Hi Bret,

If you're keen to be involved I'd reach out and see how strict the
eligibility it, it may be a guide rather than a strict requirement.

Hi Geoffrey,

If it's similar/the same as the one I've found online [1] I am almost
certain it should just be plug and play, that is you need to have the modem
powered on and working and plug in a network cable to both the modem and
your computer. As long as you have kept all your Ubuntu network settings
default it should pick it up. However, how you set up the new connection in
Ubuntu will be completely different as it's a different type of connection
that what you've previously used.

Have you used an ethernet (cable) network with that computer successfully
before? If so, I would check to make sure you haven't changed a bunch of
the default settings. If not, it will likely either be related to network
manager settings or related to the driver for your ethernet port.

If you're happy to wait and see if the USB adapters work

Good question David, there are many things anyone in the team can do. The
main reason LoCos exist is to promote Ubuntu within the LOcal COmunity
(hence the name - LoCo). Some ways of doing this that pop to mind are:
* working with local LUGs (or other clubs/groups) to promote, distribute
and educate members and the public about Ubuntu
* organising regular local catch ups (often referred to as "Ubuntu Hours")
* organising a release party
* arranging to get tables at events and conferences to share Ubuntu
* setting up an installation festival to help new users set up Ubuntu on
their device
* holding an event to get a group of Ubuntu contributors together locally
to do some bug squashing, documentation, localisation, etc.

Most of these types of events have been run in the past within the
Ubuntu-AU team so if you're not sure about them feel free to ask, someone
will no doubt pipe up. The LoCo has the resources to help publicise the
event but each event has generally been thought of, organised and run by an
individual or small group of volunteers in a particular area.

So if you're interested in doing one of these things start having a think
about it and let the team know and gauge interest, you might even find
someone else to pitch in and help out.

For those who would like further information or inspiration I'd recommend
reading the following links:

Re-verification

2015-10-20 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

I have been advised this week that we as a team are up for re-verification
shortly. However based upon my view I do not think we as a team would meet
the requirements [1] to be a verified LoCo. There was a lot of discussion
on the list last time this came up so wanted to put this out to the team
before accepting this fate.

Essentially while I see we have the solid background and resources our
actual activity has dropped significantly over the last several cycles.
While I believe there are significant numbers of Australians contributing
greatly to the Ubuntu project in various ways I don't believe there is much
advocacy work being carried out, which is what the LoCo is primarily used
for [2].

If we are to accept that we will not be a verified team there would be no
significant change to what we have done in the past. We will still have
this mailing list, we will still have a website [3], we will still have the
Launchpad team [4] and we will still have the IRC channel [5].

As described on the wiki page linked [1] the only benefit of being a
verified team is an auto allocation of CDs and the ability to more easily
obtain larger conference packs. While we have used these in the past I
haven't had a request for either over the last 2 cycles so cannot see this
greatly impacting on our team.

So if anyone would like to seek re-verification please let us all know, if
I don't hear anything in the next week I will assume the team is happy to
let verification slip.

As always, if anyone is interested in running some local events the team
and I are here to support you, just shoot the list an email.

Good evening Ali,

Unfortunately only IRC Council Members can authorise the cloak (not sure
why, I'm sure there is a reason) as per the wiki page [1]. Your best bet is
to just make your request in -irc as you have and lurk in there until
someone comes along. If you're still struggling emailing the IRC Council is
probably best, their contact information is on their Launchpad page [2].

As for the loco we currently have no one with the time to regularly spend

the same time. However we do have a number of people who have done so in
the past and can provide assist on the list if anyone is interested in
organising something. As always anyone is able to organise an event for the
LoCo, there are no special permissions required. The recommended method is
to communicate it to the mailing list and pop it up on the loco team portal
[1] so that others know it is going to happen. I'm always more than willing
to provide any input and assistance for any type of LoCo event that people
would like to run. We do have LoCo resources as well to support any events
that need it.

Let me know if I can assist further, happy to do what I can.

 Hello Jared (Ubuntu Aust.),

Pine Rivers Computer Club had a presentation night of Open Source systems
after much research over past months trying to ready Members for the
Windows XP support closure by Microsoft. MS has been a hard nut to crack
owing to the contentment of MS products that many Members had not thought
further in their minds that one day product support would alternatively
change one's thinking.

Club President Mike Dodds pointed out that Microsoft was not leaving 'us'
but changing their support basis of products to Tablet and more of Mobile
Phone development, plus their recent software development like Window 8, of
which some Club Members were experimenting with.

Mike demonstrated Ubuntu and Linux Mint 16. A Member mentioned how he was
happy to be using Linux Mint 15 along side his Windows Xp. Some Members
have expressed interest of obtaining Ubuntu and other Open Source programs
for evaluation. (Jared, your donated Ubuntu product is now finding more
acceptance as a result of Club Night.)

So, Jared and Matthew, we think we may have 'cracked the nut' in changing
Members perceptions about a wider range of IT products. In some way, you
both have played a part in this and for that I thank you. I certainly have
learnt much from our contact!

Our Workshop Sunday Apr.27 will feature demo of Ubuntu product and Linux
open Source systems as well as sorting out more Window problems that
Members seem to keep for such a Workshop day.

Please feel free to drop into our Club Night first Monday of month, and
Workshop Sunday (forth Sunday of month). We look forward to seeing you.

regards Geoff.

Meeting Team Verification

2013-09-24 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

Just a brief wrap of the meeting from Sunday, essentially we discussed the
awesome event Joel ran at UQ recently where he had 50+ students keen to
hear about Ubuntu and also linked up with some of the local LUG members who
helped out.

