This sounds a lot like a bug that should be raised against the VLC
package in Ubuntu

Thanks for the suggestions.

There is one other application, added by default, under "exclude_class" in
"gconf-editor /apps/maximus" which is Totem media player - listed as "Totem".

I added "VLC" to "exclude_class" and it still starts up maximised with Maximus.

I ran:

$ xprop | grep WM_CLASS

and clicked the VLC window and it seems VLC is one of those apps that doesn't
set this property as the result was:

WM_CLASS(STRING) = "", ""

It's not such a big deal, at least I now know how to adjust the settings for
other apps.

Thanks again.

I tried compatibility mode last night cuz in enhanced mode I was having the
probs. Enhanced mode sets to S-ata by default. I find I'm having the same
probs both ways, i.e. it gets thru the formatting of the drive just fine. It
falls down with read errors when copying files to the HDD every time. Pretty
much every cd and distro I tried has done the same which is what had me
suspecting the pc as the culprit and the only thing different was the sata
drives re other systems I've installed

I've just dloaded 8.10 to see if that makes a dif as well

I really would try that ;-) That is probably the biggest problem with
backups - people find they can't restore. This could be for a variety
of reasons (media, setup ...). You should be able to restore to some
other area than the original. You will also have been through it before
when you come to the heart flutter situation of really needing to do it ;-)

Just to add another option into the mix. I've used Amanda
(http://www.amanda.org/) for years. It is trickier to set up and all
command line stuff. I use an external USB disk. Prior to that I used
tapes.

The backup does selected partitions from all machines on the network.
I've pulled out individual files from backup and unfortunately had to
recover an entire partition.

One nice thing is that the backup format is basically a tarball with
some info on the front. You can skip passed that initial info to have a
normal tarball. With some backup solutions (mainly priority) you end
up with some format where you need the original software.

 ...Peter

Me too has installed the simple backup on three machines.

Backing up was set up and then left for good, what I changed was the
backup location and the retention of old backups due to space issues on
the notebook.

I copy or burn the backup files to a DVD or a external HDD on a
irregular basis (bad I know, but better than nothing I guess).

I haven't used the restore function but I've used the tar-archive
created by simple backup to to a complete clean system reinstall. After
the install I unpacked the archive and moved stuff back where it
belonged.

I had one unfortunate event while using simple backup. I wanted to
upgrade a xubuntu machine and ran a complete backup b4 the upgrade. All
documents and settings where backed up but NOT audio and video files
(e.g. mp3) as well as files larger than 100mb. So I lost a few mp3 files
- but I only realised this after I repartitioned :-(

currently my backups are around 1.1 GB, I don't know how large the tar
files can get or if there is a split option.

Hope this helps,

sEb

That sounds like the problem. You definitely don't want compatibility mode.

I know that on a system with lower specs you can use the txt installer
from the alternate to have a successful installation while the live cd
installer would fail due to lack of resources.

The Bios seems to have a Compatibility mode and an Enhanced mode re the ide
ports which below that can be set to S-ata, P-ata, or S-ata + P-ata. Setting
to compatibility mode sets the 3rd by default which I'm trying now. I swore I
saw settings earlier re the DMA's and such but that may have been another pc
I worked on the other day

These are the instructions that I got from the developer when Eclipse
was doing the same thing (on its splash screen):

"Hmm, it seems it doesn't set the correct window_type hint hence maximus
doens't know that it's a splashscreen.

Can you please run

$ xprop | grep WM_CLASS

in a terminal, click on the splashscreen and then paste the output here
please.

It is a bit tricky to do this due to the distinct lack of space on the
screen, so I normally:

- Set the terminal window to be "Above all windows"
- Run the command in the terminal
- Alt+F2 and type in prgram name
- click on the splashscreen

Thanks.
"

Just do the same, but for VLC I guess.

Try adding just "VLC". Maximus does sub-string matching so that should be
enough.
Are there any other items in the list for exclude_class?

Actually - just realised that maximus my be checking the 'WM_CLASS' setting.
You can find that by running "xprop | grep WM_CLASS" but not all applications
