This is perhaps the singularly best reference on which to base an icon
theme we've yet seen on this list.

True, it presents a challenging new direction but one that will only serve to
truly set Ubuntu apart from other distributions.

Tron-Meet-Purple-Airbrush-Video-Rock-Explosion. Of course.. It was staring
at us in the face all along!

These are exactly the kinds of risks we need to take and the fact we are
bold enough to consider it is only testimony to the rich creativity on
this list.

Cheers,

Check out the gradient called "Sunrise" in the Gimp ;-P I knew I had seen
that gradient somewhere.

Actually this trapper keeper folder reminded me how popular that
white>light blue>blue>dark blue>black>brown>orange>yellow gradients were
back in early 90s or even later (see these "music notes"). Kinda
reflection of sky-earth on a glossy-metallic surface.

I guess glossy surfaces will always be "in", but the important thing is
where and how to use it. By saying "gloss is dead, long live matte!",
let's not turn the entire interface into stone or rubber. A balanced
gloss-matte is always needed.

And yes, this trapper keeper has that balanced taste, not for us, but
maybe gentoo artwork team may need it :)

Hi Who,

about the folder, it´s a plastic folder, that is represented in the icon as a
translucent plastic ;)

But, yes, I think that some icons could have more colors (like in real life),
and the border could be more thinner.

This is a very important point, and so many of the icon themes that
are suggested seem to miss it - consistency in an icon theme can come
easily from style, even without the colours all being the same.

Hi Dalton!
As it's currently not possible to download the actual icons, I haven't
tried these out in action. We have been putting a lot of work into
gnome-icon-theme, that this is based on though. As far as I can see, the
inner stroke on the black objects are a bit too light, but apart from
that they should work well.
Should probably make sure to add that Neo-phone to
gnome-icon-theme-extras [1] as soon as the set is released.

Re: [ubuntu-art] Icon theme suggestion

2007-11-28 Thread Daniel Moore
Although artistically very talented I found them a bit too much for
icons on a desktop. They draw too much attention, I also think the
unflinching use of a few colours (orange I am talking about you)
detracted a lot from the look of the icons.

You only want to find an icon when you need it, they don't all need
to scream at you all of the time.

I think a few subtle changes could make this set workable though,
thinner lines, more use of subdued, natural colours (colours that
would be found in the real world object that the icon represents).

As I said before, we should use the power of the colours to bring a
"easy-to-use/easy-to-recognize user experience". Folders, should have the
same colour, labels should use the same colour as folders but with a
different tone, devices should use the same colour too, to associate colours
and shapes to an app, actions, folders, devices... but I think that bringing
the distro icons just in 3 colours is not usable.
It's harder to find the functionality if every icons has only 3 colours.

I don't think that's a very good idea usability wise,
tough orange is still the dominant color in this theme. As
has been mentioned before on this list:

"I think my biggest complaint about the look of Ubuntu's
interface (the default GNOME, of course --- don't know
about KDE, and sorry to be blunt, but could not care any
less about KDE) is the "unicolor-ism" of the icons. Color
is an incredibly powerful and efficient mechanism to
convey information, and it is IMHO being sacrificed."

That is a shame, after openSUSE and Fedora, it would only
be one step away of having a unified free desktop style
for "The Big Three", without the need for a distro to lose
it's own feel. Maybe this et isn't it, but it is quite
possible to make some set with the Tango style guidelines
and making it look "Ubuntu" and integrate with the rest.

First of all: thanks for posting this here.
I think it's really nice but I have to agree that it doesn't fit well
with the rest that's going on for Hardy.
But I would really like to see it as an alternative icon set in Ubuntu.
I'm using it right now - only thing bugging me is the blue. Would be
great if you could make an all-orange one.

I'm not gonna debate this with you I'm simply telling you that the
current "word on the street" is that the Ubuntu-Hardy icons will not
"look" like Tango.

That is a matter of opinion.

Fact is that Tango icons are shipped by many applications
upstream, which gives us time to just fill in the Ubuntu
specific "gaps", and even more time to polish the Ubuntu
desktop.

"Naming spec" compliant yes, but looks, no. The Tango icons look dated
and cartoonish. Its nice for a consistent look but as far as modern
looking they don't make the cut.

I'll let Ken chime in on this.

What are you basing this on? I had actually come to believe that a Tango
compliant theme would be developed...

Wow. This freaks me out! (in a good way)

You may or may not be aware that I was pimping for a Tango-compliant icon
theme with a touch more realism than standard Tango. I believe you have
achieved just that.

Somehow the icons just appear a tad more crisp than standard Tango. This is
especially visible when I open the Applications menu. Great work.

Cheers,
Mikkel

I saw this set today. :) Though I think it's nice, I believe the Ubuntu
icons are going to head in another direction.

[ubuntu-art] Icon theme suggestion

2007-11-20 Thread H. Bons
Hello!

Lately I've been working on a Tango styled icon theme for
Ubuntu under the name "Discovery". I've posted it to my
blog [1] and gnome-look.org [2] and got a lot of positive
responses. It even got to the 5th highest rated icon theme
on gnome-look in 3 days! Some suggested posting the theme
here because Ubuntu is going for a makeover the next
release, so... here it is.

Please note that the theme is far from complete and still
open to a lot of changes.