I also wanted to let people know that I went ahead and submitted what we
had for the team verification as per the discussion at the meeting. The
main feedback at the moment is that it's a little bare of photos so if
anyone has any team photos from the last 2 years if they can add them to
the team flickr group or the page itself that would be great.

I will do a proper write up of the verification when I have a little more
time, if anyone has any specific questions please feel free. The
application is purely the wiki page, nothing secret. I believe Joel is
going to do a little write up of his event so I look forward to reading it.

 Dear All,

As the subject says, this process will be the new process, aiming to
replace the current re approval process. It aims to be less formal,
more interactive and above all still keep people motivated to be
 involved in the Ubuntu community.

Every team shall be known as a LoCoteam, teams that were previously
known as an “Approved LoCoteam” shall be known as a “Verified
LoCoteam”. New teams shall be a LoCoteam, teams do not have to be
 verified.

The term Verified means that a Launchpad team has been created, the
team name conforms to the correct naming standard and the team contact
has signed the Code of Conduct.

2013-09-19 Thread Jared Norris
Just a quick heads up, I got an expiry notification today stating we had a
week left before our status expired. I have asked for a short extension due
to the change in process however I'm not sure it will be granted.

The process for verification is much simpler and easier than approval
however I have not had the time personally to set this up as yet. If anyone
would like to lead the efforts all we need is a bit of a wiki page with the
details below that would be greatly appreciated. Once a draft is created
please post to the list so we can all add in details as necessary. The
draft should not take more than half an hour or so for anyone with basic
wiki skills.

If however there is no one with the time or interest in doing this I will
take it as a sign that the team does not really want to pursue keeping it's
official approved/verified status.

It is worthwhile doing the health check, even if just to ensure we have
everything documented and up to date. It seems to be much easier now, and
much less time consuming compared to the old process, which is a step in
the right direction. Lets aim for the document to be open by 8 Sept, for
people to contribute to it from then on, until we need to submit it.

Fwd: Re-Energizing LoCo Teams

2013-08-30 Thread Jared Norris
.

This is not to suggest our existing and previous LoCo Councils has and
have not been doing great work; I am tremendously thankful for their
remarkable contributions. I just think we need to amp up our game, in
much of the same way we have been amping up the Ubuntu platform. Now
is our opportunity and we need to grasp it with both hands.

This is a tremendous opportunity for great leaders to have a real
world-changing impact on Ubuntu and Free Software in general.

If you are excited about the opportunity of re-energizing LoCo Teams,
bringing leadership, and challenging the norm, I strongly encourage
you to apply. Please share your ideas for leadership and change in
your application.

I am doggedly committed to helping to make our LoCo Teams successful
and I have some ideas around how we do this when the new council is
formed. I am looking forward to working with our new generation of
leaders to help our LoCo Teams to do incredible world-changing work
with an incredible world-changing platform.

Thanks,

Good afternoon,

Sorry to hear about the problems your friend is having. I personally am not
able to offer technical support either, I just don't have enough time to
make that work.

However I do have a suggestion that may involve no money to at least see if
it's going to work for her though. If you have a quick look at
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu it will
show a method to create a USB drive that your friend can boot off and try
it out. If you look at step 6 in that how to you will also see a slider bar
for how much information to store, my suggestion is to move that as far to
the right as it allows. This means if your friend uses this they can store
a little bit of data and it will be there when they reboot as well. That
way it sort of feels a bit more like a normal computer rather than a Live
USB.

If you're keen on having someone come out for money my only real suggestion
is to ask on the mailing list as I really don't know anyone in particular
that would be perfect for it but a lot that might be able to do what
you're looking for.

I hope that helps, sorry I couldn't' be more helpful.

Re: Ubuntu-AU - Team Meeting

2013-05-10 Thread Jared Norris
Good afternoon all,

Just to let everyone know I've added an agenda item to the meeting
regarding re-approval. It will be coming up in the Saucy cycle so we need
to start thinking about if we want to see re-approval or not. At our
current level of activity I'd suggest we are unlikely to obtain
re-approval. But I believe by mentioning it now if there are people who
want to drive some local activity they can turn this around before the
re-approval date.

Unfortunately I will be unable to make tomorrow nights meeting due to prior
commitments but wanted to start getting people to think about this. I am
more than willing to help people know what is needed to and help guide them
through if there are people willing to do so.

It's coming closer to to that time of the cycle again where we plan our
release parties in our LoCos. I've created the global event on the LTP -
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/2322/ and it would be great to see
all the many teams adding their events there like we have in the past.
I've set the date for a month after the event as we often get requests to
keep it open so teams who want to have a release party at a later stage can
still do so which is great :)

It would be great to hear what teams plan on doing or what has worked best
for them in the past, do you run an Ubuntu Quiz at your event, have pizzas,
give talks or demos have install fests going on, or just get together and
have some fun and chat with your fellow team members. Share what you do
with us!

Thanks folks

Greetings Ubuntu World,

There will be Jam!

We are planning our next Ubuntu Global Jam (for the S series release) to
occur on:

Friday September 13, 2013
Saturday September 14, 2013
Sunday September 15, 2013

Please mark your calendars and tell everyone you know to *start planning
now*. Please put a placeholder on your calendars and also at:

http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/2315/

(Friendly suggestion: Do not let other events or activities
interfere with that weekend! Jam instead :)

Please reach out to people in your communities and think about what
you'd like to do at an event: Packaging, testing, translations,
documentation, advertising/marketing, building community through social
events... everything is welcome! No jam is too small. No idea is too
wacky... and jam tastes great! ;)

Good documentation about how to create a successful Global Jam event is
here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam

A short video explaining the most basic steps is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITk8PGBkMXQ

With over 5 months of advance notice, we should be able to make this
Ubuntu Global Jam a really big and fun one! Can we set a record?

