Re: LEADERSHIP and a ROADMAP
Im confused, but also fairly ignorant of the current structure. Hence I have a few questions about this debate. What are the primary functions of this group as it currently stands? What do other Ubuntu groups do that we dont? What do we want to do, that we currently cant do? That was my way of letting everyone know that to the outside world this group looks quite dysfunctional. Re: Where can I find an online anti-virus that doesn't install on your PC?
Without admin access to the PC you cant upgrade the antivirus. Chances are that half of those free virus checkers are themselves virus ridden anyway. Try using an ubuntu cd and booting it into the live operating system. This will run the ubuntu operating system from the cd instead of the hard drive and avoid the need to use the installed copy of Windows. You might not be able to save anything, but you might be able to get internet access and try out a few applications that Ubuntu has to offer. The problem is they are riddled with viruses and a firewall blocks me from updating them. The people in charge of maintaining the PCs won't fix them or give me the admin password (Win XP) to let me install a new or updated antivirus the centre is being shut down in a few months. If they were working, I could still do a lot with them, so I've been looking for a good online virus scan - but they all try to download a little .exe onto your PC first, and the settings on the PCs won't allow that. Re: Vmware on 64bit ubuntu
Thank you all for your suggestions. They have been helpful. It was great to know that this is possible, and I passed on your advice. My friend has initially decided to try out the free (beer) version of Vmware's ESXi server, because it looks easier to setup for a primarily windows user, and apparently has the functionality required. I did pass on your suggestions to try the open source equivalents, but he is familiar with VMware and not a big fan of the command line. Im not keen to push the issue, because I dont want to leave a bad taste for Ubuntu in the future if it dosent work out. I myself have tried VirtualBox and Xen with varying degrees of success. They were both ok to setup for a Linux guest but much harder to configure for a windows guest. Things have probably changed in the last 12 months though, and Ill give it another go when I get some new hardware. Thanks again, Mike On Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 11:27 PM, daniel sobey dns_ser...@yahoo.com wrote: --- On Mon, 16/3/09, mike james mike...@gmail.com wrote: From: mike james mike...@gmail.com Subject: Vmware on 64bit ubuntu To: ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com Received: Monday, 16 March, 2009, 10:23 AM Hi all, Can anyone tell me if its possible to run Vmware workstation on 64 bit Ubuntu using more than 4 gig of RAM? Sorry for the vagueness of the question, but Im doing some research for a friend who is currently a windows user but is considering 64 Ubuntu so that he can get better RAM usage to setup a virtual test environment. Mike --- Yes you can run a 64 bit os on a 64 bit vmware, you can run a 32 bit os on a 64 bit vmware, you can run 64 bit os on a 32 bit os. I believe quemu, virtualbox, kvm, xen can also do this. you can run a hugemem kernel to allow a 32 bit os to be able to use more than 4gb. If you are going to build a test environment vmware is a reasonable option but there is competition. xen is backed by most of the big linux companies and is open source. -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

Re: Firefox crash when accessing ANZ internet banking
I can login OK, but Im using Feisty and I havent updated anything, including firefox, in a fair while. I have noticed that I cant use Bpay view on the anz website. It gives the bad ol' incompatible browser excuse. Commonwealth works fine though. You could change banks. I heard thats meant to be easy these days ?? ;) mike David Whyte wrote: Hi All, I have found that when I try and access the internet banking site on either of my Gutsy machines it causes firefox to crash. The ANZ home page is fine, the internet banking login popup is fine, but when I enter my credentials and hit the login button, firefox locks up. Anyone here with ANZ and having the same problem? I am pretty sure this was working fine on my Gutsy laptop before the weekend! Cheers, Whytey -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au
