Hi The List,
I hope you have had a Happy Mothers Day to those that are, the willbe's
and the wannabe's.

For those watching this thread:-

Thanks Owen. Tried that - sources.list is empty!

|Good point. Mike, you can enable this in software properties. You

Ya right there Paul! Especially ifn ya don't know how!

To Peter Garrett,
So many thanks for your clear, enumerated instructions that I was able
to follow precisely, then sit back and let the computer do its stuff in
its own good time. I now have Anjuta installed and working Fantastic!
(although minus 'Help' at this time)
I still have the reading to do - after a bit of a play with Anjuta!

This is why putting information in publicly available wikis is a good
thing, the reader gets the updates straight away. You could even run
your own wiki and put adsense ads on it if you wanted get something back

Emailing PDFs for documentation is so dated :)

Re: evolution, address book and calendar missing

2008-05-10 Thread andremangan
Sebastian, it looks like you used the first copy of the HowTo I sent to you.

That copy was flawed because Open Office had enabled by default a "feature"
that shifted any text to the left if followed by a space or a tab therefore
making double hyphens appear as a long single hyphen.

Hence, a second amended copy of the HowTo was sent out on the following day
to all those, including you, who had initially requested one, including a
brief explanation. In the second copy the hyphens are easily recognised.
.
The command to shut down evolution should read "evolution --force-shutdown.

The HowTo, as I sent it, works very well.

If you would like another copy just yell (18.6KB pdf).

For those who come across this "feature" in Writer and have no use for it,
you can turn it off by going into Tools, Autocorrect, Options tab and remove
the two ticks next to "replace dashes".

evolution, address book and calendar missing

2008-05-10 Thread Sebastian Spiess

hi all,

before I updated to hardy (clean install) I made a backup of my hole home drive
using sbackup.

now I want to get my settings back into evolution. I use evolution mainly as a
address book and a calendar.

by now I did the following
1 started evolution and went through the first setup assistant
2 shut-down evolution using evolution –force-shutdown
3 copy the following folders to the new home dir:
   1. ~/.evolution/
   2. ~/.gconf/apps/evolution/
   3. ~/.gnome2_private/Evolution

3 started evolution again, it looked like some things where there some not.

e.g. I had multiple address books and calendars but only the "Personal" ones are reinstated although I copied everything to
my new home.

I don't get it, why is it s simple with firefox and thunderbird and many
other apps but evolution not?

anyone help. I tried to import them but evolution would not accept the db file for importing. Do I have to update a file,
change a config line...?

thanks sebastian

Hi Dan

Interestingly enuf the whole thing resolved by removing the last part of the
second line in my etc/hoats file, e.g. it read 127.0.1.1
localhost.p3nn-desktop.network_name

I dropped the network_name at the end at all worked fine again

That sounds like a DNS client error on your machine.

Check to make sure that your /etc/resolv.conf is pointing to a DNS
server you can access, and that your /etc/apt/sources.list contains
locations you can access properly (trying pinging them, or bringing them
up in a web browser).

Hi Guys

I just did a distribution upgrade on one of my pc's from gutsy to hardy and
all seemed to be fine until I tried to start synaptic package manager. I
can't seem to get it going at all either from the menu or via terminal typing

gksu synaptic

if I type synaptic on its own it runs but I can't install anything. Is this
likely a messed up permissions problem?

You will find that your ISP would prefer that you use a US mirror than
Optus' mirror. Optus and Telstra charge very high fees for other ISPs
to access their networks. I can't find the thread on Whingepool, but I
remember reading a post from Simon Hackett at Internode some years ago.

Basically the costs go like this (cheapest to most expensive)
On ISP's own network
AU -> US
ISP -> PIPE/WAIX/Other Peered ISP networks
ISP -> Optus/Telstra networks

So if you ISP offers a mirror use it, if you need a backup, use one in
the US.

If you ISP doesn't use offer a local mirror, either change ISPs or use
the Optus mirror so they feel it in the bottom line :)

For the record, when at home all of my debs come unmetered from the
internode mirror.

Cheers

> continent :-)

Some general comments on APT mirrors, ISPs, and sources.list config from
a Debian veteran of 7 years, and an Ubuntu user for 2 years now:

au.archive.ubunut.com is hosted by Optus:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dig au.archive.ubuntu.com
*snip*
;; ANSWER SECTION:
au.archive.ubuntu.com. 600 IN CNAME mirror.optus.net.
mirror.optus.net. 86400 IN A 211.29.132.173

Now I don't intend this to be a "crap on Optus" session. Optus
generously host Ubuntu's au mirror as well as the primary au mirror for
sourceforge. But the fact of the matter is the mirrors are slow to
respond, and seem to be heavily QoS'ed. I completely understand why
they do this, but sadly it makes for random brokenness when doing upgrades.

In particular, the two weeks before, and up to a month after any Ubuntu
release see these mirrors get hammered. I honestly don't think the
world understands just how popular Ubuntu is right now. :)

My advice is to keep your mirrors pointed to your local ISP if possible.

For example, I'm with iiNet, and my /etc/apt/sources.list looks like (4
lines, each one long line - ignore the line break enforced by email):

deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu hardy main multiverse restricted
universe
deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu hardy-updates main multiverse
restricted universe
deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu hardy-backports main multiverse
restricted universe
deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu hardy-security main multiverse
restricted universe

So there's deb repos for hardy, hardy-updates, hardy-backports
(optional), and hardy-security for the main, multiverse, universe and
restricted sections.

Many ISPs provide mirrors. Internode are another I have regular
dealings with that provide full Ubuntu mirrors. If you are on any one
of the PIPE Networks ISPs, PIPE host their Pacific Mirror site, which
can be accessed free of charge (ie: not counting towards quota) for PIPE
users (iiNet, Internode, Westnet, AAPT, Swiftel, and many others):

deb http://mirror.pacific.net.au/linux/ubuntu hardy main universe
multiverse restricted

... and so on for the other repos.

If in doubt, ring your ISP and ask. It's within the best interests of
an ISP to host local mirrors of heavily used traffic. It saves them
money, and means they can deliver a high quality of service to their
customers. For you as a user, it means being able to perform mass
upgrades for convenience and/or security without eating into your
monthly download quota or getting dreaded "404 not found" errors.

Remember too that you can have multiple mirrors in your sources.list,
which will be tried in order. Put your own ISP at the top of the list,
and au.archive at the bottom of the list. If your ISP is slow to update
and is missing a package, APT will fall back to au.archive. There's no
rule saying you must only have one mirror in your list. The only
downside is that running an "apt-get update" (package refresh) can take
a while if you have a long sources.list, but it's a small price to pay
to ensure you get the packages you need during an normal package
upgrade, or during an entire distro upgrade.