Thanks in advance for jamming.

Cheers,
Randall
Global Jam Buzz Guy.

PS: Now all we need is an adjective and an animal beginning with S
from our fearless leader. We wait...

There is currently a very basic shell of an operating system that
developers are working on building. For more details please see
http://www.ubuntu.com/devices/tablet and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch

Please note, it is currently not a replacement for a tablet or a phone,
just a platform intended for enthusiasts who want to contribute testing and
building the platform. There is no set time frame that I'm aware of for a
finished product. As the wiki site mentions though, it's currently being
actively developed by Canonical for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4 and for the
tablets Nexus 7 10. So if you were hoping to run Ubuntu Touch on your
device those would be the safest options for now. I personally would be
keen to purchase the Nexus 10 (nice piece of hardware - if only Google Play
ever had it in stock) to have a play, if that ever happens I'll definitely
shoot a report to the list. I'd also encourage anyone else to feel free to

It is: Open GIMP and import.
From 'Print Image Settings' open the print dimensions fully.
Tick the box 'Ignore Page Margins' (just to be sure)
The print is on a full page and perfect as one would expect from GIMP.

This takes a bit longer of course but is sure-fire.
Also it allows one to adjust the image. For example I recently printed a
PDF of text that was barely readable because it was in pale grey. I used
the 'Threshold' colour tool in GIMP to get a dark black text print.

At least it's found the problem you're having. For whatever reason either
the printer or your programs are set up with the wrong page margins by the
sounds of it. It might be a good idea to go through and check all your
printer settings (both in the program and via the system settings options).

There are pro's and con's for security in using a LiveCD over a real
install. The fact that no malicious code can write itself to your CD
(assuming you're not using a USB with persistence) means you will
be unaffected by any malware or virus that requires installation. The
downside is you're locked in to the version of the program that was
available at release time, which usually means they're a little out of date
and might mean their less secure.

It really depends what your use case is and what requirements that has. I'm

Subject: Second Call For Ubuntu Global Jam Events
To: loco-conta...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hi LoCo people around the world,

The Ubuntu Global Jam (RR edition) will occur March 1-3, 2013.

We have some teams that have registered already but we need *every* team
to register to make this the biggest and best Ubuntu Global Jam ever!
Please take a moment now and go to the registration page and add your event:

(Even if you haven't finalized all the details for your event, you can
still register it. And, when others in your community see an event on
calendar they might just step up to help out with the last-minute details.)

Ideas:

1) With the recent announcements about Ubuntu Phone and Ubuntu Tablet,
consider using this Jam as an opportunity to try them out. Bring your
hardware and show others, even (and especially) people who have never
seen Ubuntu on these form factors.

2) Consider doing some testing. Ubuntu always benefits from the extra
energy the community invests in making sure Ubuntu is as solid and
bug-free as possible.

3) Simply have fun! Jams don't have to be all work and no play. Some
teams just get together to build community and strengthen friendships. A
stronger local community makes Ubuntu better!

More ideas, tips, and tricks for hosting (or attending) a successful Jam
can be found here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam

Fwd: Global Jam is Coming. Please Plan Your Events

2013-02-06 Thread Jared Norris
Good afternoon all,

The reminder for the Ubuntu Global Jam popped up on the loco-contacts
mailing list yesterday so I thought I'd pass it on. The email below has all
the details and it would be good to see if we can get some involvement. In
the past we've successfully been able to run online events which are good,
lets see if we can get some in person events going as well this year. If
you're interested just speak up, no one person has to do all the work,
we're a team!

To: loco-conta...@lists.ubuntu.com

Hi LoCo people around the world,

It's official! The Ubuntu Global Jam (RR edition) will occur March 1-3,
2013,

We have just under a month to get our preparations made and to make this
UGJ the biggest and best ever.

Please put a placeholder on your calendars and at
http://loco.ubuntu.com, reach out to people in your communities, and
begin your planning activities. Packaging, testing, translations,
documentation, advertising/marketing, building community through social
events... everything is welcome! No jam is too small. No idea is too wacky.

More details will be coming soon both on this list, on Planet Ubuntu,
and beyond. In the meantime, please get ready for the UGJ weekend.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Randall

I have been using a DVI/USB KVM (Aten CS1784) for years with Ubuntu without
problems so the concept should be fine. The only thing I did find with mine
was that with some peripheral devices preferred being used in the shared
USB slot (at the front of my KVM box) as opposed to the actual
keyboard/mouse usb slots (at the rear of the KVM). While that in itself
doesn't help you, I did find that the main reason this happened was the the
KVM device itself wouldn't always pass through the correct information for
the peripherals to the computer systems. So the first thing I'd check is
that the KVM is actually passing through the correct EDID information about
the monitor to the Ubuntu system. There are plenty of guides out there to
check and edit the EDID if needed, I did a quick search for Ubuntu EDID
and got heaps of relevant results on the first page. For whatever reason
some drivers are really heavily dependant on using this data to set up the
screens correctly so that's probably where I'd start.

The other thing to check is the model of the KVM itself, someone else out
there on google may have already found a solution or work around. For these
sorts of situations I just google Ubuntu ModelNumberofDevice and see what
I can find.

Let us know how it goes.

