2008-02-03 Thread Peter Williams
Dear Andre, Leslie and All,

cc: my Dad Mum

Thank you, Leslie for recommending the HP All-in-1 printer / scanner. Also,
thank you Andre for finding the best price to buy it.

I have forwarded this information to the person who manages my financial
affairs, eg The Public Trustee of Tasmania. Hopefully I will purchase one of
these HP All-in-1's in the near future. *SMILE*

Regards,
 PEW

Ok short a simple answer. I have a HP Photosmart C3180 all in one
Printer/Scanner/Copier. Cost me $79 a while back and works out of the
box. Very well too. must say was a major improvement on my old Cannon.
Not sure if the still sell them though as its almost a year old now. HP
seems to put a lot of effort into Linux printing drivers. Oh and the
  scanner works great too.
  Good Luck
  Leslie

The HP Photosmart C3180 model is still available. The best price I could
find for you, Peter, is $58.95 plus $18.00 delivery to your door making the
total cost $76.95. The item is currently not in stock so it would have to
 be ordered.

 Here is the address:

 Andre

I'm a bit confused by the above statement. What do you mean by the only
size for printer paper is Letter? Are you getting this message from a
program? If so, what program, and how do you get this message?

I was using OpenOffice.org 2.3's Writer program and when I select printer
properties the only paper size selectable is Letter. As I said, I need to
use the metric size of A4. I noticed today that when I select printer
properties in Firefox, I can select A4 size. I re-checked Writer and still I
can only choose Letter.

My attempts to print a page from Firefox result in the printer doing nothing
at all.

My main questions are: What are my options for using this printer to
print stuff? How can I test it? As I said, I recently installed
re-inked colour and black cartridges in it. Could this be the
problem?!? (printer has messages warning of low ink levels, but I'm
told this is normal for re-inked cartridges.)

It sounds like your main stumbling block is the problem you describe
 below ...

The printer LCD window says something about load paper then press the
menu key but when I press the menu key it fails to load the paper.

I think the message in the LCD window of the printer referred to the printer
trying to do some kind of alignment cleaning. I have not been able to get
that message again (printer asking me to load paper again).

This sounds like a hardware problem, not a Ubuntu problem as such. Is
the paper inserted into the printer correctly? It should be less than
100 sheets, firm against the right hand side. Are you using too many
sheets? IS the paper torn, wrinkled or folded? Does the printer LCD
display anything when you press the menu button?

I have tried both with about 20 or so sheets and also with a single sheet of
A4 paper. The paper is NOT torn, wrinkled or folded.

My suggestion is fiddle with the paper and printer until you get rid of
the Load paper message then get back to us. If it is a new printer you
can ring the Dell support line and they may help you get this initial
 problem sorted.

The load paper message is gone. This is not a new printer. Actually it is so
old that the model of printer has been superseded and Dell no longer sell
cartridges for it... that's why I had to use re-inked cartridges.

Note also that I tried to print a web page Firefox and I could not get any
response from the printer. It did not even try to load paper.

Cheers
 Mark

Here are two URLs pertaining to the Dell AIO 922 as well as the Lexmark

Check what appears in /etc/papersize . For example here:

$ cat /etc/papersize
a4

If your output from cat /etc/papersize in a terminal doesn't look like
that, edit it so that it does :) For example, by running

gksudo gedit /etc/papersize

Or the quick way:

echo a4 | sudo tee /etc/papersize

That last command will put the right content in the file, and print a4 in
your terminal at the same time for confirmation ...

See tee --help ( and/or man tee of course )

I did the command you suggested above ( $ cat /etc/papersize ) and the
reply was:

a4

Does that mean that I don't need to do any further commands???

I just checked OpenOffice 2.3 Writer program and when I select Printer
properties I only get to option of Letter paper size and no others to
choose from!

I would have to say that your printer might simply not be compatible with
Linux, assuming that Andre is right...

Does the printer work at all?

Could be time to get another printer. There are lots of printers that work
fine with Linux - see for example

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters

Most HP, Epson and Brother printers seem to be well supported, for example.

I had missed Andre's post but I went back and found it. This is the URL
Andre supplied:

http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Dell-Photo_AIO_Printer_922

And in it my printer is described as a paperweight. Eg it's useless as a
printer because the only drivers for it are M$ Windows based drivers ;-(

Thank you for the links (URLs).

*** What printers do ppl here recommend for use with Linux UBUNTU ???

I don't want to spend a lot of $$ on a printer, cos money is tight *SMILE*.

Can someone please recommend a printer which is well supported and won't
cost an arm and a leg. *SMILE*

Also, do All-in-one (printer / scanners) work with Linux UBUNTU ??? As I
miss having a working scanner.

Problems with a Dell AIO 922 Printer

2008-01-31 Thread pew_from_hobart
To Australian UBUNTU email list Ubuntu Linux Yahoo Group.

I am using my Dell Dimension 8200 computer system with a Dell AIO 922
(Printer / Scanner).

I did a total clean re-installation of UBUNTU 'Gutsy Gibbon' yesterday...
followed by me downloading all of the updates available -- I think there
were 185 updates, approx 282.5 MB in size.

I will happily provided specifications for my system when requested (as long
as I can work it out myself!).

I have installed re-inked colour and black cartridges in my Dell All-In-One
Printer however, I cannot print anything with it. When I use OpenOffice
2.3's Writer program and select print, I get an error message window Error
while printing with an OK button to close the window.

The printer is definitely being detected by UBUNTU because it auto-detected
the printer. The printer connects to my computer using a USB printer cable.

Also, the only size for printer paper is Letter whereas I need to use the
metric size A4. How do I install the metric paper sizes?!?

My main questions are: What are my options for using this printer to print
stuff? How can I test it? As I said, I recently installed re-inked colour
and black cartridges in it. Could this be the problem?!? (printer has
messages warning of low ink levels, but I'm told this is normal for re-inked
cartridges.)

The printer LCD window says something about load paper then press the menu
key but when I press the menu key it fails to load the paper.

I will appreciate any help I can get!!!
