Re: [ubuntu-art] Meeting IRC log - Wallpaper
Hi everyone, I'm the one who's produced this wallpaper, and I have my own criticisms on it: - It's chaotic -- as an OS default, I was thinking it'd be nice to have something a little more subtle. - It's not well polished -- as Thomas has pointed out, the wood background would benefit from having a little less presence. - It's a little too dark -- As an OS default, I think something more vibrant is in order. - It's trendy -- It's not a 'timeless' piece, it's something that looks cool because it takes advantage of recent graphic art trends/cliches. IMHO, I'd rather see a default wallpaper that's clean and subtle -- perhaps even just a plain photograph, or something like dust/smoke as pointed out earlier. I'll try to see if I can give it more polish and be more worthy of the Ubuntu brand, and also try to see if I can provide higher-resolutions of this. What do you guys think would be ideal? 1680? 1920? :) -Rico S. I might agree with your other points, but not this one. We are talking about 6 months, not a place in the Museum of Modern Art ;) I'd say trendy is alright, as long as it's not just a me too design. Regarding size, just think of the common aspects: 4:3, 5:4, 16:9, 16:10 and look at with what resolutions displays and laptops have been sold with. Hard to find good statistics, it seems, but here's one, at least: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_display.asp -- Thorsten Wilms thorwil's design for free software: http://thorwil.wordpress.com/ -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

What's stopping you from working on it? ;) - It's a little too dark -- As an OS default, I think something more vibrant is in order. See above. - It's trendy -- It's not a 'timeless' piece, it's something that looks cool because it takes advantage of recent graphic art trends/cliches. That's the point of wallpapers being tied into a release theme/name. I don't see an issue with this. What do you guys think would be ideal? 1680? 1920? :) Do *not* care about default. (have you read the list lately? :)) Just make a killer Ibex wallpaper. :) For Studio, I require 2560x1600 (16x10) where I can. I'd like to see that. Maybe a 1600x1200 (4:3) as well. -Cory K. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

I usually go with Interfacelift's guidelines for wallpapers when creating mine, since their standards are higher than most. -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

What do you guys think would be ideal? 1680? 1920? :) Personally, I think 1600x1200 is ideal, since that's the resolution my LCD is built to. As far as dark / bright, it's something I think you should evaluate in the context of the desktop. Does it make file object text hard to read, or blend in with common icons? It's too bad most wallpapers are evaluated in the absence of those concerns. Justin -- ubuntu-art mailing list ubuntu-art@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-art

A thought I had is an abstract image where either dust :) or smoke swirls in a manner which resembles ibex horns. Something you might see the wind do on a dry summer day. If anyone agrees and has the time, give it a go! John -- I personally really really really love the one on the dust wiki page (found here: http://tinyurl.com/ibexwall) I've gotten nothing but compliments on it.