Fwd: Community announcement list has been created

2012-11-22 Thread Jared Norris
Good morning all,

I came across a post on the loco-contacts mailing list that may interest
some of you. It would appear they've set up a new mailing list to announce
community topics that is open to anyone. The details are in the email below.

There are all kinds of announcements in the Ubuntu community that are not
strictly development or release-related which are posted here on the
fridge, from the recent revision of the Code of Conduct to upcoming
community-wide events.

At the Ubuntu Developer Summit in October the Community Council spoke with
other members of the community and decided to launch a new community
announcement list.

The list is now live! Sign up here:

Official 12.10 DVDs

2012-11-02 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

Great news, the 12.10 pressed DVDs from Canonical have arrived. They are
slightly less in numbers so I won't be able to send out the same quantities
as last time but I'm still definitely looking for making them as useful as
they can be. If anyone has any ideas on how to distribute some DVDs to the
public please either send me an email or preferably send one to the mailing
list for us all to hear.

As with previous releases, there is no requirement to pay for any of these
DVDs but donations to local postage from me to you gratefully accepted. The
only requirement of receiving the DVDs is that you are responsible
for making sure they get put to good use. I would prefer them not to sit
around gathering dust so please keep that in mind.

If you're involved in a LUG, library group, IT industry or other team of
people that are interested in having a couple of copies to share around the
group or make available to people you interact with that would be perfect,
I'd love to hear from you.

Let's here your ideas!

I should also mention I've applied for the usual loco pack of

The key to getting there was Jared Noriss's advice to obtain and install
the latest Sierra driver for Ubuntu. He provided the website. The
procedure I used to install the driver was given in my mailing dated 4
September. Hopefully this driver will be valid for future Ubuntu
versions at least for some time.
I had further problems (preventing connection) related to registering
 the modem. These were:
 1. To register one must install the software provided on the modem in a
Windows OS. Installation my old XP crashed halfway through the process
preventing me from using the Windows connection manager.
 2. The software was successfully installed on a Windows 7 laptop but
registration could not be completed because the modem oscillated between
search and ready to connect. This is not uncommon and it is thought that
the modem is trying more than one band (it has three).
 3. It is not possible to register using the previous user name (as I was
 doing).
All of these problems were resolved by the Telstra (technical)
consultant in the local Telstra shop. He carried out the registration on
his laptop and, importantly at my request, kept my previous user name
and so preserved my email address. The upside is that the new modem and
its link to Telstra is much faster than my old modem.

Fwd: Quantal- Ubuntu 12.10 Release party

2012-09-27 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

It's that time in the cycle again, that's right, Release Time! As
usual, if anyone is contemplating holding a release party now is the
time to speak up so we can help you prepare for it if necessary. I've
forwarded on the notice that was sent to the loco-contacts mailing
list for your information. The basics are:
* pick a time
* pick a place
* document it on the loco portal
* email the list
* attend and have fun with other local Ubuntu users

It's that simple. I think we should aim to see if we can get one in
all the major cities this release if we can, that would be awesome.

As always, sing out if you have any questions. I will not be directly
organising one myself this release to allow someone else to come along
and have a turn up here in Brisbane while I am furiously studying.
I'll do my best to come along as long as it's not on an assessment
day.

Thanks to Harry, Colin, Peter and Ian for your advice. I respond to each

Harry: I will follow up on the Huawei Wireless USB modem. For the

off the hook. I believe that it would be a simple task for them to laod
a PC with Ubuntu and test the modem, after which they could let Linux
users have instructions on using the modem with a Linux OS. Telstra have
told me that they have used Ubuntu but without clarification.

Colin: the lsusb command in Terminal lists the modem as 'ID 0f3d:68aa
Airprime, Incorporated'. So its presence is recognised.
the lsmod command has no match for 'UHCI' or anything similar. Vaguely
similar are 'usbhid Used by 0' and 'hid Used by 1 usbhid'.

Peter: I have consulted the lists you recommended but there is no direct
reference to the 360U modem. I am still looking up the links to see if
there are other clues. From the remarks in the lists it seems that the
Ubuntu network connection manager is being used correctly and should
show the assigned connection name in the menu (which it is not doing
 now).

Ian: I am using the APN: telstra.bigpond. I believe that it is the
correct plan name. However I would like to see the screen grab of your
settings so please email. Thank you.

Lastly to all: If I am able, with help, to get this modem working on
Ubuntu 12.04 I will certainly post the result on this Mailing List.

It's time to start planning for the Global Jam

2012-08-16 Thread Jared Norris
Good afternoon all,

It kind of snuck up on us again this time but the Ubuntu Global Jam is
going to happen on the 7 - 9 September. Taken from the page:

The Ubuntu Global Jam is an incredible opportunity for the Ubuntu
community to unite together around the weekend of 2nd - 4th March 2012
to work together to improve Ubuntu. Everyone is able to contribute to
the Jam, and everyone is welcome and encouraged to get involved.
Curious about how to make a real difference to Ubuntu? This is a great
chance to make that difference.

The global page is listed to get you all thinking
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/global/1901/detail/

And just to showcase the ideas that happened on the last jam feel free
to check out the March jam -

So if you've been meaning to do a workshop or class, now might be the

One of the objections we may come across from time regarding getting people

 http://openoffice.blogs.com/openoffice/2007/02/odt_plugin_for_.html

I also came across a reference from Microsoft that said that the odt
extension was available already in Office 2007 with service pack 2 applied.

A user that I helped with Ubuntu told me about this because a University
system they were using actually prompted them if they wanted to open an odt
document in word, and the conversion seemed to work perfectly.

