Re: australian team meeting?

2008-06-23 Thread Morgan Storey
There looks to be a Calendar already, I can't see who manages it, but it's
time is set to Adelaide gmt+9.5. Can we get events like this added at least
a week in advance, I am happy to be the maintainer as long as I am notified.

Maybe someone needs to publish a Calendar for these to keep people
updated... I am happy to publish in googles repo of calendars.
And date/time sounds good.

It may not be relevant, but i got a Telstra Bigpond wireless broadband
modem working with my laptop (running gutsy) on the weekend with
surprising ease.

All that was required was to load the appropriate module (once the
device was recognised and the device id obtained from lsusb):
modprobe usbserial vendor=0x16d8 product=0x6280
This made it possible to run a modem connection over /dev/ttyUSB1. With
Telstra, you can just call *99# as if it's old-fashioned dialup.

Paul

Re: Totally Out of Ideas on Fixing Network Bug

2008-06-23 Thread Null Ack
Ok so an update on this. Thanks alot for the help with this :)

So I took the advice and disabled ACPI in the BIOS. Wouldnt boot, but
then my research showed adding acpi=off into the grub boot line made
it get into init. The init is messy, with messages like fatal error
cant find battery (battery.ko) twice, and I no longer get times in my
var kernel log outputs. It may very well be issues I can ignore but it
just doesnt feel right.

So I joined the acpi kernel list and reported the issue. I just hope
Andrew Morton is wrong and I get a patch fixing this bug :)

Ive since learnt that Intel has a direct bug line for ACPI issues and
VIA doesnt. VIA is apparently known for ACPI dramas. It is somewhat
comforting to be able to deflect my emotions away from Linux and onto
that evil company called Via!!

I hope this is resolved because then atleast if a fix comes Ive done
something little that will prevent others with the same hardware
having problems into the future.

Perhaps you can suggest a fix for the issue then? There's not much point
complaining if you can't suggest a solution.

If more powerful hardware is required what sort of hardware is needed?
Im sure some of us have fairly decent equipment hanging around we dont
need and would be happy to donate it if required. It is the box that
runs our Local server and we should support it.

This week i purchased an E169 from 3 as part of a mobile broadband
package. Im yet to get it up and running but a lsusb shows the modem
straight away (lists as an E620) i just cant seem to convince Kubuntu to
use the thing. Unlike other i havent had the Mass storage device
showing so i guess i need to set up some sort of dialer. Im going to
look into it tonight but after testing on my XP partition its a real dog
to get running under XP with the device changing modes every 5 seconds
for a good minute or two before it can actually connect to the
internet. I dont think these devices were real well designed but at
least now they dont play up under Linux and go straight to modem mode.
Any hint on how to use the detected modem to connect to the net will be
appreciated for me and im sure others. Im gonna have a hack at it
myself anyway and ill post how hard or simple it was to get working for
others using the list.

Thanks

Assuming you uploaded your public key (as is the done thing) You need to
have a copy of your private key to keep using it.
