If I click on the SVG-Preview I get some black fields on the SVG-icon.
How to fix it? I can't find the error ... :(

I think the colors still need work. Otherwise the style is fine.

Though, I think I'd personally like to see something closer to:

@ SebastianPorta:

I don't know how your time is. I saw in your works that you have a good
feel for colours. So I ask you directly if want help me with the
colours? :) Maybe you have more knowledge about Inkscape and can fix the
error with the black fields, too. :) Can't find the error in this
file ... :(
But if you can't or don't wont ... let me know. So I will try it by
myself again for improve it all. :)

@ Cory K.:

The capture shows a Ubuntu-Logo in brown. I personally think that this
colour isn't right for many dark panels. It will have a dirty look.
But maybe I'm wrong, too?! Don't know ... :)
Only I know that many peoples dislike brown (forums).
So I hope Sebastian can help me with the colours and decide ... He knows
better what colours would fits better ... I think :)

I don't have much time lately. Plus, I'm working on some icons myself
(finishing the categories and some others).
About the black fields, try hiding the palette and instructions layers.

Al right. I will search the right colours by myself :)
About the black fields: I will look again where the error is ;)
 Thank you.

Here a modification of the source ... :)
Set the colours is easy, but find the right ones ... hmmm.

It's nice, too. But I am afraid you won't see it well on many Themes,
because they uses similar colours. :)

Oliver,

I REALLY like this, especially the color palette. Not too obtrusive,
but very much UBUNTU. This will integrate nicely into my themes and the
icon set. Nice work mate. :)

No no. All wrong. Sorry. That isn't at all like the example I posted.
I'll work up something myself later. I have to spend time with the
family for now.

Also, you know that in this and your other submissions you're using more
than 3 colors in the logo?

Really, I'd just start by grabbin' the official SVG, resizing it to
128px and try various effects over it. No different colors. Just use
whites and blacks. This is what I did for the current, non-logo
start-here image.

Yes.

 Just use whites and blacks.

Better not. Applying white and black on top of a solid color doesn't
give good results.

Just start from the given colors to create lighter and darker shades
from it and keep the original flat color version around for comparison.

SVG-file error fixed :) ... and the finish touch given!

@ Cory K.:

Yes. I took the original Logo, corrected the errors of sizes + positions
and took the original colours + set them brighter and darker for get
more harmony.

Of course, you can download the SVG-file from the Submissons-Page and
recolouring it for your gust. :)

! The Highlights need to be adjusted with the background-colour ;) !

If the colour-problem (-thema) is solved I will start with scaling ...

[ubuntu-art] Impression Alpha 5

2009-02-28 Thread John Baer
The Alpha 5 release of Impression is a milestone in the fact I am now
testing against Jaunty and not Intrepid. Murrine is up to svn143 and
other than the progress bar trough issue everything works well.

The alpha 5 changes are minor with my attention focused toward updating
the documentation and refining Metacity.

IMO Metacity is close. I updated the wiki pages with two designs. Both
designs use rings as the frame control.

I started with a solid default ring and then decided to add a dashed
ring. I am currently using the dash version and I must say it does
present well and there are not other similar themes I am aware of.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Jaunty/Impression/Metacity

I added a new page which attempts to document the Gtkrc file. I plan to
polish this content as time permits. Please report any errors.

[ubuntu-art] Alpha 5 GDM

2009-02-28 Thread John Baer
Jaunty Alpha 5 has a new and dramatically different GDM.

IMO the presentation is great with a large screen but a little cramp-y @
1024x768.

I really like the way Jaunty boots. It sounds like usplash will get some
attention in 9.10.

Isn't the purpose of the buttons to be at least loosely descriptive of what
the user can expect when they press them? I'm also not familiar with OS X,
so I have the same trouble with their red, yellow and green.

I'm not normally a fan of the Ubuntu should not try to be like OS X
argument, but I think in this case it's relevant. Why are you trying to
mimic what I'd consider to be a poor design choice?

I absolutely agree. Why are we keep creating icons which represent nothing?
If the buttons to close, maximize, and minimize windows are not clearly
marked, then that is a usability bug and a bad design decision. Apple does
it is a mark against them in this case, not something we should emulate.

I like the idea of an outline which turns colored upon mouse-over. Could you
create similar outlines which represent shapes associated with maximize,
minimize, and exit actions?