Good news, because odt documents should now be accessible to those with up
to date Office 2007 and only a few clicks away for those with Office 2003.
I haven't seen anything about earlier Word/Office versions but we are

mentor new people in how to organise and run the events. They are
really simple to do, just sometimes all it takes is someone who's
been there to give you a bit of reassurance.

If anyone else has anything they'd like to discuss please feel free to

weekend, so I'll start some posters tonight.  We'd need to book the venue
this week to put on the posters and other advertising - do you have that in
 hand for Brisbane?

I guess the theme for the posters should be Ubuntu Open Day and highlight
the activities - installation help, discussions, information on Ubuntu and
open source software etc.  Please add ideas here ASAP - The posters can/will
be able to be changed for other venues.

If we do informational talks on the day they should be aimed at beginning
users and Windows users looking to change: What is open source and how does
it work, What applications are installed by default and how to use Software
Center, Backing up data and migrating data and applications, Ubuntu(Linux)
is not Windows, that sort of thing.

 Comments?  Ideas? Brickbats/Bouquets?

 Full steam ahead!

 Chris

Apologies, I appear to have dropped the ball on this one as it's been
a week without any action. I think it would appear the June 23/24
might be a bit ambitious given the current timing. Is anyone else
thinking of holding an event other than the Brisbanites? As far as a
date for the event, would it be better to line up with school holidays
again or something else?

In Brisbane I was thinking we should alternate north and south side
like the release parties. If we line up with the release parties then
we should organise this on the north side. Is there anyone on the
northside familiar with the Chermside library
(http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/facilities-recreation/libraries/opening-hours-locations/chermside-library/index.htm)
that would be willing to check it out and possibly book the meeting
room?

Now as far as promotion goes we could try to repurpose some of the
materials at spreadubutu -

easier.

Sounds like Ubuntu AU Open Day with some good supporting tag lines
in the advertising might be the best approach. So that's the name part
down, now for the next point:
 * Organise co-ordinators and volunteers for each location wanting to
 participate

So anyone wanting to volunteer to coordinate an event in their local
area? I'm more than willing to help out and mentor people if you're
not too confident to do it alone. It would be nice to have several
events coordinated throughout the country. They don't have to be in
major cities either, the event works well in regional and remote
areas, for evidence check out http://ubuntu.org.au/node/84

Sorry to reply to my own post but would we have enough time to
organise these events by the 23/24 June? I was just looking around and
noticed the Ubuntu User days are coming up then and it might tie in
nicely. Is that cutting it too fine?

Ok, everyone who has requested CDs should have them in a day or two, I
finally made it to the post office today. Please let me know if there
are any issues. There are plenty more up for grabs for those of you
thinking about it. The only requirement for me sending them out is
that you have to report back to the team on how you used them. A
website article, some photos or even a loco.ubuntu.com event would be
the suggested ways. Not too much to ask for free pressed CDs!

Feel free to ping me off list if you're not sure and want to ask more questions.

Mid-Cycle Events

2012-05-22 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

In January the Brisbane members got together for an InstallFest during
the middle of the cycle for the 11.10 release cycle. We discussed that
we would probably like to make this a regular occasion as an addition
to the release parties. We also decided that the name InstallFest was
a bit misleading and discouraged other users from attending. Therefore
I propose we change the name to Ubuntu-AU Workshop, Ubuntu-AU Open
Day or something similar and market it as something people can come
to for help installing, general problems or just curious. I would also
like to suggest that other locations join in on the action and create
their own local events.

So from what I can tell we need to do the following:
* Decide what to call it
* Organise co-ordinators and volunteers for each location wanting to participate
* Create loco.u.c events
* Organise a venue (we found public libraries had free meeting rooms
that were great, we also decided to pick them as close to free parking
and public transport as possible).
* Market the events
* Hold the events

Thoughts, comments or questions anyone?

I'd just like to add one little thing for those who've already
contacted me. In return for sending the CDs out I ask a small favour
in return. All I would like to see is that you provide some return to
the community as to what you have done with the CDs. If it's just to
hand out at work, school or uni take a photo of the poster you put up
with them to take with a little story about any anecdotes you have
from the interaction. I don't think this is too much to ask for the
good will of Canonical shipping them to us. We can use these on the
website to share the news with the world. If you're not comfortable
writing the article, shoot an email to the mailing list and we can
turn it into an article for you.

If you're planning a public event (uni open day, community hall
gathering, etc) and want more than a handful please make it into a
loco.u.c event so we can all join in, and who knows you might find
someone else in your area to help you out.

If you want to contribute to the shipping please feel free to use
paypal to send money to the email address that I've sent this from.

In my experience it depends on what you're used to. For most people
who prefer GUI based IRC, XChat is generally held in the highest
regard. For text based (console) then irssi is the general popular
choice. Both have their pros and cons. Personally I'm a big XChat fan.
That being said I've customised it over time to be what I want it to
be (fonts, sizes, options, backgrounds, colours, etc) so maybe if I
went to the default one I'd not like it much either. I also use IRC
quite a lot and have multiple servers with multiple windows open 24/7.

It would be interesting to hear what others are using though, I
haven't played around with other clients in years.

