Router query
Hi all, am in the process of changing to satellite broadband (from years of dial up) with HarbourIT, and have been told by them that I can purchase wireless/wired router with 4 access ports for $180. This router comes pre-configured. I can buy a straight wired router for $90, (no wireless card in my main machine, and would like to plug in my laptop into same router) so I would like to know what is involved in configuring it myself. Am on a pension and would rather not spend the funds if I can get one for $90, and have the extra knowledge as a bonus :-) Are there any pitfalls I may encounter, am running 8.04 at the moment, but will upgrade when I have broadband access. Many thanks in advance. Take Care Winton -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

I can setup a dialup connection in my sleep, first time with broadband so a new learning curve. My query , I intend to connect 2 machines via a hard wired router, would I be correct that they are plug and play? and are there any I should stay away from, and are there any problems I may encounter?. Many thanks in advance. Take Care Winton Hello Winton, Since you are with Internode, why not use the routers that they recommend. They are a little more expensive than if you were to buy any of them from another source but they do come to you fully configured with your account details as well as a warranty. The warranty means that if you were to suffer damage to your router, all you have to do is to phone Internode and they will send you a replacement including a bag to return the damaged item. That seems pretty decent of them. Another advantage is that if you were to use their Nodephone service the router is VoIP capable. Connecting two machines is not a problem, there are four sockets and of course there is WiFi as well. Yes, they are plug and play. My experience with routers is limited but I can tell you that if you have a Siemens router you will be able to fry an egg on it. The Billion 7401 looks like it would do the job nicely. Extremely expensive. After my dial up experience getting dropped off 36 time between Jan 26 and March 26, (stopped logging disconnects after dialog with Telstra) would rather not any more to do with Telstra than I have to, besides with satellite I can dump my land line, which I would have to keep if I went Next G wireless. In my area I have to have a NextG mobile, normal mobiles have no coverage. May still buy router from Internode though, have been very happy with their service, sorry to be leaving them. Thanks again Take Care Winton -- ubuntu-au mailing list ubuntu-au@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-au

David Ryder wrote: Hi, I'm after a notebooks which I will only put Ubuntu (8+) on. I want the internet camera and mic built in (Ekiga, Skype). I went to JB Hi-Fi and Powerhouse yesterday. To my amazement, I was told that all notebooks will take linux perfectly (as in no problems) and one said he uses Ubuntu on 'several' without a problem - though he needed his brother-in-law to install it. Neither would accept my offer of I will buy it if you guarantee my money back if it does not work with Ubuntu (8.04). They would not as they then said They were made to work with Windows XP/Vista. My second question was, do any have dual monitor outputs? No. OK, it was a like-to-have, not a necessity. So, I ask the list, is it true that all notebooks will work with Ubuntu 8.04 (+?) including the camera, mic, Skype for Ubuntu, Ekiga, ethernet adapter to my router, Seagate FreeAgent 500 usb drive, wi-fi internet?? Apologies for asking but I was under the impression notebooks were not so simple? David Hi David, can't tell you what to get, can advise you to leave Lenovo alone. Optical Drive doesn't work with Ubuntu. With Vista installed, when hard drive is partitioned optical drive ceases to exist. Hope this helps. Can I use Debian DVD's to install on Ubuntu
Hi all, I have a 3 DVD set of Debian 4 Etch, and was wondering if I can use them to install applications like Scribus, Inkscape etc. on Ubuntu 7.04 ? I have friends who have Ubuntu running on machines with no Internet access, and thought if I could add the DVD's to their (mine too, have slow dial up) apt.sources list and use them as repositories. Would save them bringing their boxes here and installing via my slow dialup. Are there any problems that may rear their ugly heads. Many thanks in advance.
