Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu-art Site

2013-01-25 Thread Anton Kerezov
I just want to mention that by the time I added artwork to that
aforementioned page the theme was not official at all but just my vision of
a design attempt that would make Ubuntu more beautiful and visually
organised. I even don't know if it is still included in Ubuntu as Gnome 3.0
has arrived becuase my work now is done with complex BIM software that
could not run on linux.

P.S.
Keep on walking ;)

I'm not exactly sure who is taking charge, but I brought it up so I might as
well respond to your email.

Like our Facebook page: Ubuntu Artwork

This will reduce spam and unofficial talk on the mailing list. :)

Hi,

If somebody is going to be hosting it, then Id love to get involved…
As i said in a previous email, I am only 13, but I have experience in HTML,
Objective C, Drupal, Wordpress, and a tiny bit of Javascript.

I am currently busy with lots of schoolwork, but I am ready and eager to give
up most of my spare time to work on the site.

Whoever has decided to take charge of it, please contact me, and I'll be ready

I will make tommorow a site for us. It will be poor with design for start, but
ill prepare better template later. It will contain forum and cms. Forum would
be good for start, we will see if its enough. 01.02.2013 ill buy a domain for
us. ill pay for a year and if it will do the thing we will think about paying
together those 5$ or whathever itsgoing to be.

Ill post adress when its done

Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu-art Site

2013-01-25 Thread Сергій Гамоцький
Can we use ubuntu's existing infrastructure for this? This is ubuntu-art's
/official/ mailing list, right? Maybe hosting the site somewhere on
ubuntu.com would be possible?

I believe this list could become a bit more effective that way, I think. A
possibility to register, to upload artwork, to vote/comment, et similia? I
think the idea of making a website has potential. If it works - good, if
not nothing changes. Questioning the status quo can sometimes bring
interesting results :)

2013-01-25 Thread Anton Kerezov
Several years ago we used to store all the concepts here: https://wiki.
ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/NewWave
(this is the page of my old theme). What happened to that place?

I have nothing against creating many places for artwork as this would
encourage fair point of view and ratings. But the question I asked is Is
there really a need for such a place and can't you use already build
infrastructure to store your work? Maybe I'm too old and rational but
imhothis is just a unnecessary exercise, isn't it?

I also own a web server... if we could get a few donations, I'd be

I'm sure that with all the cool people on the mailing list, we could get

Things we need to think about if creating the site:

Firstly, is it going to be on a sub domain or will someone have to
buy the domain?

How are users going to submit artwork, email or registration?

And finally, what type of artwork is their going to be? Ubuntu
related only or something else?

Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu-art Site

2013-01-25 Thread TheVirtualDragon
Hey George, guess what? I'm 13 as well :D

Things we need to think about if creating the site:

Firstly, is it going to be on a sub domain or will someone have to buy the
domain?

How are users going to submit artwork, email or registration?

And finally, what type of artwork is their going to be? Ubuntu related only
or something else?

That looks pretty good! However, the problem isn't *just* the A. :-)

If you've run Software Updater yourself, you'll see that it uses the
standard Launcher progress bar when updates are installing.

So it's a bad idea for the Software Updater icon (or any Launcher
icon) to include a fake progress bar of its own. Otherwise one can get
confused for the other, and when there's actual progress you end up
with two progress bars visible at once.

It may be true that people are more used to arrows. I have nothing
against using arrows. But that doesn't mean it's the only "known
metaphor".

For example, most often when people install software updates anywhere,
they're doing it on Windows. Windows doesn't use arrows for its
updates icon.

If anyone ever implements updates in USC, it will be one way of
installing application updates. It will not be the only way to install
any updates.

Besides that, installing updates has nothing to do with shopping. So a
Software Updater icon that looked related to shopping would have a
non-sequitur problem like the current icon.

Your proposal is extremely well drawn (nice job!), but unfortunately
it has all three problems. It still has the "A", it still has the fake
progress bar, and it looks like shopping too. :-)

Thanks. Unfortunately that isn't really appropriate because it
prominently features the English word "update". This would not be
meaningful for people who did not know English.

It's best to use text in an icon only when that's essential for what
you're trying to convey, e.g. "Italics" or "word processor".

Cheers

Re: [ubuntu-art] ubuntu-art Site

2013-01-25 Thread George Streten
Hi,

I am new to this mailing list, but I am only 13, and love Ubuntu. I have been
working with html since i was 10, and have just completed a new personal
website. I am currently the youngest iPhone developer in the country, and would
love to get stuck right into Ubuntu art.

Graphics is my passion, and I love to combine it with my web design skills, so
I'd like to work on a site for Ubuntu art.

What does everybody think? I would love to start work on it as soon as
possible.

Many Thanks,
George Streten