I wish to upgrade from 10.04LTS to 12.04LTS so I consult the Ubuntu
website for the simple instructions on how to do so. The paper-chase
 begins.
I follow the simple guide via the 'upgrade' link to find: 'Upgrade from
 Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04LTS
I go the the link 'read the upgrade notes' (for versions other than
11.10). There are many listed but none that refer to upgrading 10.04LTS
 to 12.04LTS.
The paper-chase seems to end here with no result.
I believe that upgrading should be done with care using the right
instructions depending on the system version being used so I am
reluctant to take a punt and mess things up.
Surely I don't need to upgrade from 10.04LTS to 10.10, then to 11.04 and
then to 11.10 before upgrading to 12.04LTS?
I would be grateful for advice from members.
PS My Update Manager does not advise that 12.04LTS is ready to load.
 Geoffrey

The official release notes [1] state that LTS upgrades are not
recommended until the first point release (due in a month or two). So
I'm thinking it will only show up as an upgrade then?

Is there any need to optimise an install on SD or USB?

2012-04-27 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

I'm going to be installing 12.04 on either an SD card or USB drive for
use with a laptop, it has an inbuilt card reader so the SD card sounds
pretty easy to carry around right about now. I have done a bunch of
research on seeing if I need to optimise the install in any way, for
example moving read/write intensive or swap partitions to the ram.
Unfortunately a lot of the data I'm finding is all in the 2007- 2009
range and the only recent data I can find is arguments over if it's
still required or not.

So has anyone had any experience or seen information that would help
deciding if and if so what optimisations are still needed to be
carried out?

Good morning all,

I just came across an email to the loco-contacts mailing list that I
thought I would like to share with you all. The Egyptian team have a
real focus on getting real world events going and have created a very
nicely laid out and easy to follow wiki application. I thought if
people were trying to think of events to run, how to run them or just
some general inspiration it might help to read over what they have
accomplished. I believe our team does online events (meetings, Ubuntu
User Days, Global Jams, etc) well but our next evolutionary step is to
carry this into real world events to include more than just release
parties (which are great, sign up some more!).

Maybe something that can be brought up in some of the release parties
that are planned?

Precise Pangolin Release Parties

2012-03-20 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening one and all,

With the finalisation of the Brisbane release party details we now
have 2 confirmed events for the Ubuntu-AU team.

For those of you in the Sydney area check out -
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-au/1505/detail/

Everyone in and around Brisbane should look up -
http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-au/1618/detail/

And the rest of you - start planning your own local one! It's not
hard, pick a date, time and location you would be willing to spend an
hour our two hanging out at a cafe, bar or other public place. Post up
the details on the loco.u.c site (if you're not sure how to do that,
just ask, there are many people on the list able to guide you through
signing up events) and send the mailing list an email with all the
details and a link.

There does not have to be hours of planning and it doesn't take days
to do the paperwork for the event, so get cracking!

events that weekend but obviously I missed that one. For the sake of
fairness I'll add in the dates/times for the following weekend as well
just in case that proves much more popular. What it means is though is
that the people who have already voted will need to edit their vote if
they would like to add preferences for any times on the following
weekend.

Thanks for bringing it up and we'll see what people want from here.

Re: Brisbane Release Party - Location?

2012-03-07 Thread Jared Norris
Ok, time to make decisions!

I've set up the obligatory doodle poll to determine the best time/day
for the Brisbane event at http://www.doodle.com/6z7sw9rbvvgu5rkr

Please, anyone and everyone that is thinking of attending should
register whatever their preferred times are so we can make sure we get
as many people along as possible (unfortunately we can never please
everyone).

Anyone else wanting to hold release parties in other locations should
probably also start thinking about finalising places, dates times so
there's enough time to publicise them. I've always found doodle polls
useful in this regard but feel free to use other methods if you'd
prefer.

Once times, places and dates are all formalised/agreed upon/decided
please make sure the events get put up on the loco.u.c page -

Brisbane Release Party - Location?

2012-02-18 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening,

At the meeting last week we decided it was about time to start
planning the release parties and the first point of business is the
booking of a date, time venue.

The main criteria for a successful venue are:
* Fairly central
* Accessible via public transport
* Able to site 10 - 20 people comfortably
* Accessible to minors

The venue suggested at the meeting was the Kedron Park Hotel (
http://www.kedronparkhotel.com.au/index.html ) as it's fairly
centrally located. There was a question of if this will be accessible
to minors or not so I posed the question to the venue and their
response was:

We allow minors in the restaurant area so long as they are
accompanied by a responsible adult ie a parent or guardian figure and
not an older partner or sibling. The minor isn’t allowed to enter any
area of the hotel that partakes in gaming, cannot approach the bar and
naturally cannot consume alcohol. So long as there is a reasonable
ratio of adult : minor there shouldn’t be an issue with licensing.

Please let us know if there is any more information you require at
this stage, or if you would like to make a booking.

So I guess the next question - is it accessible for public transport?
If you are thinking of attending and you usually use public transport
please provide some feedback on how difficult this location would be
to get to on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

My strong suggestion is that if you haven't already done so is to make

Then upgraded to 11.10 and I really don't like Unity at all.
I then switched to Kubuntu 11.10 and the interface while better than Unity,
is still not as good as Ubuntu 10.04

 What are my complaints ??

The philosophy that the computer should be a functional working tool - easy
to use,  fast in operation and requiring minimal resources.   These ideals
seem to be being abandoned and the 'graphic arty types'  are taking over.
Flashy interfaces ( which of course must be 'original' ) seem to be the go,
causing bloat, slows down operations and demands more RAM and CPU power.

For my part, I am not at all impressed by fancy interfaces - I want a
machine which is minimal in presentation, quick in operation, easy to use,
in other words totally utilitarian in design and presentation.

The ideal interface in my opinion is that used by Apple; lots of drop down
menus; icons which can be placed on the Desktop if required AND the tool bar
with the sliding magnifier - truly brilliant !!

