Wow, I really like thorsten's 2nd version of the brown jackalope. I
think this will be my wallpaper (on ibex) for quite a while. :D

Great work, Thorsten!
I really like the idea of the Jackalope sketch for the Alpha versions.

I really like yours, Thorsten. ("Jackalope Sketch (Inverse)"). The
sketch style is a good metaphor for this being a development release.
Then again, Oblivian516's 2nd one is pretty awesome, too... Can we
have both? :P

It would be nice to have this kind of early wallpaper for every in
development Ubuntu, to keep people on their toes. (And those
"screenshot tour" media outlets confused).

I think the less pronounced antlers are a good idea. I've never
envisioned a Jackalope of having really significant antlers, since
that would defeat its cuteness. The first mission of any rabbit,
bizarre cross-species hybrid or not, is to be cute. I guess that's
where the monocromatic ones are again the least likely to stir
controversy.

Re: [ubuntu-art] alpha wallpaper and icon needed

2008-12-30 Thread Smartboy
I've looked through all the submissions so far, and here are my opinions:
*Jackalope Sketch:* Great job, Thorston! This has the best perspective of
all six submissions. With a little editing to make the lines a little finer
(not as rough), and this would be my favorite.
*Oblivians Jaunty Wallpaper:* This one doesn't fit with what I consider the
Ubuntu branding as far as wallpapers go. Plus, I never really liked branding
on the wallpaper level. Seems too much like an advertisement at that point.
*Miffan:* The colors don't really say "Ubuntu" too me. The rabbit's legs
also look a little weird. When I think of a rabbit, I usually think of it as
fluffy, this looks a little scrawny.
*Miffan Edited:* Same problems as above.
*Miffan Mod:* In this one, the rabbit's colors look washed out. Colors fit
better though.
*Miffan R3:* This one is also very good. With no Ubuntu logo, perhaps move
the rabbit to the corner a little. Maybe some color adjustments as well
(looks a *lot* like Feisty's wallpaper, imo).

That is my opinion of each entry. [?]

In addition, there is an app that needs an icon :-) The hardware and software

testing app/suite needs a panel icon so that a user can intiate a test. At
this point there aren't any really good ideas for the metaphor (a computer
with a check on it was the latest and not so greatest idea) so feel free to
innovate and suggest something different :-) As it is shown in the panel and
the menu it needs to work well at small sizes.

this makes me think of a clipboard with a couple checkmarks. x]

I made an icon based on Alan's suggestions.
You can view it at http://www.piccdrop.com/images/1229960086.svg
I don't know if you want me to upload it somewhere.

I agree with this. People should know that the OS they are using is of
next generation. There may not be change the theme but the the wallpaper
is a must.

+1

I know that for myself I sometimes plod along with the development
version of Ubuntu not really knowing where we are with alpha/betas
because my system is always being updated. Perhaps some text on the
backdrop in the corner - in the same way you see the build number of a
Windows pre-release system, as well as having a nice funky image to
talk about / oggle at?

In my dayjob the icon in the SAP system for test is a micrometer
measuring something [0] - which actually looks more like a winzip
clamp icon to me.

Other suggestions from around the office include "gears/cogs" of some
kind - wihch I know in GNOME is already used for launchers on the
panel. Alternatively some kind of medical testing - taking the
metaphor too far - test tubes or flasks.

Cheers,
Al.

[ubuntu-art] alpha wallpaper and icon needed

Hi all,

Wouldn't it be nice to offer a wallpaper for the Jaunty alphas? People working
on a test system would immediately know it and it might spur interest as well
(or rants, etc). I don't want to put any restrictions on the design, the
point is just to get something different in. If it helps to test out any
ideas or work towards some goal that is an added bonus. All entries should go
