Re: [ubuntu-art] Meeting IRC log - Wallpaper

2008-09-14 Thread Rico Sta. Cruz

Hi everyone,

I'm the one who's produced this wallpaper, and I have my own criticisms on
it:

 - It's chaotic -- as an OS default, I was thinking it'd be nice to have
something a little more subtle.
 - It's not well polished -- as Thomas has pointed out, the wood background
would benefit from having a little less presence.
 - It's a little too dark -- As an OS default, I think something more
vibrant is in order.
 - It's trendy -- It's not a 'timeless' piece, it's something that looks
cool because it takes advantage of recent graphic art trends/cliches.

IMHO, I'd rather see a default wallpaper that's clean and subtle -- perhaps
even just a plain photograph, or something like dust/smoke as pointed out
earlier.

I'll try to see if I can give it more polish and be more worthy of the
Ubuntu brand, and also try to see if I can provide higher-resolutions of
this. What do you guys think would be ideal? 1680? 1920? :)

Without the branding (not that I'm against branding. I just don't think
it works here) and a little less, presence, to the wooden background.

But I love the Ibex made up of what looks to be lots of bits of organic

Anyone who knows whether this wallpaper is available in larger formats?
 Like 1440x900?

I like it, the wooden background could have some less contrast, and the
logo could maybe have been incorporated in a better way, but I like the
sharpness, the wood, the abstract art of it...

I might agree with your other points, but not this one. We are talking
about 6 months, not a place in the Museum of Modern Art ;)

I'd say trendy is alright, as long as it's not just a me too design.

Regarding size, just think of the common aspects: 4:3, 5:4, 16:9, 16:10
and look at with what resolutions displays and laptops have been sold
with. Hard to find good statistics, it seems, but here's one, at least:

It doesn't have to be default. I wouldn't make it default either.

What's stopping you from working on it? ;)

See above.

That's the point of wallpapers being tied into a release theme/name. I
don't see an issue with this.

Do *not* care about default. (have you read the list lately? :)) Just
make a killer Ibex wallpaper. :)

For Studio, I require 2560x1600 (16x10) where I can. I'd like to see
that. Maybe a 1600x1200 (4:3) as well.

I would say you should go with 2560x1600 and 1920x1440 for the sizes. I
usually go with Interfacelift's guidelines for wallpapers when creating
mine, since their standards are higher than most.

Personally, I think 1600x1200 is ideal, since that's the resolution my
LCD is built to. As far as dark / bright, it's something I think you
should evaluate in the context of the desktop. Does it make file
object text hard to read, or blend in with common icons? It's too bad
most wallpapers are evaluated in the absence of those concerns.

I see from the IRC log folks are shopping for wallpaper ideas. A thought
I had is an abstract image where either dust :) or smoke swirls in a
manner which resembles ibex horns. Something you might see the wind do
on a dry summer day.

If anyone agrees and has the time, give it a go!

The author told me that this is the only size it is available in, and the only
format as well. Otherwise I might have put it in to test it as the default
wallpaper.