Does any know of a simple window manager like that of Apple's which can be
used to replace Unity - especially the sliding magnifier tool bar

I would be quite happy to stay with 10.04 window manger but that will be
 phased out in the future.

Does anyone else out there feel this ?

Hope that this does not put too many noses out of joint.

I'm sorry you don't like Unity, it seems to be very much a polarising
topic. People either love it or hate it and it seems very evenly
split. I personally like the Unity interface on any machine that can
run it.

The thing I like most about Ubuntu and other open source software in
general is that there is a plethora of choice out there for you. As
far as more gnome 2 like interfaces I would personally suggest
Xubuntu or Lubuntu. Xubuntu is more a drop in gnome 2 look alike where
as Lubuntu is more aimed at a really cut down interface and
application set. For example if you have a P4 or older I'd highly
recommend giving Lubuntu a try.

I actually had a 1.6Ghz P4 Celeron M Laptop with 512MB ram as the main
server for the installfest on the weekend in Brisbane. It started out
as a Lubuntu laptop that I added the server packages to but anyone
that was there could see that despite running the server applications
on top of the desktop applications it was really snappy still.

So my suggestion is to have a play with some of the other mature
desktops and see what you like, let us know how it goes.

Brisbane InstallFest THIS SATURDAY

2012-01-04 Thread Jared Norris
Good evening all,

I'm sure you're all aware that this Saturday is the Brisbane
InstallFest, for those of you still not sure the details are online
[1]. For those of you familiar with the building the meeting room we
are using is on the ground floor with the entrance in between the
elevators. You do not need to be a library member to come along and
join in, the general public is more than welcome.

We still haven't had lots of people sign up on the wiki page [2] to
volunteer but just because you haven't signed up don't let that deter
you. Feel free to drop in for an hour or so here and there, you have
no idea how great it can be even if it's just to allow one of the
other volunteers to grab a bite of lunch.

I have pointed archive.ubuntu.com and security.ubuntu.com to the

the local lan IP address from other machines on the lan, not the
internet one so I know that's working ok). I have make a link from the

Where should I be linking the main folder on the USB drive to to make

Re: Brisbane Install Fest

2012-01-01 Thread Jared Norris
So on another note, we're starting to get most things covered for this
event. As far as I can see there are only a couple of requirements
still to be fulfilled and we're set.

I'm going to bring enough hardware for the actual network
infrastructure (switch, server, wireless access point) but I don't
have heaps of spare network cables. I have the ability to make some as
I have a box of cat6 but I thought instead of spending an evening
making up cables for a one off project that I'll never really have a
use for again is there anyone coming along willing to provide 20 or so
varying length network cables? They will be returned at the end of the
day and I can even organise to pick them up and drop them off if you
aren't able to attend the actual event.

If anyone has access to USB 3g modems that they don't mind some data
use on for the day that would also be useful. I have a telstra home
network gateway I can use but it doesn't have a high data cap and I
think if we start having a bunch of people use it it will get very
slow very quickly.

Light refreshments have been provided for by LibertySys (thanks Paul!)
but if someone wants to get a bit excited and make some specifically
Ubuntu themed cakes or biscuits go nuts.

The Canonical conference pack and table cloths and banners have
arrived so we'll be well adorned on the day combined with previous
posters make up for last year's LCA.

Anyone else have any thoughts about stuff we haven't thought of?

Ok so I'm so exciting I spent new year's eve configuring the laptop.
It's now a lamp server with dhcp and bind. I've told bind to steal
archive.ubuntu.com and point it at the laptop where I can mount the
USB drive and tah dah, it should work without having to tweak any new
installs anywhere.

In all the fiddling last night ( thought it would be good to resize
and move the partition I had on the USB drive but didn't count on
tripping over the usb cable and unplugging it mid move) I've somehow
blown apart the partitioning on the USB drive to the point I'm going
to format and redownload the repository. Should only take a day or two
fingers crossed.

So is there anything else I'm missing that might be useful on the day to set up?

I don't know about setting up a local repository, but I'll see if I can work
something out.  It might be as simple as enabling the local drive as a valid
source as you do for the install CD, but this doesn't get around the problem
of updating the package lists.  I'm not sure how that works.

Yeah it sounds like a good idea but I don't know how useful it will
actually be. Unfortunately it was someone else's idea, I just happened
to implement the download the whole Ubuntu repository and set up a
cron job to rsync every day part of it.

There's currently over 200Mb of update downloads required for a typical
Oneiric install.  I do have a procedure for easily putting these on the
target drive at install time so it gets around having to actually download
them. (It's a script that you can run alongside the installer)  This doesn't
get around the need to update the package lists either.  Even if we can't
update the user's computer at the time of install I recommend we put the
files on the target machine to improve the user experience when they get it
home, with the warning that it's going to take 15 minutes or so to install
all the updates which will have a performance hit.  Regardless, I recommend
installing without updating, or even with an internet connection present.
This speeds things up _immensely_ and the updates can be done later even
while the user is using the machine.

Sounds great!

I have a brand new 1.5Gb USB drive that can be used for backing up data if
necessary.  It's something I'm used to doing for PC customers for
re-installs, including the mail files for Outlook, Express etc.  Of course
we need to ask before backing up, but most people will not have a problem
 with this.

It's important to ask the question about data and backups before doing
anything to a user's computer: In my experience people can have things like
years of family photos on the hard drive that they've never bothered backing
up, or in some cases have little idea of how to do it.

Exactly. I have a spare stack of CDRs that I'd be willing to take
along for people to burn to and keep just in case.

If someone wants Ubuntu installed alongside Windows how are we going to
handle this?  I haven't done a lot of that, but my recollection is that it
can take some time to defrag partitions and move them around, though
defragging can speed up the move/resize quite a bit.  If time is an issue we
might have to be satisfied with a Wubi install, though that can benefit from
 defragging the Windows partition also.

I haven't done anything to do with Windows outside using it at the
work office in over 5 years so I'm a bit out of date and practice. I
was hoping there'd be someone along who knew more than I but worst
case scenario I was going to scour
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot for pertinent
information.

 Chris

Thanks for your input, I look forward to see you and others there in

That's why you do it with iptables (and possibly some dummy dns entries
using dnsmasq).  If you rsync the repos you don't have to worry about
building the indexes and you can update only the bits which have changed
 since the initial sync.
 _

We're trying to update new installs.  As far as I'm aware it's necessary to
get the software indexes (apt-get update) so that apt-get (or update manage)
can get only the required packages and their indexes.

Good point though, if the indexes are part of the repositories, and they've
been updated fully with rsync, then it might not be necessary to build the
index at all - the apt-get system may just be able to use the indexes as is,
at the point when they were last rsync'ed.  We will just have to give the
correct addresses to the various repositories.

The command I use to download and subsequently update the repository is:

rsync -vtlrh --stats --delete --exclude .~tmp~/
www.mirror.aarnet.edu.au::ubuntu /media/UbuntuAUReposito/Ubuntu/

Of course, I can rename the target directory at any stage if it will
make our lives easier. This all sits on a 1tb USB hdd.

 Jarad?  Please enlighten us.  ;-)
Did you get the indexes along with all those nice .deb packages?

No idea, I'm a simple end user who knows enough to get himself into
trouble and occasionally back out of it ;)

If you've got the repo drives plugged into a network somewhere just add them
to the software sources (and maybe turn off the normal main, universe,
restricted, and multiverse) and give them a spin.

I also have the medibuntu stuff if that's useful at all.

No, it looks like you can use local file.  Open up software sources ---
other software and hit the add button.  Paste the following into your the
URI field.  If I've got it right it should work and  populate the other
 required fields:

deb file:///media/UbuntuAURepository/Ubuntu oneiric main restricted universe
 multiverse

Should do it, assuming I've got the path right. Fingers
  crossed.

Hey, you could _always_ update your machines this way - you'd never have to
bother with on line vagaries or slow speeds if the servers are busy.
Even the new release ISOs will magically appear one day, assuming you've got
 the cron job running everyday.

I think you could replace main restricted universe multiverse with just
all and it may still work.

 Chris.

Ah bingo, works like a charm. I'll wait for some updates to hit the
repo to double check it actually does work but I've disabled
everything but the USB drive and it doesn't throw any errors so that's
a good start.

Would a symlink work? I don't have the hard drive space on my laptop

Brisbane Install Fest

2011-12-28 Thread Jared Norris
Good morning,

With the InstallFest just over 2 weeks away I thought I'd see if
anyone had any better ideas about the technical side of it all. I have
the ability to provide the following:
* 48 port 10/100 cisco switch
* home network gateway for internet (I'd probably only really suggest
using it to connect to the aarnet mirrors as the library wifi is only
for library members).
* power cables and power boards
* 2 desktop setups for people to come along and plug desktops in to
install if they like (I'll bring monitors, keyboard and mice)
* Install CDs and USBs
* 10 random length network patch cables

I also have an external USB hard drive that has a local copy of the
entire Ubuntu repository. The only problem is that I haven't had the
chance to get in and play with it so I don't have the technical
capability of setting it up on a lan as a local repository. Is there a
volunteer willing to own that pet project for the day?

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Good evening team,

Kavit has also extended an invitation to see if Canonical/Ubuntu would like
to present at the evening as well. So if you're involved with OpenStack or
JuJu in Ubuntu in enough detail to be able to provide insight into how the
development is progressing then please let myself or Kavit know. I know
there are a few Canonical types hanging around the mailing list but I have
no idea what areas of involvement everyone has so just trying to put the
feelers out.

Sounds like a good night, wish I were in Sydney for it.

Brisbane InstallFest Update

2011-12-05 Thread Jared Norris
Good morning all,

Just a quick update to let you know I've gone ahead and requested some
resources from Canonical for the InstallFest in January. We've been
given a Conference Pack A as well as being able to secure the Approved
LoCo Banner Tablecloth [0]. These resources will allow use to
include small gifts for everyone installing Ubuntu on the day. To this
end I've revised my poster [1] as well as including some feedback.
Unless anyone objects I think we need to move focus from creating
these posters to distributing them. Other members have added their own
banners to the page [2] so fee free to print out whichever one suits
your needs best and let's get promotiing. We don't want to be standing
around talking to ourselves on the day so we need to spread the
information as far and wide as possible.

Looking at the pack my logic would indicate we could probably give out
the pin badges to the first 20 people to install Ubuntu on the day and
then after that work through the lanyards. I have NO idea how many
people we'll have but I'm also proposing we raffle off the tshirts
hats included along the lines of first prize of a tshirt and hat,
second prize the tshirt, third prize the hat. Raffle entry would be
limited to either anyone installing Ubuntu or anyone signing up to the
team, I'm open to ideas here. These ideas aren't set in stone so I'm
open to other thoughts that might help promote the team and Ubuntu
better.

I have updated the wiki planning page [3] and I will be sending emails
out to the HUMBUG and Linux Australia mailing lists in the next day or
two. If you know you're going to be available on the day please add
yourself to the roster [4] and if you're bringing along some gear
please let us know [5] (add more columns if you need to).
